Samsung has just announced the expansion of its 2023 TV line-up by adding a supersized 98-inch Samsung QLED Q80C 4K TV to the range.

A recent Kantar Worldpanel report shows that a larger screen size and the ability to access all key streaming apps are the two most prominent drivers for those intending to upgrade their Samsung TV in 2023. Supported by Samsung’s Quantum-dot technology and Tizen Operating System, the 98-inch QLED Q80C offers immersive premium picture quality and prominent streaming and gaming apps built-in, meeting this local demand for customised big screen entertainment experiences at home.

“We’ve worked hard to not only pack our premium AV technologies into a 98-inch form factor but to bring the best of Samsung’s entertainment ecosystem including Gaming Hub, Smart Hub, and Samsung TV Plus to the QLED Q80C TV as standard. Our aim is to deliver the type of no-compromise big screen home cinema experiences that consumers desire while continually working to make them more accessible to more to enjoy,” says Jeremy Senior, Vice-President, Consumer Electronics, Samsung Australia.

The new Samsung QLED Q80C 4K TV joins Samsung’s 98-inch Neo QLED QN90A TV in the marketplace as ultra-large displays that offer big immersive experiences enhanced by Samsung’s innovative picture optimisation technology and SuperSlim design credentials.

Pairing Direct Full Array and Quantum HDR+ technology with a Quantum Processor 4K, Samsung’s QLED Q80C uses a deep learning picture enhancement algorithm to upscale content to 4K resolution, providing incredible picture quality with minimal noise. Samsung’s LED zone technology adjusts brightness and black levels for bold contrast, depth and detail while Samsung’s Quantum Dot technology delivers more than 100% colour volume enabling accurate colour reproduction at any level of brightness.

At a mere 48.5mm top to bottom, the Q80C’s beautiful SuperSlim design provides a near-bezeless finish to deliver a rich edge-to-edge picture that defies limits and a TV profile that can blend comfortably into virtually any space. Despite its slim bezel, the QLED Q80C packs a powerful punch when it comes to audio, thanks to the inclusion of Dolby Atmos, Object Tracking Sound Lite, and Samsung’s latest generation of Q-Symphony.

With the QLED Q80C as the centrepiece of their smart home, consumers can get the most out of a connected home experience thanks to the built-in Smart Hub feature. Bringing Entertainment, Gaming, Ambient options, and SmartThings together into one place, the QLED Q80C can help users manage various connected devices and appliances across the home, adding a new layer of convenience to everyday routines.

Supporting 4K resolution at 120 frames per second via HDMI 2.1, the QLED Q80C provides ultra-high bandwidth for compatible gaming devices to help keep consumers ahead of their virtual-world competition. Ultra-wide Game View, which offers a flexible aspect ratio – from 16:9 to 32:9 – paired with Game Bar puts gamers in control by letting them check Variable Refresh Rates at speed, while Xbox Game Pass offers console-free cloud gaming.

With Samsung’s TV Plus service offering 91+ channels and thousands of on-demand, subscription-free shows, the 98-inch QLED Q80C enables consumers to feel as immersed in a movie as they are at a cinema directly from home.

The Samsung 98-inch QLED Q80C 4K Smart TV is available now from authorised resellers and Samsung’s Online Store.

Thin, sleek and all screen, Samsung’s new 65 inch QLED TV’s are a stunning vivid visual feast.

This year’s (2023) roll out of Samsung’s latest TVs evolve from last year’s models to offer a viewing and entertainment experience that your media deserves.

From the very large box, there’s some DIY required before you can zone out to your streaming or gaming marathons.

Adding the stand on will require the need of a screwdriver and some good old fashioned elbow grease.

This has improved a wee bit from last years model though.

There’s two main parts, the first screws into the back of the TV, then the weighted stand base (which counteracts and balances out the weight of the large screen) clips, connects on and again requires screwing in.

Of course if you’re looking at wall mounting, you don’t need to go through this.

At the back of the TV there’s a visible array of speakers and only two ports; The ‘One Connector’ box slot and a single USB-A port.

Samsung’s ‘One Connector’ box seems to have a bigger footprint than prior models, but you can opt to hide it inside a entertainment unit. This said, it will likely need to be accessible at all times if you like to swap out accessories often.

The ‘One Connector’ box has all of the ports that you will need; terrestrial TV slot, ethernet, x4 HMIs including ARC, x3 USB-A – one dedicated to an external hard drive and of course the ‘One Connector’ cable.

AC power goes directly in to the ‘One Connector’ box which then supplies power to the TV.

One thing to keep in mind is that the ‘One Connector’ box can get heat up. It didn’t get hot during my time with the Samsung QLED QN900C TV, but I’d advise to keep it in a well ventilated space.

The Samsung QLED QN900C OS setup is relatively easy and there’s two options.

If you have a Samsung smartphone it’s easier and more streamlined, if not, use the rechargeable bluetooth TV remote to go through the steps, join your home WiFi, add a profile, visual and audio preferences, login or create a Samsung account (if you choose to) and boom you’re good to go. The whole set up takes less than 5 minutes.

