Pokémon Champions now officially has a release date, and it’s arriving sooner than many expected.

The The Pokémon Company has confirmed that the new battle-focused title launches on April 8, 2026 for the Nintendo Switch, with support for Nintendo Switch 2 via a free upgrade patch. Alongside the date, we’ve also got a clearer look at how the game plays, plus some genuinely interesting new Mega Evolution abilities that could shake up competitive strategies.

Pokémon Champions Release Date And Platforms

Pokémon Champions will launch globally on April 8, 2026, bringing a battle-centric experience to Nintendo Switch players. A version optimised for Nintendo Switch 2 will also be available through a free update, offering improved visuals, though the exact upgrades haven’t been fully detailed yet.

The game is positioned as a free-to-play experience, meaning players can jump in without paying upfront. However, a Starter Pack bundle will be available on day one, offering optional extras like additional Pokémon storage, bonus music tracks, and other in-game perks for those who want a bit more.

A mobile version is also in development, and importantly, cross-platform play is confirmed. That means Switch players will be able to battle against mobile users, expanding the competitive pool significantly from day one.

Classic Battles With A Competitive Focus

At its core, Pokémon Champions sticks closely to traditional Pokémon battle mechanics. You’ll still be working with familiar systems like types, moves, and Abilities, which keeps things grounded for long-time players.

What sets it apart is its clear focus on battling as the main experience. Rather than a full RPG journey, this is built around competitive play, offering both Ranked Battles for players chasing the top and Casual Battles for those who just want to experiment or play more casually.

The game also connects with Pokémon HOME, allowing players to bring in select Pokémon from past games and even Pokémon GO. That opens the door for long-time fans to reuse their collections in a new competitive environment.

New Mega Evolution Abilities Introduced

One of the biggest surprises is how Mega Evolution is being handled. While the mechanic itself isn’t new, Pokémon Champions introduces entirely new abilities tied to Mega forms, something we haven’t seen before.

Several examples have already been confirmed, including Pokémon originally introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Mega Meganium – Mega Sol

Mega Meganium gains a new Ability called Mega Sol. This allows it to use its moves as if harsh sunlight is active, effectively boosting certain strategies without needing to set up weather conditions manually.

Mega Emboar – Mold Breaker

Mega Emboar comes with Mold Breaker, an Ability that lets its attacks ignore the opponent’s Ability entirely. That can be a major advantage in matchups where defensive or reactive abilities would normally disrupt damage output.

Mega Feraligatr – Dragonize

Mega Feraligatr introduces Dragonize, which converts Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves and boosts their power by 20 percent. This gives it access to a broader offensive toolkit while increasing its damage potential.

A Growing 2026 Pokémon Line-Up

Pokémon Champions joins what is shaping up to be a packed year for the franchise. Between recent releases, remasters like FireRed and LeafGreen returning, and new projects on the horizon, 2026 is clearly a major moment for Pokémon.

Within that line-up, Champions fills a specific niche. It leans into competitive battling, cross-platform play, and ongoing updates, rather than the traditional single-player adventure structure.

With its free-to-play model, integration with Pokémon HOME, and new twists on Mega Evolution, it looks designed to keep players engaged long-term rather than delivering a one-and-done experience.

What To Expect At Launch

When Pokémon Champions arrives on April 8, players can expect a mix of familiar mechanics and new competitive features. Ranked and Casual modes will be available from the start, along with access to Mega Evolutions and their newly introduced abilities.

The addition of cross-platform play and connectivity with Pokémon HOME suggests the game is aiming for a broad, connected player base right out of the gate.

If the balance holds up and the new abilities land well with players, Pokémon Champions could easily become a central hub for competitive Pokémon battles going forward.

When Pokémon Go launched in 2016, millions of players wandered around parks, streets, and city landmarks chasing virtual creatures. What most people didn’t realise at the time is that those same gameplay moments were quietly building one of the largest visual datasets of the real world ever created.

Nearly a decade later, that massive pool of images is being used to help delivery robots find their way through cities. According to new reporting by MIT Technology Review, the data collected through Pokémon Go has helped train an AI system that can determine location with centimetre-level precision just by analysing nearby buildings and landmarks.

