Will Pokémon TCG Pocket become an esport? It’s a question that’s followed the game ever since it exploded in popularity, and now we have a clear answer. According to The Pokémon Company, there are currently no plans to turn Pokémon TCG Pocket into a major competitive title.

The clarification came during the recent Pokémon Europe International Championships in London, where Chris Brown, Director of Global Esports and Events at The Pokémon Company, spoke with media outlets about the game’s future.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Will Not Become An Official Esport

Despite Pokémon TCG Pocket generating an impressive $1.3 billion in revenue within its first year, Brown confirmed that the mobile card game is not being positioned as a main competitive title.

Speaking at EUIC, Brown said that while Pocket “feels great” in its current form, it is designed more as a “casual way for people to meet up” rather than a structured esport. He added that although the team is discussing ways to better support the Pocket community, including encouraging trading at live events, “there are no plans for it to be a main title.”

That effectively settles ongoing speculation about whether the mobile hit would join Pokémon’s official esports circuit.

How Pokémon TCG Pocket Is Used At Tournaments

Pokémon TCG Pocket has still carved out a presence at major events. It regularly appears as a side event at regional and international tournaments, giving players a chance to compete in small, informal brackets.

However, these are not part of an official championship circuit. There are no prize pools, no season-long qualification system, and no pathway to Worlds tied to Pocket.

The game itself also reflects its more accessible design. Decks consist of just 20 cards, the mechanics are streamlined compared to the physical trading card game, and matches are significantly faster. While newer expansions have added layers of strategy, the format remains simpler overall.

Some regionals have experimented with a two-deck format, requiring players to switch to a second unused deck after winning with their first. This rule has been introduced to encourage more card diversity, as the limited card pool can otherwise lead to repeated strategies and familiar Pokémon appearing across matches.

Pokémon’s Focus Remains On Established Competitive Titles

The Pokémon Company currently supports several competitive pillars.

These include the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game, the Video Game Championships format played on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon UNITE, and Pokémon GO.

Brown’s comments indicate that this structure is not changing in the immediate future. Pokémon TCG Pocket is not being added to that lineup, and it is not being prepared for a formal esports circuit.

Interestingly, the VGC format is set to move to the upcoming Pokémon Champions for the World Championships in San Francisco. While no release date has been confirmed for Champions yet, further announcements are expected soon as the franchise approaches its 30th anniversary celebrations.

That context makes it clear that Pokémon’s competitive roadmap is focused elsewhere.

A Competitive Feel Without A Competitive Circuit

It’s worth noting that Pokémon TCG Pocket does offer competitive-style battles. Players can face opponents from around the world, build optimised decks, and test strategies in ranked environments.

But competitive mechanics alone do not equal esports status. Without an official circuit, structured tournaments, or a championship pathway, Pocket remains positioned as a complementary experience rather than a flagship competitive title.

For now, Pokémon TCG Pocket continues to thrive as one of the most successful mobile apps in the franchise’s history. Just don’t expect to see it on the Worlds main stage any time soon.

This win is especially big for the Latin American scene, with Peru lifting the trophy after years of coming close. They battled through some of the strongest teams in the world and proved that this year, no one could stop them.

The Road to the Title

Peru’s run wasn’t without challenges. The team started slow, but once they found their rhythm, they tore through the bracket. They took down Luminosity Gaming before facing off against Japan’s powerhouse ZETA Division in the grand final.

ZETA Division, known for their sharp strategies and consistency, pushed Peru to the limit. But when it mattered most, Peru kept their cool, closed out the series, and secured their first ever world title.

Final Standings and Prize Pool

Here’s how the top four shaped up at Worlds 2025:

🏆 1st – Peru UNITE – $100,000

For Peru, this wasn’t just a win on stage, it’s a statement that Latin America is a serious contender in the Pokémon UNITE competitive scene.

A Championship to Remember

This year’s Pokémon UNITE finals had everything fans could want, tense matches, smart plays, and a storyline that ended with a long-awaited breakthrough. Peru’s victory is bound to inspire a new wave of players in the region, and with how quickly the competitive scene is growing, Worlds 2026 is already looking unmissable.