Of course the Samsung QLED QN900C is a smart TV and you’ll be able to integrate this in to your smarthome and any smart assistants such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

Last year Samsung offered an Xbox app on their QLED models, where you can add an app to the home screen and once logged in to your active Gamepass Xbox account, play games directly from the TV via a bluetooth paired Xbox controller.

All of the main streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime and YouTube are already pre-installed, with Samsung seemingly favouring Prime.

An additional app is also pre-installed called ‘Samsung TV Plus’.

This intuitive service collates a few free-to-stream networks and offers up suggestions based on your viewing history, which will adapt as you use the TV more.

Audio on the Samsung QLED QN900C TV is more than I expected from any tele. The QLED QN900C sounds near to having a home cinema audio set up and almost replaces the need of a soundbar, to the likes of Samsung’s Q990C.

There’s a few audio modes tailored to what you might be using the TV for, i.e. gaming or watching movies, but you can leave this to smart adapt.

Same can be said for the visuals. The QN900C is 8K, something that Samsung introduced in to their S Series smartphones a few years back and their smart TVs.

However, there’s still a shortage of native 8K media out there, and streaming at best is HD.

Gaming however is 4K and either PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X console play is absolutely stunning in native 4K.

Where possible the QN900C will try and upscale as well.

There’s a lot of to love about the Samsung QLED TVs. Picture perfect. No screen bezel. Antiglare. And a visual experience second to none.

But they do come at a price which makes the purchase of the QN900C a serious investment.

If you’ve got the cash and looking for the ultimate in both an audio and visual experience (especially for 4K gaming) the 65 inch Samsung QN900C is where you need to be at.

“Beyond making large screen sizes and premium picture quality more accessible than ever, openness and connectivity are what set’s our 2023 TV range apart.

Both models deliver bright highlights and a wide range of colours that have been validated by the experts at Pantone. High-resolution panels automatically apply real-time, scene-by-scene High Dynamic Range (HDR) effects with new Auto HDR Remastering to deliver extraordinary contrast. Plus, there’s not a bad seat in the house with Anti-Glare and Ultra Viewing Angle technology that displays clear 8K or 4K quality content at virtually any angle or light, producing vivid colour across the screen.

Samsung’s Neo QLED 8K TV line includes incredible picture quality with an Infinity Display design making it virtually bezel and border-free for an edge-to-edge 8K picture. Experience 8K quality in a billion colours with intense contrast powered by a grid of Samsung Quantum Mini LEDs.

Its ultra-powerful Neural Quantum processor plays content at its full potential and uses AI-based processing to upscale the picture to 8K resolution – no matter how the content was created. Plus, the viewing experience is complemented by life-like sound with Dolby Atmos, Object Tracking Sound Pro, Adaptive sound, and Q-Symphony 3.0.

With exceptional motion up to 4K 144Hz, Samsung Neo QLED 8K levels up your gaming experience with consistently crisp visuals at incredibly high speeds. The TV virtually eliminates lag and motion blur via Real Game Enhancer, while the combination of built-in features such as Xbox Game Pass, Game Bar, Ultrawide Game View, and Freesync Premium Pro help gamers take control, take on the competition, and take their gaming performance to new heights.
An up to 8K visual feat for your entertainment senses, Samsung have released their full smart TV line up for 2022.

STG was sent one of their top shelf models, the QN800B to give it a go over.

Being all screen the massive 65 inch Neo QLED has next to zero bezel (frame). This is more noticeable once you fire up the TV and start streaming or gaming.

But first there’s a bit of D.I.Y.

The weighted TV stand that’s included needs to be placed together.

As with previous years models, Samsung have not made any significant changes here.

There’s a rear stand mount that needs to be screwed in to the back of the tele, then the hefty base slots in to a connector which is then screwed in to the rear mount.

Fairly easy, but not a one person job.

From there you can power on and level up.

The QN800B will connect and integrate in to your existing home WiFi. There’s two ways to go through the approximately 7 minute set up.

Quickest is to use your smartphone, if you have a Samsung device and use the ‘Smart things’ app.

Manually, it is also straightforward but with a couple more manual steps involved.

Syncing up with your Samsung device takes a few shortcuts as it mirrors some of the settings from your phone.

Some years back Samsung opted to remove ports from their TVs and adopted the one cable.

This is a plug and wire that goes from the back of the TV to a connector box.

This year, the connector box seemed a bit wider and flatter.

Ideally you’d sit the connector box, or hub, below the TV, or at best somewhere that you can easily access the ports.

This years model has an ethernet (internet) port, a Display port, four HDMI’s with ARC and two USB sockets.

There’s a bonus USB port in the back too. More on that later.

Once you’re good to go it’s all screen time.

Depending on what settings you may have backed up already in the Samsung Cloud your Home Screen will show your most recent or preferred apps.

If you’re new to the world of Samsung – you can get yourself installing the likes of Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and more via the builtin Samsung store.

The Samsung smart TVs are built on a Tizen operating system. If you’re rocking a non-Samsung Android phone, you’re not going to be able to install apps from Google. This said, majority of the main entertainment apps are available in Samsung’s own store.

The QN800B has some built in smarts to it. You can mix a smart assistant in to control your tele, Alexa or Samsung’s own Bixby.

