After more than a decade in hiding, Ninja Gaiden 4 has finally landed, marking a triumphant return for gaming’s most famous ninja, Ryu Hayabusa. Co-developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, this latest entry revives the legendary hack-and-slash series with a perfect blend of blistering combat, stylish presentation, and cutting-edge performance, especially on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

On Metacritic, Ninja Gaiden 4 holds an impressive 83% average on Xbox Series X, 82% on PS5, and 82% on PC, while OpenCritic sits at 82%, signalling a return to form for the once-dormant franchise.

A Sharpened Return to Form

After a decade in the shadows, Ninja Gaiden 4 brings the series roaring back with everything fans could want from a modern hack-and-slash revival. Set in a futuristic Tokyo drenched in neon and cursed by a never-ending rain, the story follows newcomer Yakumo of the Raven Clan, who sets out to resurrect the Dark Dragon in hopes of cleansing the world. Naturally, legendary ninja Ryu Hayabusa isn’t thrilled about the idea, and the two warriors’ fates quickly intertwine in a tale that’s part cyberpunk epic, part classic martial arts fantasy.

Gameplay-wise, Ninja Gaiden 4 finds a sweet balance between challenge and precision. Combat flows with the kind of speed and fluidity that fans of Team Ninja and PlatinumGames would expect. Switching between Yakumo’s weapon-focused style and Ryu’s elemental ninpo abilities keeps every encounter dynamic and deeply satisfying. Mastering parries, dodges, and devastating combos still defines the experience, but the controls are now more approachable without sacrificing depth.

Image Credit: PlatinumGames Inc. / Team NINJA / KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD.

Critics Praise Combat, Accessibility, and Style

Reviewers have highlighted the game’s fluid combat, deep endgame content, and smart balance between difficulty and accessibility. DualShockers gave it a 9.5/10, calling it the “gold standard for fast-paced, high-octane 3D action games.” IGN Italia scored it 85/100, praising the collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames as “spectacular, technical, and immensely satisfying.”

Not every review was glowing, some outlets noted uneven visuals, occasional camera hiccups, and limited weapon variety, but most agreed that the strengths far outweigh the flaws. The result? A game that redefines the franchise for modern audiences without losing its old-school soul.

PS5 Pro Takes It Up a Notch

According to a detailed report by Twisted Voxel, Ninja Gaiden 4 is one of the first major titles to fully leverage the PS5 Pro’s upgraded hardware, and the difference is significant.

While the standard PS5 version includes three display modes (Quality, Performance, and 120fps), the PS5 Pro introduces a fourth exclusive mode, “Pro Mode”, which runs at a native 1440p resolution with 60fps performance and high graphical settings.

The Pro version also replaces AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) with Sony’s proprietary PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology, delivering sharper visuals and cleaner motion during Ninja Gaiden 4’s frantic combat scenes. Frame rates remain remarkably stable across all modes, proving Team Ninja and PlatinumGames’ attention to optimisation.

Image via Twisted Voxel

As Twisted Voxel notes, the PS5 Pro’s Pro Mode “offers the most balanced experience, combining high graphical detail with fluid 60fps performance,” making it the definitive way to experience Ryu’s return.

A New Era for the Ninja Legacy

Ninja Gaiden 4 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. Instead, it sharpens what already made the franchise great: fast, precise combat, stylish set pieces, and a demanding yet rewarding gameplay loop.

For longtime fans, it’s a nostalgic reunion. For newcomers, it’s an accessible entry point into one of gaming’s toughest but most satisfying action series. And for PlayStation 5 Pro owners, it’s a showcase of what the upgraded console can truly do when developers commit to optimising for its power.

Whether you’re slicing through demons in Tokyo’s rain-soaked alleys or chasing leaderboard perfection, Ninja Gaiden 4 proves that Ryu Hayabusa, and the series itself, are far from finished.

Verdict

Ninja Gaiden 4 is a stylish, confident revival that honours its past while embracing modern hardware and design. The partnership between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames has breathed new life into the franchise, balancing spectacle with depth and accessibility with mastery.

If this is the start of a renewed era for the series, fans have every reason to be excited.

Platinum Games just goes from hit to hit.

Their ability to make unique and interesting combat mixed with some truly brilliant unique IP makes them a consistently brilliant studio. Bayonetta was one of these, which looked doomed to be a cult classic until Nintendo backed the franchise and kicked off Bayonetta 2.

