The Pokemon Company International will release the Mega Forces Tins on 28 August 2026, a three-tin set headlined by new alternate-art foil promos of Mega Dragonite ex, Mega Darkrai ex, and Mega Zeraora ex. Each tin carries one of the three Mega Evolution Pokemon ex on its exterior and ships with the matching promo card inside.

Every tin sells for $21.99 and includes one foil promo, four Pokemon TCG booster packs, and a code card for Pokemon TCG Live. The reveal landed on 11 June 2026, putting the tins roughly eleven weeks out from their late-August release.

What Comes In Each Mega Forces Tin

The three tins split across the trio of Mega Evolution Pokemon ex, with each box built around a single promo. A buyer picks the tin fronted by the Pokemon they want, and the matching foil card sits inside.

The promos carry artwork built around each Pokemon’s Mega Evolution: Mega Dragonite ex with its wings, Mega Darkrai ex with its gaze, and Mega Zeraora ex leaning on speed. All three are positioned as some of the heaviest-hitting Mega Evolution Pokemon ex in the game, each with attacks built to deal large damage.

Where The Promo Artwork Stands

The alternate artwork for the three promos has not released in Japan yet, with one exception: Mega Darkrai ex has already surfaced in the Traditional Chinese release. The Japanese and English versions of the other two remain unseen outside the tin reveal.

Mega Dragonite ex may be the promo heading to Japan’s November Special Deck Set, alongside the Mega Gengar ex from the June tins. Mega Zeraora ex and Mega Darkrai ex could instead surface in a future High Class Pack set, joined by the prerelease promos and the Mega Clefable ex promo from the June tins. No such set has been confirmed yet, so where these promos ultimately land in Japan stays open.

What The Community Is Saying

Early reaction across fan forums and Reddit has centred on the Mega Dragonite ex tin, with several collectors calling it the standout of the three. Some readers debated the promo’s pose, reading the outstretched arms as either a friendly gesture or a battle stance fitting a Mega Evolution. A few also raised the prospect of scalping pressure on the Mega Darkrai ex tin, given the demand Mega Darkrai cards have drawn.

How The Mega Forces Tins Fit 2026

The Mega Forces Tins continue the run of Mega Evolution-focused products across 2026, following the June tins that carried the Mega Gengar ex and Mega Clefable ex promos. The 28 August date slots them into the back half of the year’s Pokemon TCG calendar ahead of the November Special Deck Set.

With the artwork for two of the three promos still unseen outside the tins and no follow-up Japanese set confirmed, the next confirmed checkpoint is the 28 August retail launch, when all three Mega Forces Tins hit shelves at $21.99 each.

The Pokemon Center store buckled on 10 June 2026 within minutes of opening preorders for Mega Evolution: Pitch Black, locking shoppers out of the site for up to 45 minutes as queue systems and product pages collapsed under demand. The expansion releases on 17 July 2026, putting preorders 37 days ahead of street date and continuing the compressed window the previous Mega Evolution set, Chaos Rising, established earlier in the cycle.

The drop centred on the Pokemon Center-exclusive Elite Trainer Box, which carries an extra stamped promo card and two bonus packs on top of the standard configuration. Mega Darkrai EX and Mega Chandelure headline the chase card lineup for the 84-card expansion, and the Pokemon Center channel remains the only retailer selling the exclusive ETB variant.

What Is In the Mega Evolution Pitch Black Set

Pitch Black is the next entry in the Mega Evolution sub-series, carrying 84 mechanically unique cards and continuing the line of Mega Pokemon introduced in Pokemon Legends Z-A. The set leans into a dark, ghostly visual identity, with Mega Darkrai EX and Mega Chandelure standing out as the marquee chase cards. The 84-card footprint mirrors predecessor Chaos Rising rather than scaling up to a master-set release, keeping Pitch Black inside the small-set format the sub-series has settled into through its first year.