If you have a Samsung smart phone then do everything remotely with your phone.

The QN800B will also upscale or determine the best viewing for whatever you’re about to watch, adapting with Quantum HDR 32X feature.

For gaming it’s an eye blistering detailed and delicious 4K. If you’ve been shooting 8K footage on a high end Samsung phone, then playback on the QN800B in full 8K.

Easy to transfer over to – just tap the side of the smart TVs screen.

Samsung have, this year, made their TV remote for the QN800B rechargeable. Batteries are so last year.

With Dolby Atmos and object tracking the QN800B audio output that rivals some expensive Soundbars, the QN800B will depending on the media being played, give a cinema-like sound experience.

Now, that USB port in the back of the TV?

If wireless streaming from your Samsung smart phone is not possible, cable it in. Also – a recently released announcement from Xbox is that you can play your games in GamePass via the cloud on a new model Samsung smart TV.

Install the app and play away – connect your Xbox One / Series X|S controller either with bluetooth or cable in and boom. Game on. No Xbox console required.

As we saw earlier this year with their flagship smart phones, Samsung are being a bit more cost conscious and this 2022 65 inch QN800B model actually costs less than last years equivalent.

It is still an investment though – so be sure to pick the right model for yourself and your needs.

If you’re already in the Samsung ecosystem, the QN800B would be best bet (or the smaller 55 inch model).

Either way the QN800B gives you all of the benefits of a large screen, visuals second to none and now even gaming on the fly.

Samsung’s 2022 NEO QLED TV range is here.

And, yes, the higher end models cost a bit – so I wanted to know are they going to tick all boxes, is the pricing worth the experience? And of course most importantly, what’s the gaming experience like.

To find out I spoke with Peter Huang, the in-house Samsung Smart TV expert.

Shane: Hey Peter thanks for chatting with us at STG. Samsung has just released their Neo QLED Smart TV range for 2022. Can you give us a bit of info on what makes this year’s lineup better than last years?

Peter: Hey guys my pleasure. Sure thing, so in 2021 the Neo QLED range was a massive step up thanks to Samsung’s Quantum Mini LED which is 1/40th the size of conventional ones, this allowed us to pack in more LEDs which enhanced the details across the darkest and brightest scenes that non-Neo range couldn’t achieve.

In 2022, we improved the control of these mini LEDs further:

Two key techs I’d like to mention here that were not in 2021, is Shape Adaptive Light and 14bit processing.

Shape adaptive Light can control the light spread from the light source adaptively with on screen image in real time, allowing every edge, line and shape to pop out.

14bit processing further allows the TV to define the shades between the darkest and the brightest scenes, making it over 16000 shades, compared to 12 bit (just over 4000 shades in 2021), while conventional TVs are 10 bit (just over 1000 shades)

Basically, this year, you get an even sharper, more defined image than 2021’s Neo QLED range.

Shane: Buying a new TV is an investment that hopefully lasts a few years – and there’s a mixed bag of models and manufacturers out there. From the cheaper to the top tier price range. Where would the Samsung Neo QLED 2022 range sit in the pricing vs quality scale?

Peter: Absolutely, which in my opinion, with any investment, you’d want to hold onto it for as long as possible, you wouldn’t want it to get outdated or, in most cases, the content ‘outrun’ what your TV can do.

While we do position the Neo QLED range as our flagship range, there is still 2 options of Neo QLED 8K, and x3 Neo QLED in 4K that customers can choose from, as well as various sizes, so really, although it is the premium sector, there is a model for you to enjoy all the benefits of Neo QLED has to offer.

Shane: Samsung’s Neo QLED 2022 Smart TV’s are able to run apps – is that all apps and games from, say the Google Play store (webOS) or does the Samsung Neo QLED 2022 range run an alternative operating system?

Peter: Our TVs run on the Tizen OS platform and has its own TV app store. You can be assured that the core / common apps are ready to go out of the box, and you can customise to your taste. Samsung has been the Global #1 TV brand for 16 years, so app developers for TV content do prioritise designing apps for Tizen. As an example, in NZ, we were the 1st to have the Spark Sport app on a TV platform.

Shane: How is the 2022 Samsung Neo QLED Smart TV range ideal for gaming?

Peter: While the core features for gaming start with our QLED range (Q70B) such as low input lag, 4K 120fp + Freesync Premium, it’s really when you step up to the Neo QLED range, due to all the tech we discussed earlier, that it allows the game to truly shine, literally! Once you’ve experienced the HDR ‘pop’ and the specular highlights that Neo QLED can offer, you’ll be hooked.

Shane: How does the Samsung Neo QLED 2022.range stack up against competitors as a screen in the gaming space?

Peter: While you’d see some common call outs from various brands, at the end of the day, they are things that gamers are after, so it’s a must have when it comes to TVs. With that said, in 2022, we have a few things to keep us at the front of gamers’ mind:

On our QN95 and QN90 in 50” and 43” inch, which are our most premium TVs in that size, manage to offer 144hz in 4K when gaming with a PC.

We’ve made all 4 HDMI ports to be version 2.1 for gamers with multiple latest gen consoles or PC.