For now, though, it’s Peru’s time to celebrate. After all the battles, they stand at the top of the Pokémon UNITE world.

From 15–17 August, Anaheim Arena will host 32 of the best teams from around the globe. Well, it was meant to be 32. Five squads, including China’s Nova Esports and Peru’s INFAMOUS, have dropped out, leaving 27 in the running. But the format’s still the same, and it’s going to be intense.

Day One, Group Stage Battles

The tournament kicks off with a group stage, splitting teams into eight groups. Each match is a best-of-three, round-robin style. With some groups now only having three teams, every win (and loss) will carry even more weight. Only the top two from each group will make it through.

Day Two, Knockout Rounds

The remaining 16 teams will clash in a single-elimination bracket. Matches stay best-of-three until we hit the semi-finals, where the pressure ramps up to best-of-five series.

Day Three, The Grand Final

It all comes down to this – two teams battling in a winner-takes-all best-of-five showdown for the title of 2025 Pokémon UNITE World Champions. On top of the trophy and glory, the champs will take home a sweet $100,000. Here’s the full breakdown.

Build your team. Represent your school. Compete this fall.

This marks a pretty massive moment, not just for Pokémon fans, but for scholastic esports in general. It’s the first time The Pokémon Company has partnered with a third party like this to run an official school league. Basically, Pokémon just went from your childhood after-school activity to a legitimate varsity-level competition.

So, what is PlayVS?

If you haven’t heard of PlayVS (Play Versus) before, it’s the leading amateur esports platform in North America. Think of it as the platform that brings organised, competitive gaming into schools, just like school rugby or netball. PlayVS works with high schools, middle schools, and even colleges to give students access to structured esports leagues, complete with coaches, schedules, leaderboards, and real prizes.

They’re officially partnered with big names like the NFHS Network, Special Olympics, and a heap of state and regional bodies. And now, with Pokémon UNITE on board, they’re levelling up even further.

Pokémon UNITE: In the classroom, for real?

Yep, it’s happening. After a small pilot season earlier this year, PlayVS is now making it official. Pokémon UNITE, a team-based 5v5 MOBA game that’s free to play on Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, is joining their competitive line-up.

Image credit: The Pokémon Company International

What makes this a great fit for schools? The game’s all about teamwork. Players have to strategise, communicate, level up their Pokémon, and outplay the other team, all within a tight time limit. It’s fast, fun, and (surprisingly) full of life skills like critical thinking, leadership, and collaboration.

As Jon Chapman, CEO of PlayVS, put it:

“Bringing Pokémon UNITE into the classroom through structured competition is a meaningful step forward for PlayVS and scholastic esports as a whole. Pokémon has inspired generations of players, and we’re proud to help students connect with the franchise in a new and competitive way.”

What’s in it for the students?

Aside from getting to play Pokémon at school (which is already a dream come true), teams who dominate their local competition will get invited to the PlayVS Cup, the national championship event. There, they’ll compete for scholarships and national bragging rights.

Guess I need to make the Pokémon Unite club at school this year 😳 https://t.co/fe9lxMPv0m

— Mr. Professor Di 🤘🏻 (@MrProfDi) August 6, 2025

And while Pokémon UNITE is the headline this season, PlayVS already supports a stack of other popular titles like League of Legends, Rocket League, Overwatch 2, Call of Duty, and more through their PlayVS College League and high school offerings.

Pokémon isn’t just for kids anymore

Let’s be real, Pokémon never really left our lives. But seeing it take this big leap into structured school competitions is huge. It shows how much the world of gaming, and especially esports in education, has grown.

Now, with this partnership, kids who once battled Team Rocket on the couch can now compete for real-life titles, scholarships, and a chance to be part of something bigger, all while playing one of the world’s most beloved franchises.

Wanna get involved?

Schools across the U.S. and Canada can sign up for the Fall season and learn more over at playvs.com.