Now by some miracle their success has been rewarded and we have the new and awesome Bayonetta 3.

Bayonetta 3 kicks off with a strange battle happening. She is going head to head with some being called the Singularity. In this battle she saves her friend Viola through some kind of portal right before being killed.

Yup Bayonetta is killed in the opening moments of Bayonetta 3.

We then jump into a new mission where Bayonetta is living her normal earthly life and she takes out a giant beast, as per usual. Confused yet? Because I bloody was. Suddenly Viola falls from the sky and Bayonetta and the team are left confused.

It turns out that we are getting all Dr Strange in this business with the multiverse. The Singularity being is going from universe to universe killing their versions of Bayonetta. This leaves Viola and Bayonetta’s usual band of misfits must go through the multiverse to stop it. The story is absolutely bonkers and I love it, though as the goes on it becomes weaker as we don’t get too much into the villain or his motives, or anything like that. There are some daft story lines including a bit of romance that fits the game but is a touch, well just uninteresting. But that’s not new to the series either.

The real reason to play Bayonetta 3, as with previous entries, is that sweet gameplay.

Bayonetta 3 overhauls the combat a fair bit. Getting into the nuances will be boring for me to write and for you to read so I will say it is as smooth and fun as ever to go toe to toe with enemies. The biggest change to this is that she can now summon her demons to fight.

The demons used to just be bad ass finishers, but now you can just use the demon when you have enough energy. They are super overpowered and satisfying to use, but to keep the game in check there are limitations. The best one is that while the demon is summoned and eating the enemies, Bayonetta is stuck standing still. It only takes one hit for her to cancel the summoning which makes the use of it really strategic at times. It didn’t stop me from liberally using this power, but it did stop me just spamming it and wiping up every encounter.

She also burns through the bar pretty quickly so this stops you from abusing it all the time.

The game looks pretty damn fantastic as well. It is built to run on the Switch so doesn’t look flawless on a big TV, but the stylistic choices look awesome regardless of resolution. When playing on the go though it looks so fantastic in handheld mode.

As with previous entries Bayonetta 3 is equipped with an amazing soundtrack and solid voice acting. There is really something to the elegance of the music and the visual styles that add a relaxing yet chaotic tone to the games.

Bayonetta 3 is another excellent entry in the Bayonetta series. The story is standalone enough that anyone wanting to check it out wouldn’t have to play the first 2 games. But you really should, they kick ass too.

It has its minor weaknesses but on the whole Bayonetta 3 is just a fantastic game well worth your time.

Like many people I never owned a Wii U, so there were so many excellent games trapped on the platform that it seemed like I would never play.

One of these was The Wonderful 101, a Wii U exclusive that was so well received it was one of the reasons I considered buying a Wii U many years on. Fortunately after a successful Kickstarter campaign, The Wonderful 101: Remastered has landed not only on Switch, but also PS4 and PC so we finally get to check out this intriguing action game.

The Wonderful 101 is set in a world where 100 heroes, known as the Wonderful 100, protect the people from all manners of chaos. The story itself is pretty paper thin, there is an attack by aliens, and the 100 heroes plus 1 team up and save the world. I mean it’s not why you’re playing a game like this but it’s light hearted and fun enough to be engaging.

The reason you will want to check this game out is because of the weirdness expected from a Platinum game and it’s weird, even for them. Platinum fans are familiar with the bonkers and unique 3rd person action games that can be a bit hit and miss even though I like their misses. The Wonderful 101 is an isometric action game which despite being a different angle, is a totally different genre with different requirements for them to be making a game in.

The character you control at the time, which varies, runs around saving people who get powered up and temporarily join the team. The more people you have in your team the bigger your Unite Morph abilities are. This is where you draw a shape using the analogue stick which then fuses the people’s bodies into a weapon of that shape. These shapes vary including a circle to make a massive fist, a line for a sword, and a rudimentary gun shape for a gun, then your character has that weapon for puzzles or fighting.

That is where the classic Platinum weirdness comes in, as only their minds could find such a weird thing to implement in a isometric action game, and for the most part it works. Whipping out the sword with all of your temporary members never ceased to be satisfying, though other shapes can be frustrating to get the hang of, especially using that analogue stick. Once you learn its intricacies it gets more fluent, but I never got consistently good at making the shapes right.

That is where the gameplay sticks its landing.