We also have enabled Super Ultrawide (21:9) mode for PC gaming, for titles that support, and not only that, but you can also enable multiview, watch walk through while gaming in super ultrawide view? Why not!

Samsung’s 2022 Neo QLED Smart TV range is available now.

Samsung Electronics New Zealand has today announced the local availability of its 2022 range of Soundbars featuring a world-first Wireless True Dolby Atmos experience.

The line-up of ten soundbar models have a new design and technical improvements that deliver an immersive and captivating sound quality.

Ryan Jolly, Samsung New Zealand Head of TV and Audio comments that Samsung continues to break barriers in audio innovation.

“The latest Soundbar range reflects Samsung’s dedication to constantly strive for audio excellence by producing quality 360-degree surround-sound and new calibration features that, when paired with any of Samsung’s 4K and 8K TV range, provide the customer with a fully immersive entertainment experience unlike anything they may have enjoyed at home before,” says Jolly.

The flagship Q990B incorporates 11.1.4ch surround sound including one subwoofer channel, four up-firing channels and two wireless rear speakers for an immersive Dolby Atmos & DTS:X experience creating an atmosphere of rich, room filling sound.

To offer a vivid surround sound effect, the 2022 soundbar line-up now incorporates new technology that allows for total sound calibration to the room. This includes enhancements to Q-Symphony, which allows for the soundbar to work alongside the speakers from the TV for an up to 22-channel Dolby Atmos experience when paired with compatible Samsung TV. Q-Symphony now has the ability to connect to all of the speakers on a compatible Samsung TV to execute audio in harmony with the soundbar, maximising the 3D sound effect on screen.

For a more customised experience, Space Fit Sound Advance will optimise the sound accordingly to the size of the room, it tests room reverberations from both the soundbar and subwoofer, while you’re enjoying your favourite content to continually ensure your Soundbar delivers an immersive performance, no matter what you are viewing or listening to.

“This latest range of Samsung soundbars truly transforms the home TV and audio experience for Kiwis with cutting edge innovations like Wireless True Dolby Atmos, Q-Symphony and SpaceFit Sound working harmoniously together to optimise the sound for the room and place you at the heart of the action,” says Jolly.

As more Kiwis wall mount their TVs, customers are increasingly looking for a soundbar that offers a complementary and slim design. The new S800B and S801B Ultra Slim Soundbars reset the standard in the slim soundbar category by packing a powerful punch at just 1.6-inch in depth and includes the same level of sound performance as existing, larger soundbars through Samsung’s proprietary technology. They deliver a powerful bass in the compact form by integrating passive radiator technology with its subwoofer and with true top-firing speaker channels it produces natural, room-filling Dolby Atmos sound. The slim, minimalist design is the ultimate in style, designed to sit perfectly underneath the TV or even separate as a standalone speaker.

Samsung soundbars support HDMI eARC Connection, Tap Sound and third-party connectivity features including Alexa, AirPlay 2 and built-in Chromecast ability, offering excellent usability with casting.

Samsung’s 2022 Soundbar range is available from June at selected retailers and online.

Samsung Electronics New Zealand announces its 2022 line-up of Neo QLED and Lifestyle TVs, revealing world-class advancements in picture and sound quality, more screen size options, customisable accessories and an upgraded Smart TV interface setting a new benchmark for Kiwi in-home entertainment.

Created to suit the evolving needs of how TVs are being used in New Zealand homes, Samsung Electronics New Zealand Head of TV and Audio, Ryan Jolly, says, “bigger and better screens, crisp sound and state-of-the-art picture quality remain of the highest priority for Kiwis as they look for premium at-home entertainment experiences. Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs bring exceptional levels of colour and brightness to the viewing experience, producing optimal and life-like picture, that can clearly be viewed in bright rooms.”

“The 2022 line-up of Neo QLED and Lifestyle TVs is more than just TVs, but a customisable and personalised screen that can be used to showcase and purchase art, experience content, work, play and connect with their favourite people. The innovations Samsung brings to its range in 2022 allows Kiwis to truly get the most out of their in-home entertainment.”

Thanks to the Neo Quantum Processor and the incredible picture technology and sound it delivers, the 2022 Neo QLED line up provides pristine images and immersive soundscapes that have never before been experienced.

This year’s Neo Quantum Processor introduces a new Shape Adaptive Light technology that leverages the Processor’s powerful AI algorithms to analyse lines, shapes and surfaces and control the shape of light from the advanced Quantum Mini LED backlight, maximising the brightness and accuracy of shapes on the screen. The result is outstanding image quality that puts HDR content on full display and unlocks the enhanced 14-bit HDR processing which quadruples Neo QLED’s greyscale levels compared to 2021 for the most accurate image ever produced on a Samsung TV.

Samsung’s 2022 Neo QLED also features Real Depth Enhancer, a multi-intelligence picture quality algorithm that creates a great sense of realism by determining and processing an object on the screen against its background to create a sense of depth.

Additionally, Samsung’s 2022 Neo QLED features the screen’s brightness and tone based on a built-in light sensor and sunset/sunrise information. As the ambient light changes, the screen will gradually reduce the amount of light and offer warmer tones, adjusting the blue light levels accordingly. This allows for a more comfortable viewing experience at night by reducing blue light.