Pokémon Go Players Helped Create A 30 Billion Image Dataset

Over the years, Pokémon Go players have collectively captured billions of images while interacting with real-world landmarks inside the game. These scans happened whenever players visited PokéStops, gyms, or completed in-game tasks that asked them to photograph statues, buildings, and other points of interest.

The result is an enormous dataset. According to reporting from MIT Technology Review, Niantic’s augmented reality games, including Pokémon Go and Ingress, have generated roughly 30 billion images tied to precise location metadata.

Each image doesn’t just contain a picture. It also includes information about where the phone was positioned, the direction it was facing, how the device was moving, and other sensor data. Combined across millions of players, that information forms detailed multi-angle views of real-world locations.

Many of these images are concentrated around more than one million landmark locations that players frequently visited in-game, such as battle arenas or notable public sites.

Niantic Spatial Is Turning That Data Into A World Model

The dataset is now being used by Niantic Spatial, an AI company created by Niantic to develop advanced mapping technology.

Its core system is called a Visual Positioning System, or VPS. Instead of relying only on GPS signals, VPS determines location based on what a camera sees in the surrounding environment. By comparing real-world images to its database, the system can estimate a position within a few centimetres.

That level of precision is difficult for traditional GPS to achieve in dense cities. Tall buildings can cause signals to bounce and interfere with each other, which often leads to location errors. In urban environments, a GPS marker on a phone can drift by dozens of metres, sometimes placing a person on the wrong street.

Niantic Spatial’s approach aims to solve that problem by using visual landmarks rather than satellite signals alone.

Delivery Robots Are The First Real-World Test

The first major deployment of the technology comes through a partnership with Coco Robotics.

Coco operates roughly 1,000 small sidewalk delivery robots across cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Jersey City, and Helsinki. These machines typically travel at around five miles per hour and carry items like takeaway meals or groceries.

So far, Coco says its robots have completed more than half a million deliveries while travelling millions of miles.

However, navigation has always been one of the hardest challenges for delivery robots. Dense city areas with underpasses, high-rise buildings, and busy streets often disrupt GPS signals, making it difficult for autonomous machines to determine their exact position.

With Niantic Spatial’s VPS system, Coco’s robots use four cameras to scan their surroundings.

By matching those images with Niantic’s massive database, the robots can more accurately determine where they are and where they need to go.

That precision could help robots stop in the correct pickup spot outside restaurants and arrive directly at a customer’s doorstep instead of a few metres away.

How Pokémon Go Gameplay Became Mapping Data

Pokémon Go’s design made it particularly effective at generating real-world mapping data.

Players were encouraged to visit specific locations and point their phone cameras at landmarks from different angles. Over time, the game even introduced features that rewarded users for scanning locations in detail.

Because millions of people contributed images of the same places at different times of day, lighting conditions, and weather situations, Niantic ended up with a diverse and highly detailed dataset.

According to Niantic Spatial CTO Brian McClendon, the company now has thousands of images for many of these locations. That allows the system to recognise landmarks reliably even when conditions change.

The Technology Could Go Beyond Delivery Robots

The Coco Robotics partnership is only the beginning of what Niantic Spatial calls a “living map” of the world.

The idea is to continuously update digital representations of cities as new data comes in. Robots navigating streets could capture additional images and feed them back into the system, gradually improving its accuracy.

Niantic Spatial CEO John Hanke says the long-term goal is to create a model that helps machines better understand real-world environments. While the technology originally aimed to improve augmented reality experiences, the rapid growth of robotics has opened up a different use case.

As robots begin to share sidewalks and public spaces with humans, systems that understand real-world surroundings with high precision could become essential for navigation and safety.

For now, though, the most immediate result is a surprising one. The same game that once sent players out hunting Pikachu may soon help robots deliver pizza more accurately.

Mewtwo was last widely available in standard raids back in July 2022. Its Shadow form did appear briefly over a weekend in March 2024, but many players have been waiting for a proper return ever since. For newer trainers, this will be the first realistic opportunity to add Mewtwo to their Pokédex.

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Dates And Locations

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 will take place across three in-person cities before culminating in a global event.