Mega Darkrai EX leads the chase list as the central pull for collectors building Mega-themed decks, while Mega Chandelure rounds out the headline lineup with a ghost-fire profile that fits the set’s gothic tone. Beyond those two anchors, the wider secret-rare list and the full alt-art roster have not been detailed publicly, leaving the long-tail collector picture for the format to clarify across the next five weeks before launch.

The Mega Evolution sub-series ties directly to Pokemon Legends Z-A, which reintroduced the Mega mechanic in the mainline video game line and seeded the visual designs the TCG line is now drawing from. Pitch Black continues the run of small-format expansions built around a tight chase pool rather than the larger sets that traditionally cap each block.

The Pokemon Center Exclusive Elite Trainer Box

The Pokemon Center-exclusive Pitch Black Elite Trainer Box is the standout product in the preorder drop. The box ships with 11 packs in total, two more than the standard Elite Trainer Box configuration, and carries two stamped promo cards instead of the single promo found in the wide-release version. The exclusive stamped promo is the differentiator pulling collectors to the Pokemon Center channel, with the wider retailer ETB carrying only the standard nine-pack contents and one promo.

Pokemon Center remains one of the few retail channels still listing current Pokemon TCG product at MSRP, with the secondary market routinely flipping in-demand sets at multiples of cover price within days of launch. The 11-pack configuration and two stamped promos make the Pokemon Center Pitch Black ETB the highest-value entry point for collectors and players chasing the Mega Darkrai EX and Mega Chandelure cards from sealed product, which has driven the disproportionate weight of demand toward the official store at the cost of the wider retailer pool.

Site Crashes Lock Out Buyers for Up to 45 Minutes

The Pokemon Center site fell over within minutes of the preorder window opening, with shoppers reporting white-screen errors, queue boots, and complete inability to load the page across both desktop and mobile. Buyers tracking the drop on the PokeBeach community thread described being dumped onto broken pages after sitting in queue for up to 45 minutes, with several reloading repeatedly across multiple devices to hold a slot. One shopper called it the scariest preorder window they had encountered in the 18 months since returning to the hobby.

Some did clear the queue successfully. One buyer reported securing two Elite Trainer Boxes after switching from phone to laptop midway through the wait, describing the device swap as the only route that kept their queue slot active. Others reported being booted entirely once their session expired, with no clear way back to the front of the line and the queue reopening at the back for anyone who tried to rejoin.

Reports of the crash patterns lined up across the thread, with users noting the page either failed to load at all or loaded into a white-screen state that returned a broken queue afterwards. The mix of full site outages and partial load failures pointed at the underlying infrastructure hitting limits across both the queue front-end and the product page back-end at the same time, rather than a single point of failure during the spike.

Preorder Timing Follows the Chaos Rising Pattern

The 37-day window between preorder launch and street date continues the abbreviated pattern that Chaos Rising established when it opened preorders 39 days ahead of its release. Both Mega Evolution sub-series sets have shipped on the same compressed schedule, with the preorder window sitting just over five weeks ahead of launch rather than the longer lead times the wider TCG line has run on in previous years.

The shorter window keeps the build-up tight and pushes retailers to clear allocations quickly, with Pokemon Center stock historically depleting within the first day of preorder cycles for headline sets. Third-party listings on Magic Madhouse and Walmart opened alongside the Pokemon Center drop, giving overflow demand a wider retailer pool to land in for the standard ETB and booster box configurations.

The Pokemon Center channel remains the only listing carrying the exclusive 11-pack stamped-promo ETB, with the third-party retailers selling only the wide-release nine-pack configuration. Buyers shut out of the official store during the queue collapse have no second route to the exclusive variant, which has pushed reload activity back to Pokemon Center across the hours that followed the initial drop.

What Comes Next for Pitch Black Buyers

Pokemon Center has not announced a restock window for the exclusive ETB, with stock levels after the first preorder day unclear as of the time of writing. The standard ETB remains available across the wider retailer pool for buyers shut out of the Pokemon Center queue, though stamped-promo collectors without an exclusive version locked in will be watching for any second wave from the official store before the 17 July release.