Neo QLED’s sound features are getting a major upgrade as well. Building on OTS (Object Tracking Sound), which directs the sound to move across the room along with the object on-screen, 2022 Neo QLED will take their proprietary technology to another level with native Dolby Atmos support – the industry’s first TV to support Dolby Atmos with upwards and side firing speakers for three dimensional sound without the need for peripheral devices.

“Samsung’s 2022 Neo QLEDs will offer Dolby Atmos directly out of the box. We are proud to incorporate industry-leading audio technology for an impressive three-dimensional sound experience. With multi-channel speakers placed throughout the TV, Neo QLED delivers a dynamic sound experience that tracks the actions from all corners,” says Jolly.

With Samsung’s 2022 range of soundbars featuring a world-first Wireless True Dolby Atmos experience, the latest line-up soundbar models is the ultimate pair that delivers captivating sound quality for a truly immersive in-home entertainment experience.

Samsung’s 2022 Smart TVs come with a new Smart Hub that puts content curation and discovery front and centre with their viewing preferences. The new Smart Hub will guide users to their favourite content or help them discover something new without spending time searching. The Smart Hub’s sidebar also allows for a seamless transition between categories, Media and Ambient, letting users focus on various in-home activities.

Enjoy all the leading apps: Samsung allows Kiwis to explore all the leading apps on their new Smart Hub, including international apps like Netflix, Disney+, AppleTV, Amazon Prime, as well as local favourites such as Neon, SparkSport, Sky Sport Now and all the catch-up TV apps.

NFT Platform: Samsung has collaborated with the prominent NFT marketplace, Nifty Gateway, to bring the NFT experience to Samsung TV customers. The application features an intuitive, integrated platform for discovering, purchasing and trading digital artwork on Neo QLED and The Frame.

Smart Calibration: This feature allows users to fine tune the settings for optimal picture quality. Basic mode features a quick and easy way of calibrating the screens within 30 seconds using a compatible smartphone camera, while Professional mode optimises the screens for pristine picture quality in about 10 minutes.

Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle screens seamlessly blend design and technology for a unique and personalised experience. A new Anti-Glare Matte Display with anti-reflection and anti-fingerprint properties has been applied to The Frame, The Sero and The Serif, providing an exceptionally pleasant and comfortable viewing experiences. As a result, the new Anti-Glare Matte Display on Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle screens received three verifications from UL.

The Frame now offers an incredibly realistic art viewing experience thanks to the anti-glare, low-reflection panel technology featuring an embossed, Anti-Glare Matte Display. It also helps minimise fingerprints and smudges, allowing users to enjoy their favourite artwork in excellent condition. The Frame comes in sizes ranging from 32” to 85”.

The Serif also comes with a matte finish body to blend seamlessly with the Anti-Glare Matte Display, elevating the iconic design to give a premium look and feel. With the addition of a 65” size option, The Serif is now offered in sizes ranging from 43” to 65”.

The Sero offers an optimised watching experience with its new Matte Display in both vertical and horizontal modes and will now be available in both Blue and White coloured variants. The new vertical MultiView takes multitasking to the next level, allowing users to simultaneously view different content on the top and bottom of the screen, or search information online while watching.

“Most living spaces face the challenge of dealing with reflections and the ways it impacts people to view and enjoy visuals. With this in mind, Samsung has incorporated cutting-edge anti-glare and anti-reflection technology into the newest model of The Frame, The Serif and The Sero, providing a realistic experience for when utilising the TV in Art and Ambient Mode+.” concludes Jolly.

The 2022 Samsung TV models also come with expanded accessories to personalise the user experience. The Auto Rotating Wall Mount and Stand accessories allow compatible TVs to inherit the vertical viewing experience from The Sero, allowing users to enjoy mobile viewing by automatically rotating their screens all from the convenience of the remote control.

To complement the accessory, the 2022 products will support a vertical interface, including the Smart Hub, and offer a vertical Multi View feature. It will offer apps such as YouTube as well as mirroring and casting in vertical mode. Lastly, lifestyle features such as Ambient Mode+ and Art Mode are also available in vertical mode. The new rotation key on the remote control lets users easily rotate the screen with a click of a button.

Additionally, with magnetic bezel options for The Frame and new full motion slim-fit wall mounts for all TVs, there are endless possibilities of personalisation with Samsung’s 2022 screens.

The 2022 TV and accessories range is available from the beginning of May at retailers and online at samsung.com/nz/.

Upscale it, picture frame it and go full screen with Samsung’s 2021 Neo QLED 8K smart TVs.

Their new line up released a month or so back and Samsung sent STG a Neo QLED QN900A 8K 65 inch Smart TV over for us to play with.

These days 65 inches is an almost standard size in most homes, so when it arrived was surprised at how big the box was.

As I suspected it was mostly packaging – and packaged really well with the super slim TV nestled in between chunky protective layers of cushioning.

From the box there’s a wee bit of DIY before you’re streaming your fav shows or playing vid games in 4 to 8K.

The rear side of the Samsung Neo QLED QN900A 8K 65 inch Smart TV has the standard Vesa wall mounting option, but if you’re like me you’ll likely use the supplied stand.