The gameplay is fun and fluid, if at times frustrating, and as you go you buy upgrades that make the combat even more fun. I don’t want to spoil more of it because a lot of the fun is uncovering them but the above should cover if it is going to be a game for you or not.

The other thing that makes the game special is the colours and music. The game definitely looks like an older game that has been given a new coat of paint but thanks to excellent design in the original game, it still works. Simple details in the world and characters are made up for with the bright colours that saturate the screen. The average voice acting is made up for with an amazing soundtrack that definitely justifies the volume being turned up.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered is a game that I am glad to have finally played. It feels so quintessentially Platinum, and yet thanks to a shift in genre it is even unique for them.

It takes a long time to get the hang of, but it is so much fun to play as you learn and you don’t need a Wii U to play it anymore.

When PlatinumGames is on point, there is not much better than what comes out of their studios. Known for their licensed games being hit and miss, when the studio makes its own IP like Bayonetta or Nier Automata, their games tend to be the creme-dela-crème.

With their new Nintendo Switch exclusive Astral Chain being their latest new IP, it is easy to get hyped up before you know more about the game. This meant I was keen to go in blind, for better or for worse.

Astral Chain sets you in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has been battling these mysterious creatures called Chimera. Chimera are monsters that enter the earth through mysterious red doorways that can appear anywhere, but they can’t be seen by most humans. The few that can do so because they have been impacted by enough matter from the astral plane or they have a legion, which are Chimera like creatures who are attached to their masters thanks to an astral chain, which is a literal chain that keeps them under control. When not in use the Legion gets stored in a wristband on its human.

The story kicks off with you choosing a male or female sibling who have grown up to be cops. In an attack they find themselves quickly getting a Legion of their own to help fight the Chimera like their father does. A little bit of plot ensues before you find yourself as the first human in the astral plane, and after your team joins you the Legions set themselves free from their astral chains. Your character is the only one to successfully recapture your Legion, and so the plot kicks off.

I don’t want to touch the story much more than that, because you deserve to enjoy it for yourself, but given how many game plots these days are reskins of the same story, I enjoyed how Platinum managed to make something so different.

The gameplay itself take a bit of time to get used to as you control your character to run around fighting, and when you summon your Legion it will automatically attack unless you hold the shoulder button which allows you to move the Legion around at will. In battle this took a little to get used to, but is well worth that adjustment period as it allows you to control how the fight goes, and use way more awesome moves like fashioning your chain to snare an enemy, or fling enemies that charge at you back like a slingshot. This gives the game a unique flavour that is interesting enough to justify taking the time to get your head around the combat.

Exploring the world relies on the Chimera as well as your character doesn’t jump, which on its own is weird for a Platinum game, so traversing gaps and platforms relies on your Legion. You can send your Legion out over gaps as they hover above the ground, so you can walk up some stairs, move your Legion across to an area, and then get it to pull you across using the chain.

Harder to reach platforms can be done via anchor points that you fling around when being pulled, but I found occasionally you would catch the edge of a crystal in the astral plane which would cause you to fall which was annoying to predict when trying to navigate difficult to see spots.

Exploring also incorporates the legions you collect and their unique skills, such as the dog legion allowing you to sniff out clues or dig up buried items.

Chimera can also be protected by other chimera that need to be sniped out of the sky first before you can attack them, or large items may need to be lifted to travel through an area using the Legion with massive arms. It is used just enough to make them worthy mechanics, but not so much that it gets too tedious.

Astral Chain is one of these games that early on feels way too complicated, but as you play it becomes more natural, and a lot more fun. Added to the absolutely beautiful look which seems far too good for a game on the Switch, and a soundtrack that kept me from listening to podcasts when not playing, it is a different experience to what Platinum has made before, but still feels like a game that could only come out of them.

The Wii U had some fantastic games, and Nintendo wants you to know it.

Since the Nintendo Switch’s release, some of that generations consoles best games have been ported over, from Mario Kart 8, to the criminally underrated Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, and now to Bayonetta 1 and 2.

The story goes that Nintendo worked with Platinum Games to save the development of Bayonetta 2, and thus giving Nintendo one of the best third party exclusives the Wii U ever had. But the ambition of the game, blowing past even the lofty heights of its predecessor, also blew past the technical capabilities of its console. And while it was certainly enjoyable, the inconsistent frame rate was always a bit of a bugbear.