The Pitch Black expansion arrives in stores on 17 July 2026, with the standard ETB, the Pokemon Center exclusive ETB, booster boxes, and themed accessories all releasing on the same day. The next test for the supply pipeline comes with launch-day availability across both Pokemon Center and the wider retail network, and the 37-day preorder runway leaves The Pokemon Company just over five weeks to size up demand before the set hits shelves worldwide.

Pokémon Champions has officially launched on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 as a free-to-start download, giving players a dedicated competitive battling platform built around the same ruleset used in official Pokémon Video Game Championship events. Unlike traditional Pokémon RPGs, this one skips the story campaign entirely and drops you straight into team building, ranked battles, and seasonal progression.

A mobile version is also confirmed for a later date, and cross-platform play between Switch and mobile will be supported when it arrives. For now, the game is available exclusively through the Nintendo eShop.

What Pokémon Champions Actually Is

Pokémon Champions is not a mainline RPG. There is no overworld to explore, no gym leaders to challenge through a story, and no wild Pokémon to catch in tall grass. Instead, the game is entirely focused on competitive multiplayer battling, using the same Single Battle and Double Battle formats that feature in official Pokémon VGC tournaments.

The battle system uses familiar mechanics from previous Pokémon titles, including types, Abilities, moves, and stat tuning. Mega Evolution plays a significant role too, with transformations like Mega Dragonite, Mega Meganium, Mega Emboar, and Mega Feraligatr all available. Some of these Mega Evolutions carry brand new Abilities that were not present in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

New Mega Evolutions And Abilities

Several Mega-Evolved Pokémon debut with exclusive Abilities in Pokémon Champions. Mega Meganium gets Mega Sol, which allows it to use moves as though the weather were harsh sunlight, regardless of the actual battle conditions. Mega Emboar has Mold Breaker, letting its moves bypass the target’s Ability entirely. Mega Feraligatr introduces Dragonize, which converts Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves and boosts their power by 20%.

Players who befriended Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja, and Eternal Flower Floette during Pokémon Legends: Z-A can bring those Pokémon into Champions via Pokémon HOME to claim their respective Mega Stones (Chesnaughtite, Delphoxite, Greninjite, and Floettite) from the in-game mailbox.

Ranked Battles, Casual Modes, And Seasonal Battle Pass

Online ranked play is live from day one. Trainers compete against players worldwide and earn Season Points based on match performance. Casual Battles offer a lower-pressure alternative for testing new teams, while Private Battles let you challenge friends directly.

Season Points feed into a seasonal Battle Pass system. Both wins and losses contribute toward progression depending on how you perform, so you are not punished for taking on tough opponents. Cosmetic rewards, avatar customisation items, and progression bonuses unlock as you advance through each season’s pass. A Premium Battle Pass is also available, unlocking exclusive seasonal outfits and additional rewards. Certain Mega Stones can be earned through the Battle Pass or purchased with Victory Points in the shop.

How Team Building Works

Instead of catching Pokémon through exploration, Champions uses a recruitment system. You can trial a selection of Pokémon once per day before deciding whether to permanently recruit them using Victory Points. Those same points also let you adjust stats, modify Abilities, and change movesets for your permanent team members, removing the traditional grinding loop entirely.

Pokémon HOME compatibility expands your options further. Supported Pokémon from titles like Pokémon GO and Pokémon Legends: Z-A can be brought into Champions as visiting partners. Visiting Pokémon retain their training adjustments if returned through HOME in the same form. However, Pokémon obtained directly inside Champions cannot be sent back to HOME.

Pricing For The Starter Pack And Membership

While the base game is free to start, optional paid content is available for players who want more flexibility. The Starter Pack costs $6.99 and includes additional Pokémon box space along with faster training tools to help with early team experimentation.

Early Download Bonus And Launch Tournament

Players who log in before 31 August 2026 can claim a free Dragonite from the in-game mailbox. The stone may also appear in the shop or other areas of the game at a later date.

