The Spectre range of HP’s laptops has always been a favourite of mine.

Slim, elite in presentation and sized just right.

But I get that they aren’t for everyone, you can get the same amount of spec at a lower cost with other models.

Now, however, HP has released their HP Spectre x360 – and a Spectre model at a modest price tag. A laptop / tablet hybrid with a 360 degree hinge, you can flip the laptop over and wield Windows on a touch screen.

At 14 inches with a FHD screen @ 1920 x 1080 resolution, the Spectre was surprisingly heavier than I expected. It doesn’t have the gold and black finishing that past models have had, it’s more, well… main stream looking.

Under the hood the specs are more than adequate.

A 1TB SSD coupled with 32GB RAM and Intel ultra 7 processor. But there’s no dedicated graphics card here, instead you get an onboard Intel ARC.

While having a beefier graphics card is a must for Triple AAA games, the ARC can hold it’s own, to a point.

The likes of Forza 7, God of War and Borderlands 3 played fine, although the Spectre x360 did heat up on Forza 7. To be fair, the HP Spectre x360 is not aimed to be for gaming.

If you’re a content creator, the HP Spectre x360 is a definite.

This particular model reviewed has both the memory capacity and processing power to render out even heavy weight videos and images.

And being that it is slim and smaller, you can do this on the go.

External ports are minimal, you’ll get a USB-A that is covered and USB-C. Battery wise the HP Spectre x360 is legendary.

Up to 6 hours of game time, and just with general day to day to use you’ll easily get over 12 hours from a full charge.

The HP Spectre x360 is a powerhouse. It’s good to go whenever you are, has the added bonus of tablet functionality and is ready to be creative as your ideas flow.

Microsoft are showing that they are a serious player in the hardware market with their releases of Surface laptops and tablets.

The newly released Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 is a near-to high end content creators dream.

Sure, it is a Windows based laptop, but the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is a laptop with a difference. The 14.4 inch PixelSense touch screen can unclip from the magnetic back and be slanted forward over the chiclet keyboard giving you use of the trackpad and of course moving the screen front and centre.

This second edition of the Surface Laptop Studio sees some very nice spec bumps from the previous model, and via the Microsoft website you can configure your specs to your liking, at a cost.

The review model STG Play received has a 1TB SSD (this is swappable), an impressive NVIDIA RTX 4060 graphics card and a whopping 64GB of RAM.

You have side ports, that being two USB-C and a single USB-A. The charger is the Microsoft Surface universal magnetic cable with quick release.

To process all of your digital goodness is the latest Intel i7 13th Gen. For day to day tasks the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is lightning fast. But I highly doubt you will ever buy one of these for mundane things like spreadsheets, word processing and emailing… the Surface Laptop Studio 2 has got some growl under the hood and ready to go for high end graphics rendering and gaming.

The LED backlit LCD screen has a 120Hz refresh rate and has a total resolution of 2400 x 1600 (200 PPI). Not bad, but also not 4K. And no OLED, which given the price tag is a little bit head scratching.

Nonetheless it does have the inner specs to handle almost anything you throw at at it.

Given that the screen can be moved forward and tilted make the Surface Laptop Studio 2 the perfect device for digital creation. Whether you’re a graphic designer, professional photographer or similar, having that movable screen transforms this laptop in to something like a Wacom tablet.

And if you’re going to down tools and get your game on, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 has got you sorted there too.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 has 8GB on-board RAM and beefy enough to be handle high-end PC games.

Borderlands 3 ran superbly with no compromise to the game’s inner graphic settings. Forza Motorsport also purred along nicely with the heavier resource chomper, Alan Wake II being the last game tested, and while this also ran well, it was on Alan Wake II that the laptop tended to heat up a bit.

If you’re going to cloud game your Xbox library, there’s no issue here whatsoever, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 has way more specs than you need for that.

One core missing piece with the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is a stylus.

While having a screen that can unclip and move forward is great – not having an included stylus in the box is questionable. Sure you can get one, it’s called the Surface Pen and is sold separately, but if you’re in the market for one of these and have the budget for it, as well as given the price point, I feel that it should be absolutely included.