Two steps are required to get this on. Screwing in the stand bracket to the back of the TV then sliding in the metal brushed solid metal stand and screwing that in too.

Easy enough, but a mission if you try and do it yourself.

Flip it round the right way, stand it up and power on.

Integrating the Samsung Neo QLED QN900A 8K 65 inch Smart TV in to your smart-home is a requirement unless you’re going to only use terrestrial television channels, but this would be a waste of what this TV has to offer.

If you’re already using a Samsung smartphone you’re IoT home integration is likely to be even easier.

Very few apps are built-in. You have the usual suspects of Netflix and YouTube and interestingly Amazon Prime has a dedicated button the TV’s smart remote.

Getting apps is as simple as going to the Samsung app store on either the TV or via your Samsung phone and adding any other streaming service you’re subscribed to or want to try out.

But for us gamers out there, the 8K and 8K upscale with a bezel-less frame (full screen edge-to-edge) is marvelous.

Whether you’re weapon of choice is Xbox or PlayStation (or even PC) the eye candy and detailed brilliant colour rendering is an absolute splendour.

Either last gen or current gen of home consoles output a fluid responsive graphically enhanced experience due to the zillions of Quantum LEDs and as with the 8K models of the past couple of years from Samsung, the smart TV will aim to upscale FHD and 4K to 8K where possible.

Couple that with the built-in Dolby audio or pair it up with Samsung’s Q950A Soundbar which is plug and play in to HDMI (ARC) and it’s full immersion.

Hardware wise you have x4 USB ports, x4 HDMI (incl. ARC), ethernet for cabled in internet, SP Audio and terrestrial aerial . These are not found on the smart TV itself, but on the connector hub.

Samsung have been doing this for a few years now to save on cable mess dribbling out from behind the TV.

Making use of a connector hub littered with all the ports you’re likely to need and connecting the TV to this via one cable also allows you to not necessarily have your external devices close to the TV.

As mentioned the Samsung Neo QLED QN900A 8K 65 inch Smart TV is borderless. There’s no chunky bezel surrounding the screen which also makes this TV a perfect décor accessory in your home.

Ambient mode will dim the TV and display works of art on a rotation, much like a screensaver, in a low power mode.

We are all aware that there’s not a lot of content out there in 8K. Not within subscription streaming services and physical Bluray discs. Yet. However, with the new gen of console gaming 8K is a reality that you’re eyes will very much appreciate.

Samsung have also made their last couple of generation Galaxy S Series 8K compatible for video – and at one tap to the side of the TV screen you can begin playing your vids on the TV.

Every year Samsung’s visual fidelity, pixel and LED count increase. So does their pricing, a wee bit.

The Samsung Neo QLED QN900A 8K 65 inch Smart TV are not the cheapest on the block, but you are buying a premium tele with an as yet unmatched visual experience.

If you’re in the market and cashed up there’s nothing wrong with a bit of a splash-out on what is a visual feast. Your streamed media and gaming goodness will be better for it.

Samsung Electronics has announced its 2021 portfolio of Neo QLED, MICRO LED and Lifestyle TV displays during its first-ever virtual First Look event ahead of CES 2021.

The new line underscores Samsung’s commitment to accessibility, sustainability, and innovation with new advancements that help redefine the role of television.

“During the past year, we have witnessed the pivotal role technology played in helping us carry on with our lives and stay connected with each other,” said JH Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Our commitment to an inclusive and sustainable future goes hand-in-hand with our relentless pursuit for innovation to meet consumers’ ever-changing needs – from reducing the carbon footprint of our products, to providing a suite of accessibility features, to offering an unparalleled viewing experience that fits each user’s lifestyle.”

Over the next few years, Samsung will embark on a journey to align its TV business with the following long-term sustainability programs:

Reducing Carbon Footprint and Improving Energy Efficiency: Samsung will seek to systematically decrease its overall carbon footprint in TV manufacturing. The company will also seek to lower user power consumption and use more recycled materials across its entire TV line.

Sustainable Packaging Design: Building on valuable consumer feedback, Samsung is expanding its ‘Eco-packaging’ design to all 2021 Lifestyle TVs and most of the 2021 Neo QLED line. This sustainable solution can upcycle up to 200,000 tons of corrugated boxes each year. By minimising text and graphic imagery on the Eco-packaging, the oil-based ink from colour printing that’s traditionally used on TV boxes is reduced, helping to further reduce waste.

Solar Cell Remote Control: In 2021, selected Samsung TVs will come with a solar-powered remote control that can be recharged by indoor light, outdoor light or USB, a first-of-its-kind innovation for the brand. This will help prevent waste from a projected 99 million AAA batteries over seven years. To construct the remote, Samsung innovated manufacturing process that upcycles plastics from recyclable bottles –including 24% recycled content.

Samsung’s 2021 accessibility features – now available on all 2021 QLED and Neo QLED models – bring the latest advances in technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help more people comfortably enjoy their TV experience. The 2021 line adds new features such as Caption Moving, Sign Language Zoom and Multi-Output Audio, giving those with impaired vision and hearing the ability to optimise their TV experience to their needs and preferences. By 2022, Samsung is committing to expand its Voice Guide feature, which provides audio guidance for those with hearing and vision impairment. And Samsung will continue to develop new AI based features to enhance the accessibility of Samsung TVs in the years to come.