A launch tournament called the Warm-up Challenge is already running. It pits trainers against each other worldwide, with rewards based on performance. Entry remains open until 13 April at 01:59 UTC. Finishing three or more matches with at least one win or loss earns you a Gardevoir and 100 Quick Coupons after final rankings are posted.

Nintendo Switch 2 Visual Upgrade

Pokémon Champions supports both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 as a single download. Switch 2 owners can grab a free visual enhancement update that improves the game’s graphical presentation. The game runs in TV mode, tabletop mode, and handheld mode across both systems.

Competitive Scene Starts At Indianapolis

The first official VGC event to feature Pokémon Champions will be the 2026 Indianapolis Regional Championships, running from 29 May to 31 May. That tournament serves as a preview ahead of the 2026 North America International Championships, scheduled for 12 June through 14 June. With Champions now being the game used for official championship events going forward, the competitive ladder is essentially live practice for anyone with tournament ambitions.

Pokémon Champions now officially has a release date, and it’s arriving sooner than many expected.

The The Pokémon Company has confirmed that the new battle-focused title launches on April 8, 2026 for the Nintendo Switch, with support for Nintendo Switch 2 via a free upgrade patch. Alongside the date, we’ve also got a clearer look at how the game plays, plus some genuinely interesting new Mega Evolution abilities that could shake up competitive strategies.

Pokémon Champions Release Date And Platforms

Pokémon Champions will launch globally on April 8, 2026, bringing a battle-centric experience to Nintendo Switch players. A version optimised for Nintendo Switch 2 will also be available through a free update, offering improved visuals, though the exact upgrades haven’t been fully detailed yet.

The game is positioned as a free-to-play experience, meaning players can jump in without paying upfront. However, a Starter Pack bundle will be available on day one, offering optional extras like additional Pokémon storage, bonus music tracks, and other in-game perks for those who want a bit more.

A mobile version is also in development, and importantly, cross-platform play is confirmed. That means Switch players will be able to battle against mobile users, expanding the competitive pool significantly from day one.

Classic Battles With A Competitive Focus

At its core, Pokémon Champions sticks closely to traditional Pokémon battle mechanics. You’ll still be working with familiar systems like types, moves, and Abilities, which keeps things grounded for long-time players.

What sets it apart is its clear focus on battling as the main experience. Rather than a full RPG journey, this is built around competitive play, offering both Ranked Battles for players chasing the top and Casual Battles for those who just want to experiment or play more casually.

The game also connects with Pokémon HOME, allowing players to bring in select Pokémon from past games and even Pokémon GO. That opens the door for long-time fans to reuse their collections in a new competitive environment.

New Mega Evolution Abilities Introduced

One of the biggest surprises is how Mega Evolution is being handled. While the mechanic itself isn’t new, Pokémon Champions introduces entirely new abilities tied to Mega forms, something we haven’t seen before.

Several examples have already been confirmed, including Pokémon originally introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Mega Meganium – Mega Sol

Mega Meganium gains a new Ability called Mega Sol. This allows it to use its moves as if harsh sunlight is active, effectively boosting certain strategies without needing to set up weather conditions manually.

Mega Emboar – Mold Breaker

Mega Emboar comes with Mold Breaker, an Ability that lets its attacks ignore the opponent’s Ability entirely. That can be a major advantage in matchups where defensive or reactive abilities would normally disrupt damage output.

Mega Feraligatr – Dragonize

Mega Feraligatr introduces Dragonize, which converts Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves and boosts their power by 20 percent. This gives it access to a broader offensive toolkit while increasing its damage potential.

A Growing 2026 Pokémon Line-Up

Pokémon Champions joins what is shaping up to be a packed year for the franchise. Between recent releases, remasters like FireRed and LeafGreen returning, and new projects on the horizon, 2026 is clearly a major moment for Pokémon.

Within that line-up, Champions fills a specific niche. It leans into competitive battling, cross-platform play, and ongoing updates, rather than the traditional single-player adventure structure.