Battery life is damn good. You can expect around 18 hours of consistent use for ‘everyday’ use. Everyday use excludes high end content creation and gaming.

The likes of Forza and Alan Wake II were heavy hitters on battery consumption, seeing the Surface Laptop Studio 2 take a 40% hit from a full charge after a couple of hours of play.

Rendering out a 30 minute 4K videos was not only real quick, it didn’t hit the battery too badly, shaving only 7% from a full charge.

But with all of this super power, highly spec’d goodness we get to the price tag. This specific model reviewed will not see you get any change from $6.5K (NZD).

Yep the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is a super pricey investment.

You could weigh it up that it is future proofed, and it is, taking this review model in mind, the inner config is going to see you right for years to come, but I still can’t help feeling that it is over priced.

The Surface Laptop Studio 2 has packed on some pounds too. Weighing in to the ring at 2KGs which almost offsets the size of the laptop and it’s portability.

If, like me, you tend to use a laptop like a desktop, then weight is a no-issue.

Overall, I have much love for the Surface Laptop Studio 2. It’s unique, intuitive and excellently designed while being a powerhouse when it comes to work or play. Just be prepared to pay the big dollars to own one of these.

If you’re a serious PC gamer you’ve no doubt heard of the Predator that’s ready to do battle, just as you are.

Acer’s gaming laptop Predator series is one in the top echelons of pro gamer gear.

So when a non Predator gaming laptop is released by Acer, you can bet it’s got what it takes to be a worthy weapon on the gaming device market.

Introducing the new Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop, built for serious game time without the hefty price tag.

When you first get the box, it understates just what is inside.

Sure accessories are minimal, there’s the laptop, charger and a keyboard cover, but one look over the Acer Nitro 5 you’ll see from its markings you have something that means business.

Under the hood you’ve got a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 dedicated graphics card, 16GB DDR4 RAM with 12th Gen i7 Intel processors crunching data @ 2.7 GHz or turbo mode  @ 4.5 GHz.

The 512GB SSD was a little disappointing. Given that Windows 11 chomps some of that up and there’s a recovery partition already set, you’ll need to invest in an external drive if your PC games library has more than a couple of Triple AAA titles.

The chiclet keyboard has your playing keys already accented and the red backlighting is a nice touch.

Audio wise the Acer Nitro 5 actually sounds real good via the laptop speakers. Better than most gaming laptops I’ve tried, but using compatible headphones will give you 7.1 surround.

Acer haven’t skimped on ports either. You’ve got a 3.5 mm headphone / mic port, a generous array of three USB-A ports on the sides, LAN socket, USB-C and HDMI at the back with a proprietary mains plug. No Display Adaptor port though.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 graphics card never skipped a beat through my run through of some heavy weight games.

And if you’re a content creator, the Acer Nitro 5 is multipurpose for you.  Being able to render out 4K video and high resolution graphics in no time.

Most PC gamers that I know who have a gaming laptop use it like a desktop with the added benefit of being able to fold it and take it to a mates house every now and then.

On a desk you’ll be fine, if you prefer to actually place the laptop on your lap be prepared for some heat.

A couple of games got the Acer Nitro 5 a bit warm, God of War, Ratchet and Clank to name a couple.

While the Acer Nitro 5 does have some very impressive vents at the back there was still enough warmth on a few games for me to think I should probably use this on a desk.

The 15.6 inch Screen has larger than expected bezels top, bottom and sides.

However the quality of the visuals is high and you’ll get a refresh rate of 144 Hz with up to 1920 x 1080 resolution and 16:9 ratio.

Battery life was pleasing. Even on the larger games the Acer Nitro 5 was able to keep up the pace for around 5 hours.

If you use this laptop for other life stuff as well as gaming, you’ll be sweet for hours on a full charge.

In all the Acer Nitro 5 gives you boom for your dollars without you needing to spend an other worldly sum to keep up with the other serious PC gamers and esports contenders out there.

With a super sleek look on the outside and grunt on the inside, the Acer Nitro 5 has got what it takes for you to be gaming like a pro this holiday season and beyond.