So while on the Nintendo Switch the screen resolution is still just 720p, the frame rate is greatly improved over the Wii U releases, which makes the game significantly more enjoyable to play. And while it’s such a cliche to continue to bring this up, while playing Bayonetta 1 and 2 in 720p in handheld mode the game really shines. It still slightly blows my mind that we are getting ambitious, full featured 3D games to take with us wherever we want.

And really that’s all there is to talk about in terms of this port. There are no other significant graphical enhancements or changes to the game. The bonkers, inscrutable story remains, the fantastic gameplay remains, the overt, sexualised presentation remains. It’s the same game, but better and you can take it on the go.

That’s not to say that there haven’t been some minor improvements. The multiplayer Tag Climax can now be played locally on two Switches rather than just online. Sadly I was unable to try this out in person. In addition, Amiibo support for unlockable costumes has been beefed up. You can scan up to 32 per day, which kind of breaks the game and can be used to easily farm halos for upgrades.

Physical purchases of Bayonetta 2 on cartridge will also include a download code for Bayonetta 1, but if you opt for the eShop version you’ll only get a discount on the first. It’s a strange strategy, so I highly recommend aiming to get this on a physical cartridge. That’s also because the two games downloaded will use over half of the Switch’s usable system memory at about 17GB total. Suddenly my 64GB SD card is looking like it was a shortsighted purchase.

In terms of the first game, it’s a serviceable port that runs well at the same resolution and target frame rate as Bayonetta 2. But after playing Bayonetta 2, it’s easy to miss the raft of improvements the sequel brought to the table, let alone the improvements in graphical fidelity that the recent PC port makes available.

Bayonetta 2 was a buried treasure on the Wii U, but on the Switch it has a new home that will expose it to a far greater audience, finally giving it the exposure it deserves.

And while the improvements are slight, the Switch gives you a more stable version of the game docked and retains the 720p presentation with better performance than the Wii U in portable mode opens up this game for a whole generation of Switch owners that never got to see what is a fantastic sequel to an innovative game.

Bayonetta 1 and Bayonetta 2 remain some of the best work developer Platinum Games has ever done, and putting the games on more consoles can only be a good thing. If you have never tried Bayonetta before, here is your best chance. And if you have played the games before, it’s still worth another shot to try it on the Switch and everything that entails.

YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED THE GAME WHEN YOU THINK YOU HAVE FINISHED THE GAME, reads a key section of the NieR: Automata reviewer’s guide (yes, in capitals), and it succinctly sums up the entire game. You may think you know what NieR: Automata is, but it takes delight in twisting and warping itself in unexpected and welcome ways. Where innovation in gaming often simply means a new weapon or slightly redesigned HUD, NieR: Automata embraces the weird and wonderful and it, surprisingly, works far more often than you would initially think. It energetically defies genres and categorisation.

Developed by Platinum Games and creative guru Yoko Taro, NieR: Automata is technically a follow-up to 2010’s Nier, but there are almost no direct links between the two. Instead, Automata more closely aligns itself to Platinum Games’ other titles like Bayonetta 2 and the underrated Transformers: Devastation. And this is no phone-home title like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, this is a game into which Platinum have clearly placed a huge amount of energy and soul. It goes well beyond the basic mechanics and structures of its previous titles, with twists, turns and surprises not only in the narrative but also in gameplay that take this game well beyond a hack and slash brawler.

And that’ because Nier: Automata isn’t afraid to shift things up. One moment you’ll be controlling the android protagonist 2B in a fully 3D world, then the next minute – within the same Level – be moved to a 2.5D platformer before being shoved into a top-down shoot-em-up. That’s without mentioning the surprisingly deep RPG mechanics – upgrades to your stats, weapons and pods which houses your ranged attacks. It keeps you on your toes, and it made me curious approaching every major fight. What new or bizarre twist would I face?

NieR: Automata is a game that is designed to be replayed. Your “playthrough” isn’t actually complete at the end of the credits. The game opens up after multiple “finishes” and seeing the credits is more like finishing a chapter in any other game. As anyone who has replayed a game before can tell you, it’s often only after a few goes through do the mechanics, lore and environment come together in a way that can be sometimes revelatory. Trying games on different difficulty levels, for example The Last of Us, can vastly alter how you approach individual scenarios and the game as a whole. Automata explicitly not only recognises this, but rewards it. There are even a number of joke endings that take the seriousness and weight of the game and self-reverentially throw it all out the window.