The schedule is as follows:

Tokyo, Odaiba area: May 29 to June 1

Chicago, Grant Park: June 5 to 7

Copenhagen, Fælledparken: June 12 to 14

The Tokyo venue will span Odaiba Seaside Park, Symbol Promenade Park, and Shiokaze Park, forming a large interconnected play area. Attendees can choose between morning sessions from 10:00am to 2:00pm or afternoon sessions from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, with a two-hour transition window in between.

Citywide gameplay will begin several days before each in-person event, allowing both locals and travelling trainers extra time to explore and complete event tasks.

While Mewtwo is featured in Tokyo’s artwork, it is widely expected to be available globally during GO Fest 2026, rather than locked to a single location.

Exclusive Legendary Birds For Each City

In addition to Mewtwo’s return, each host city will feature an exclusive Legendary Kanto Bird encounter:

Articuno in Tokyo

Zapdos in Chicago

Moltres in Copenhagen

These city-specific exclusives add another layer of incentive for in-person attendance. However, the broader focus of the event clearly centres on Mewtwo’s global comeback.

Mega Mewtwo And New Evolutions On The Horizon?

The timing of Mewtwo’s return has also reignited long-running speculation about Mega Evolutions.

Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y remain notably absent from Pokémon GO, despite many other Mega Evolutions already being introduced. With Mega Malamar and Mega Victreebel from Pokémon Legends: Z-A scheduled to arrive soon, fans are questioning whether GO Fest 2026 could finally be the moment Niantic rolls out Mega Mewtwo.

There has been no official confirmation yet, but the anniversary year context makes it feel like a natural opportunity.

Zeraora Hints Spark Mythical Debut Speculation

Beyond Mewtwo, Pokémon GO Fest 2026 branding has sparked speculation about the debut of the Mythical Pokémon Zeraora.

Observers have pointed to subtle blue lightning bolt motifs in the event’s logo, which align closely with Zeraora’s Electric typing and design themes. Zeraora recently received a new Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, adding further weight to the theory that it could make its Pokémon GO debut this year.

As with Mega Mewtwo, Niantic has not officially confirmed Zeraora’s arrival, but the hints have not gone unnoticed within the community.

A Major Milestone Year For Pokémon GO

This year represents a rare double celebration. Pokémon GO turns 10, while the Pokémon franchise itself celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Bringing back Mewtwo, arguably one of the most recognisable Legendary Pokémon ever created, feels like a deliberate move to anchor those celebrations in nostalgia while still pushing forward with new content.

More announcements are expected on Pokémon Day, February 27, when The Pokémon Company traditionally shares updates on upcoming games and expansions. With Generation 10 rumours circulating and Pokémon Legends: Z-A content already rolling out, GO Fest 2026 may only be part of a much bigger year for the franchise.

For now, though, one thing is certain. Mewtwo is finally coming back to Pokémon GO, and for many trainers, that alone is reason enough to start preparing raid teams for the summer.

Here’s everything trainers need to know before heading out to battle.

Kyurem Fusion Raid Day Date and Time

Kyurem Fusion Raid Day takes place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, running from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time.

The event is fully Remote Raid friendly, and with a higher Remote Raid Pass limit, global participation is expected to be high throughout the three hour window.

Featured Raid Bosses and Rotation Schedule

During the event, four powerful Legendary Pokémon will appear more frequently in raids:

Reshiram

Zekrom

Black Kyurem

White Kyurem

These Raid Bosses rotate every 30 minutes throughout the event.

Raid rotation schedule

2:00 – 2:30 p.m. Reshiram and Black Kyurem

2:30 – 3:00 p.m. Zekrom and White Kyurem

4:00 – 4:30 p.m. Reshiram and Black Kyurem

4:30 – 5:00 p.m. Zekrom and White Kyurem

After defeating Black Kyurem or White Kyurem, trainers will receive an encounter with regular Kyurem, not the fused forms.

Winning raids during the event also rewards Fusion Energy, which is required to fuse Kyurem.

Event Bonuses and Shiny Boosts

Several bonuses will be active during Kyurem Fusion Raid Day:

Increased chance to encounter Shiny Reshiram, Shiny Zekrom, and Shiny Kyurem from raids

Receive up to five additional free Raid Passes from spinning Gym Photo Discs, for a total of six

Remote Raid Pass limit increased to 20 from Friday, January 9 at 5:00 p.m. PST until Saturday, January 10 at 8:00 p.m. PST

These bonuses make the event one of the best opportunities yet to chase Shiny Legendaries and stock up on Fusion Energy.