With its free-to-play model, integration with Pokémon HOME, and new twists on Mega Evolution, it looks designed to keep players engaged long-term rather than delivering a one-and-done experience.

What To Expect At Launch

When Pokémon Champions arrives on April 8, players can expect a mix of familiar mechanics and new competitive features. Ranked and Casual modes will be available from the start, along with access to Mega Evolutions and their newly introduced abilities.

The addition of cross-platform play and connectivity with Pokémon HOME suggests the game is aiming for a broad, connected player base right out of the gate.

If the balance holds up and the new abilities land well with players, Pokémon Champions could easily become a central hub for competitive Pokémon battles going forward.

Mewtwo was last widely available in standard raids back in July 2022. Its Shadow form did appear briefly over a weekend in March 2024, but many players have been waiting for a proper return ever since. For newer trainers, this will be the first realistic opportunity to add Mewtwo to their Pokédex.

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Dates And Locations

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 will take place across three in-person cities before culminating in a global event.

The schedule is as follows:

Tokyo, Odaiba area: May 29 to June 1

Chicago, Grant Park: June 5 to 7

Copenhagen, Fælledparken: June 12 to 14

The Tokyo venue will span Odaiba Seaside Park, Symbol Promenade Park, and Shiokaze Park, forming a large interconnected play area. Attendees can choose between morning sessions from 10:00am to 2:00pm or afternoon sessions from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, with a two-hour transition window in between.

Citywide gameplay will begin several days before each in-person event, allowing both locals and travelling trainers extra time to explore and complete event tasks.

While Mewtwo is featured in Tokyo’s artwork, it is widely expected to be available globally during GO Fest 2026, rather than locked to a single location.

Exclusive Legendary Birds For Each City

In addition to Mewtwo’s return, each host city will feature an exclusive Legendary Kanto Bird encounter:

Articuno in Tokyo

Zapdos in Chicago

Moltres in Copenhagen

These city-specific exclusives add another layer of incentive for in-person attendance. However, the broader focus of the event clearly centres on Mewtwo’s global comeback.

Mega Mewtwo And New Evolutions On The Horizon?

The timing of Mewtwo’s return has also reignited long-running speculation about Mega Evolutions.

Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y remain notably absent from Pokémon GO, despite many other Mega Evolutions already being introduced. With Mega Malamar and Mega Victreebel from Pokémon Legends: Z-A scheduled to arrive soon, fans are questioning whether GO Fest 2026 could finally be the moment Niantic rolls out Mega Mewtwo.

There has been no official confirmation yet, but the anniversary year context makes it feel like a natural opportunity.

Zeraora Hints Spark Mythical Debut Speculation

Beyond Mewtwo, Pokémon GO Fest 2026 branding has sparked speculation about the debut of the Mythical Pokémon Zeraora.

Observers have pointed to subtle blue lightning bolt motifs in the event’s logo, which align closely with Zeraora’s Electric typing and design themes. Zeraora recently received a new Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, adding further weight to the theory that it could make its Pokémon GO debut this year.

As with Mega Mewtwo, Niantic has not officially confirmed Zeraora’s arrival, but the hints have not gone unnoticed within the community.

A Major Milestone Year For Pokémon GO

This year represents a rare double celebration. Pokémon GO turns 10, while the Pokémon franchise itself celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Bringing back Mewtwo, arguably one of the most recognisable Legendary Pokémon ever created, feels like a deliberate move to anchor those celebrations in nostalgia while still pushing forward with new content.

More announcements are expected on Pokémon Day, February 27, when The Pokémon Company traditionally shares updates on upcoming games and expansions. With Generation 10 rumours circulating and Pokémon Legends: Z-A content already rolling out, GO Fest 2026 may only be part of a much bigger year for the franchise.

For now, though, one thing is certain. Mewtwo is finally coming back to Pokémon GO, and for many trainers, that alone is reason enough to start preparing raid teams for the summer.