A strange, but deliberate omission is the lack of auto save and most check-pointing, which the game warns you about repeatedly. While there are lots of save points anyway and the PS4’s suspend function can cover over this somewhat, make sure to let anybody else who uses your console know lest you lose any progress [speaking from experience!].

It seems all the creative energy went into the gameplay, not the graphics – at times Nier looks like an upscaled PS2 game, but it does attempt to run at 60FPS. This is good trade-off for this sort of game, although I had noticeable lag, frame-time spikes and frame drops in the game. Nevertheless, I have a feeling that Automata is pushing the system to the limits, judging by how many decibels the fans were kicking out on my PS4.

One of the more intriguing systems in the entire game is an innovative online death system. You encounter other downed androids, real players, in the environment and can pray for them and refill health but also reap them for parts. Alternatively, you can have them fight alongside you for a while. However this is risk/reward as they may turn against you.

The combat is typically excellent Platinum Games fighting. Light and strong attacks, combos and movements are all here and feel great. Like in Bayonetta, dodging at the last second gives you the opportunity to get some free hits in. You can switch weapons and even loadouts on the fly and when done mid combo can create some very stylish moves. If you have played any Platinum Games in the last few years, you know what you’re getting, and you’re likely excited about that.

With a number of allies and enemies on the screen, it can become very difficult to identify your target and see their telegraphs. With dodging such an important part of the combat flow, not being able to see when an enemy is attacking you can be fairly annoying. This is not a problem in fights with larger enemies but some human-sized fights were quite confusing.

A few slightly missed elements mar what is otherwise an excellent experience. The lack of auto-saves seem unnecessarily punitive, and out of step with modern game design. The map is difficult to follow, and it can be hard to know at times where you need to go next (hint: try walking out into the main world, it usually triggers a conversation). The level of detail on some of the artwork is disappointing for a 2017 title, especially given the sumptuousness of some of Platinum’s other titles. But in the end this is a game about combat, and it does that extremely well.

It’s hard to say what is individually so great about NieR: Automata. Its world-building perhaps? Well yes. Its combat? With Platinum Games at the helm, obviously? Its soundtrack? Yes, it’s amazing. Its story? Melancholic and reflective, it’s one of the best in the developer’s stable. But in my view its nearly everything else that makes the game so special. It’s a restless game, always hungry to try something new and never let you get bored. In a game that attempts so much its almost surprising that it really does pull it off. If you’ve become a bit bored with games of late, excellent as they’ve been, NieR: Automata was made for you. To me, the game represents not only a great play experience, but a challenge to other games to step up and give us something as fresh, complex and unexpected as what this game presents. While none of its parts individually is that innovative, as a package, and the very specific way that it is wrapped makes this an experience not to be missed.

Square Enix has unveiled further details regarding its upcoming third-person action role-playing game (RPG) NieR: Automata, the follow-up to the 2010 cult hit NIER which is in now in development in collaboration with PlatinumGames Inc.

During an exclusive stage presentation from the Square Enix booth at Paris Games Week 2015 earlier today, NieR: Automata producer Yosuke Saito (DRAGON QUEST X / NIER) and director YOKO TARO (Drakengard / NIER) unveiled a brand-new trailer – giving viewers their first look at the action gameplay, and signature action-oriented combat that PlatinumGames Inc., are renowned for.

Talking about the decision to make a follow-up to the cult title, producer Yosuke Saito commented: “NIER struck a chord with many passionate gamers. It was something so special that we felt compelled to heed the fans’ call for a follow-up,” said Saito. “To create the ultimate action-RPG, it dawned on me that a collaboration between PlatinumGames and Square enix would be a dream come true.”

This weekend at Comic-con International in San Diego, Activision and developer PlatinumGames Inc. released a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming third-person action-brawler, Transformers: Devastation.

Blasting off with a showdown between cosmic rivals, this new in-game footage puts the heavy metal clash of the heroic Autobots and insidious Decepticons front and centre with explosive cel-shaded detail.

Transformers: Devastation brings Hasbro’s converting robot titans to life with classic Generations styling and modern attitude. This new trailer highlights four of the five playable heroes in the game; Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe and Wheeljack as well as notorious foes like Megatron, Starscream and the towering combiner, Devastator.

Whether leaping into vehicle form to ram enemies at high speed or juggling them in mid-air with a flurry of blinding-fast combos, the dynamic action of Transformers: Devastation is so close it’s personal.

Transformers: Devastation is expected to launch later this year on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC via Steam.