Featured Attacks During the Event

Pokémon encountered from raids during Kyurem Fusion Raid Day will know exclusive Charged Attacks:

Reshiram will know Fusion Flare

Zekrom will know Fusion Bolt

Kyurem may know Glaciate

Glaciate is especially important, as it enables Kyurem’s new Fusion exclusive moves when combined with Reshiram or Zekrom.

How Pokémon Fusion Works in Pokémon GO

Pokémon Fusion allows certain Pokémon to combine into a single, more powerful form with a new appearance and abilities.

With enough Fusion Energy, Kyurem can fuse with:

Zekrom to become Black Kyurem

Reshiram to become White Kyurem

Fused Kyurem will remain in its fused form until the trainer chooses to separate it. Separating does not cost Fusion Energy or Candy.

Please note that Black Kyurem and White Kyurem cannot be traded, transferred to the Professor, or sent to Pokémon HOME.

Black Kyurem Fusion Requirements

To fuse Kyurem with Zekrom and create Black Kyurem, trainers need:

1,000 Volt Fusion Energy

30 Kyurem Candy

30 Zekrom Candy

Black Kyurem fully inherits Kyurem’s stats, so using a high IV Kyurem is strongly recommended.

To fuse Kyurem with Reshiram and create White Kyurem, trainers need:

1,000 Blaze Fusion Energy

Volt Fusion Energy and Blaze Fusion Energy

Volt Fusion Energy and Blaze Fusion Energy are rare resources used exclusively for Kyurem fusion.

Trainers can earn:

Volt Fusion Energy by defeating Black Kyurem in raids

Adventure Effect: Freeze Shock

When Kyurem that knows Glaciate is fused with Zekrom, Glaciate becomes Freeze Shock, Black Kyurem’s signature move.

Freeze Shock can be activated as an Adventure Effect using:

5,000 Stardust

5 Kyurem Candy

The effect lasts 10 minutes and causes encountered Pokémon to stop moving, making them significantly easier to catch, including with connected accessory devices.

The timer can be extended in 10 minute increments, up to two hours per use, and up to 24 hours total.

Freeze Shock cannot be active at the same time as another Adventure Effect. At this time, Black Kyurem cannot learn Freeze Shock via Charged TM or Elite Charged TM.

Adventure Effect: Ice Burn

When Kyurem that knows Glaciate is fused with Reshiram, Glaciate becomes Ice Burn, White Kyurem’s signature move.

Ice Burn’s Adventure Effect also costs:

5,000 Stardust

5 Kyurem Candy

For 10 minutes, the catch ring in Pokémon encounters moves more slowly, making Excellent Throws easier and improving catch rates overall, including with accessory devices.

Like Freeze Shock, Ice Burn can be extended up to 24 hours total and cannot be active alongside other Adventure Effects. White Kyurem cannot currently learn Ice Burn via Charged TM or Elite Charged TM.

Kyurem Fusion Raid Day Ticket and Web Store Box

For US$4.99, or the equivalent in local currency, trainers can purchase an event ticket that includes:

Eight additional Raid Passes from Gyms, for a total of 14

Increased chance to receive Rare Candy XL from raids

50 percent more XP from Raid Battles

Double Stardust from Raid Battles

These bonuses are active only during the event hours on January 10.

Tickets can be gifted to Pokémon GO friends with Great Friends status or higher. Tickets are non refundable and cannot be purchased using PokéCoins.

The Kyurem Fusion Raid Day Ultra Ticket Box will also be available on the Pokémon GO Web Store for the same price and includes the event ticket plus a bonus Premium Battle Pass.

A Must Play Event for Legendary Collectors

With Black Kyurem and White Kyurem making their Pokémon GO debut, boosted Shiny odds, and powerful Adventure Effects that change how catching works, Kyurem Fusion Raid Day is shaping up to be one of the most important raid events in recent memory.

As always, trainers are reminded to stay aware of their surroundings, follow local health guidelines, and keep an eye on official Pokémon GO channels in case of last minute changes.