Samsung is introducing a whole new display technology, Neo QLED, to its flagship 8K (QN900A) and 4K (QN90A) models. Samsung is taking QLED to the next level enabled by new light source, Quantum Mini LED precisely controlled by Quantum Matrix Technology and Neo Quantum Processor, a powerful picture processor optimised for Neo QLED.

Samsung designed the Quantum Mini LED to be 1/40 the height of a conventional LED. Instead of using a lens to disperse light, and a package to fix the LED in place, the Quantum Mini LED has incredibly thin micro layers filled with many more LEDs. Quantum Matrix Technology enables ultra-fine and precise control of the densely packed LEDs, which helps to prevent blooming, and allows viewers to enjoy content as its meant to be seen. Neo QLED increases the luminance scale to 12-bit with 4096 steps; this helps make dark areas darker and bright areas brighter, resulting in a precise and immersive HDR experience. And Neo QLED benefits from Samsung’s proprietary, powerful Neo Quantum Processor with enhanced upscaling capabilities. By using up to 16 different neural network models, each trained in AI upscaling and deep learning technology, the Neo Quantum Processor can optimize picture quality to 4K and 8K picture output regardless of the input quality.

Samsung’s 2021 Neo QLED 8K features a new Infinity One Design, a nearly bezel-less screen providing an even more immersive viewing experience in a sleek design and form factor. And Neo QLED 8K’s attachable Slim One Connect box, an all-new cable management system that can be attached to the TV’s back which allows for an easier install and cleaner aesthetic. The 2021 Neo QLED 8K also packs in several premium, room-filling audio features; Object Tracking Sound (OTS) Pro’s dynamic sound corresponds to the movement of objects on screen, and SpaceFit Sound analyses the installed TV’s physical environment and outputs immersive sound tailored specifically to your space.

Samsung’s 2021 Neo QLED 8K and 4K models offer smart features that expand the role of the TV and help consumers meet their changing needs when it comes to fitness, entertainment and the home office.

Samsung Health seamlessly transforms the home into a personal gym, and the new Smart Trainer feature tracks and analyses posture in real time, just like a personal trainer. During and post-workout, Smart Trainer provides feedback on form, helps you count your reps, and estimates calories burned. With video and interactive training via Bixby-enabled voice control, Samsung Health Smart Trainer elevates and personalises the home workout experience.

With two new exclusive features, Samsung is delivering the ultimate TV gaming experience. Super Ultra wide Game View gives gamers the option to play not only at the wide 21:9 aspect ratio, but even at the ultra-wide 32:9 ratios. The wider field of view ensures gamers don’t miss a moment of the action. And Game Bar lets players quickly monitor and adjust critical aspects of play whether that’s switching aspect ratios, checking input lag, or connecting a headset. Finally, FreeSync Premium Pro minimizes stuttering so players enjoy smooth picture quality throughout gameplay.

With Google Duo, consumers can use their phone to initiate a high-quality, high-speed video call that up to 32 people can join no matter which operating system they’re using. With Google Duo app, you can make video calls directly through an optional USB-connected camera. And with the smart camera solution, the camera can follow your movements. It will automatically zoom in and out so you’re just the right size, and in focus.

PC on TV on Samsung devices allows consumers to connect a PC to a compatible TV, enabling working and learning from home through the TV screen with a connected mouse, keyboard, and PC. Consumers can also directly access MS Office 365 through the TV’s web browser to create and edit documents. Simply install an Easy Connection app on your computer and log into your Samsung Account and your TV will automatically connect to your PC, helping to make working from the living room seamless.

In 2021, the promise of Micro LED comes home. With the new MICRO LED line, Samsung has made Micro LED available in a traditional TV form factor for the first time, bringing consumers a breathtaking visual experience on an ultra-large next-generation screen.

Available in 110’’, 99’’, and smaller sizes by the end of the year, the new MICRO LED line uses micrometer-sized LED lights to eliminate the backlight and colour filters utilised in conventional displays. It is self-illuminating, producing stunningly lifelike colours and brightness through its 24 million individually controlled LEDs. And with a Monolith Design defined by over 99% screen-to-body ratio, all you will see is the breath-taking picture quality.

Samsung has innovated its Smart TV features to take advantage of the new MICRO LED line’s massive screen. For example, consumers can use the 4Vue (Quad View) feature to comfortably watch up to four different content sources simultaneously on one screen. Viewers can connect multiple external devices to keep up with multiple playoff games at once, or stream a walk through while playing a video game, all in stunning quality and size.

Finally, the new MICRO LED’s dynamic audio experience is just as immersive as its visuals. With Majestic Sound, it delivers breathtaking 5.1 channel sound with no external speaker, transforming any room into a luxurious home theatre.

Samsung is also making enhancements to its 2021 Lifestyle TV line with new design and form factors to reflect the changing interests and tastes of consumers. Since launching in 2017, The Frame has redefined the television, transforming displays into stunning works of art, with over one million units sold.

The 2021 version builds on The Frame’s innovative legacy, offering a more customizable experience in a slimmer form. The Frame is about half thinner compared to previous iterations, mirroring the depth of a traditional picture frame. New attachable bezel options have been produced in five colour options and two different customizable styles, Modern and Beveled, to match the aesthetic of whatever room The Frame is in.

With a subscription to The Frame’s all-new Art Store, consumers will be able to enjoy 1,400+ carefully curated pieces. Samsung’s new AI-based auto-curation technology better analyses individual consumer preferences to recommend artwork.

With near-endless options for customisation, Samsung’s lifestyle TV portfolio including The Frame, The Serif, The Sero, The Terrace, and The Premiere immediately upgrade the décor of any home.

Drama’s, horrors, action, SciFi, when it comes to screentime biggest is always best.

Samsung’s 2020 range of QLED smart TV’s is out and STG received a 65″ to play around with.

Not too big, not too small, just right the first thing I noticed about the unit that was sent over is the lack of screen bezel. There isn’t one. All screen and vibrantly detailed at that.

The QLED teles still make use of the external chunky connector box – which is not such a bad thing. Two cables run from the TV, one for your A/C power and an almost invisible one-connect cord that goes to the hub.

The hub offers up a generous x4 HDMI sockets, LAN, DAT, Cable and the old school aerial sockets for traditional TV.

On the side of the hub is x3 USB 2.0 ports.

Using WiFi you’ll be streaming the likes of Netflix, Disney+, Shudder and more in glorious 4K… or 8K.

The QLED 8K Q950TS Smart TV will do it’s best to upscale media using A.I. to 8K, or at least the very best experience it can.

As YouTube videos can be a real mixed back of resolution output the Samsung QLED 8K Q950TS TV will scale accordingly and remove the pixels or fuzz from videos.

As for native 8K… well let’s face it the entertainment industry is not quite there yet. There’s not a lot out there. Some YouTube videos have been recorded in 8K but what I found was the Samsung QLED 8K Q950TS would stream it in 4K, then upscale it again to 8K.

While it did it real well, almost unnoticeable infact, it still wasn’t technically the native 8K.

Nonetheless the 8K range of smart TV’s are a future-proofing investment as both gaming and film industries play catch up, and if you have this year’s (2020) S Series or Note20 smartphones then these can record in native 8K. Via NFC – touching your Samsung flagship device to the side of the QLED 8K Q950TS you’ll auto sync and be able to watch your recorded video’s from your phone on the big screen. Easy as.

Gaming on the Samsung QLED 8K Q950TS Smart TV was pure splendour.

Yes games on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Pro played in 4K – however this new model upscaled. So, when I compared to a native 4K smart TV the QLED 8K Q950TS came out on top for granular detail, submerssive environments and zero graphic lag or stutters.

The Samsung QLED 8K 65″ Q950TS Smart TV not only has the Apps that you most likely would use off the bat it can also integrate in to your smart home setup.

The included bluetooth remote has miniscule options on it and for good reason – mostly the functions can be performed via voice or if you have a new-ish Samsung Galaxy smartphone you can wield your viewing via that using Samsung’s Smart Things.

This new range of smart TVs is also Alexa compatible. I thought I was clever using Alexa to control the TV… it actually ended up being more of a nuisance.

If my WiFi didn’t connect quick enough to the smart TV when first turning on Alexa began making endless alert noises – through the TV. When watching a TV series or film (even gameplaying) if something was said onscreen that remotely sounded like ‘Alexa’ the media I was playing would go silent as Alexa woke up and waited the 7 or so seconds for the next command.

So maybe – don’t integrate Alexa on one of these.

While Samsung have also released a killer 2.1 Soundbar to compliment their TV range (and while being a 2.1 it nearly gives my 7.2 home cinema a run for it’s money), you can enjoy what is the best in-built audio coming from the smart TV that I have experienced so far as it projects out via the full framed grill.

A new feature that Samsung have added in to their QLED range is object tracking audio. It’s like that real cinema experience (or my 7.2 home cinema setup) where the A.I. processor of the TV will accurately reflect the goings on on-screen as the subject sound goes left to right, up or down, roars in and fades.

The 2.1 Soundbar plugs directly in to the connector hub via HDMI and the Samsung QLED 8K will auto detect it and turn it on, change the audio source immediately as you begin your gaming or streaming marathon.

Connecting things.. pretty much anything that you plug in to the hub the TV will try and take control of it.

I have an amp which on it’s own is an HDMI selector, taking a few HDMI inputs. The Samsung QLED 8K Q950TS TV detected it immediately (similar to last years model) and would auto turn it on, flick to whichever HDMI the TV thought I was about to use on the amp. Both cool and unhelpful at the same time.

It very rarely got it right.

The Samsung QLED 8K Q950TS also auto picked up the PlayStation Pro and Xbox One. Turning either of those on powered up the TV and the Samsung 2.1 Soundbar (and my external amp).

This years range sees a 55 inch through to 85 inch and all of course 8K native.

They are an investment for sure and not the cheapest tele in the store, however if you’re wanting the best of the best to game, stream and be ready for the purported 8K revolution then the Samsung QLED 8K range maybe what you’ll need.