A Long-Awaited Feature Arrives

After years of requests from the community, Pokémon GO is finally bringing remote trading into the game. The new feature arrived as part of this week’s major friendship overhaul, introducing a fresh tier called Forever Friends that sits above Best Friends and unlocks the ability to trade with players anywhere in the world.

Hi Trainers,

The Forever Friends and Remote Trade features are entering a phased rollout starting today, beginning with New Zealand.

We’ll share more information about when these features will be made available globally at a later date.

Stay tuned!https://t.co/szFHwh2l1s pic.twitter.com/tp0IEH1ENg

— Pokémon GO (@PokemonGoApp) December 8, 2025

It’s a massive step forward for a game that has always required trainers to stand next to each other to swap Pokémon. However, just like many updates in Pokémon GO, the new system comes with layers of rules, limits, and a few frustrating hoops to jump through.

How Forever Friends Works

Forever Friends replaces the old daily interaction system with a more detailed Friendship Points mechanic. Trainers now need 90 Friendship Points after reaching Best Friends to hit the new tier, which officially grants your first Remote Trade with that player.

Friendship Points can be earned by sending gifts, trading, battling together, or completing other friendship activities. Weekly Challenges offer an extra push, awarding up to seven bonus points if a group of four players completes a shared task. Event bonuses, such as double friendship gains, also apply.

Forever Friends is repeatable, meaning you can continue earning 90 points and unlock more Remote Trades with the same friend. There is one important limitation though: Remote Trades do not stack. If you earn one, you must use it before unlocking another.

Reaching Forever Friends for the first time also gives a special one-time reward, including XP and a new raid attack boost similar to the bonuses earned at lower friendship levels.

Setting Up a Remote Trade

Once you hit Forever Friends with another trainer, you can begin preparing for your first Remote Trade. Before you do anything, the game will prompt you to add a Remote Trade tag to the Pokémon you are willing to exchange. Only Pokémon with this tag appear to Forever Friends as tradeable options.

Starting a Remote Trade is a multi-step process where both trainers take turns choosing up to three Pokémon from the other’s tagged list as their “wish list.” Each trainer then selects one Pokémon from their friend’s wish list to offer in return. Both sides can confirm, cancel, or restart the trade at any point.

Remote Trades can be completed once per day across all friends, and they do not count as Special Trades. That means even Legendary or Shiny Pokémon won’t consume your daily Special Trade slot. Lucky Friends also work remotely, so the next trade will still produce a Lucky Pokémon.

The Big Catch: Heavy Restrictions

While Remote Trading sounds like a dream feature, Niantic has introduced several strict limitations. The most frustrating for many players is the 30-day rule. Any Pokémon caught in the last 30 days cannot be remotely traded, which prevents quick swaps of new species or freshly caught regionals.

Many familiar trading restrictions remain, including:

Mythical Pokémon

Shadow Pokémon

Previously traded Pokémon

Pokémon defending Gyms or Power Spots

Your current Buddy

Active Mega Evolutions

Fused Pokémon

Crowned Sword Zacian and Crowned Shield Zamazenta

Pokémon at Playgrounds

Players must also consider Stardust costs, which follow the same rules as local trading. Legendary, Shiny, and unregistered Pokémon will still cost more to trade.

A Boost to Social Features

Alongside the Forever Friends system, Niantic is expanding the maximum friends list from 450 to 650 over the next few weeks. Weekly Challenges have also been refreshed, letting players team up with up to three friends from anywhere in the world to complete group tasks for XP and Friendship Points.

A free Timed Research event will roll out from December 15 to December 29, offering rewards such as Stardust, XP, and an encounter with Scatterbug. All tasks must be completed before January 4.

A Step Forward, But Not Perfect

Remote trading is a feature the community has been asking for since Pokémon GO launched in 2016, and its arrival feels like a milestone for the game. Still, the new system is far more complicated than players expected, with long progression requirements and multiple restrictions that will slow down global trading networks.

Even so, this update finally opens the door for trainers to swap rare regionals, fill long-missing Pokédex entries, or complete collections with friends overseas. It may not be perfect, but for many players, it’s a long-overdue step in the right direction.
