Former G2 stars Nikola “NiKo” Kovač and Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov came back to haunt their old squad, powering Team Falcons past G2 Esports in a statement 2–0 win at the Esports World Cup 2025.

The Round of 16 clash ended with Falcons taking Ancient 13–9 and Train 13–7, knocking G2 out of the tournament and sending the Saudi-backed side into the quarterfinals. For Falcons, it was also a much-needed bounce back after their 9–12th finish at IEM Cologne.

And while the win was a team effort, it was NiKo and m0NESY, both previously cornerstones of G2, who stole the spotlight. NiKo looked back to his best with 40 kills and 96 ADR, while m0NESY chipped in with 33 frags and 92 ADR.

“It was a very hard game mentally, and I’m really proud of the boys,” NiKo said after the win. “We lost some stupid rounds but had good protocols the whole way through. There were nerves, but I’m just happy with how we handled everything.”

Same Old Falcons, but Effective

Falcons’ win will come as a relief, but if anyone expected a new, calmer look from them, they’d have been mistaken. The series was messy at times, full of scrappy force buys, lost advantages, and chaotic 2v4s and 3v5s.

That brawly style works when individuals like NiKo and m0NESY are firing, but Maxim “kyousuke” Lukin had a quieter showing this time, leaving the heavy lifting to his teammates.

G2’s Problems Continue

For G2, the defeat was made worse by the struggles of Álvaro “SunPayus” García. The Spanish AWPer has had trouble adjusting to CS2, and Ancient was another low point with a 0.41 rating. Across his first 10 LAN maps, he sits at just 0.82, well below expectations when he was signed from HEROIC.

That weakness leaves a promising G2 roster on shaky ground, especially with the upset-heavy nature of this year’s EWC. With NAVI dumped out by 3DMAX and HEROIC eliminating Team Spirit, the stage was set for G2 to make a run, but instead they’re going home early.

What’s Next for Falcons?

The win books Falcons a quarterfinal showdown with either Virtus.pro or IEM Cologne champions MOUZ.

On top of tournament progress, Falcons also picked up 200 points in the EWC Club Championship race, stretching their lead over Team Liquid to 700. The result mathematically ends Team Vitality’s hopes in the competition, and depending on how Street Fighter 6 pans out, Falcons could even secure the Club Championship crown today.

For now, though, it’s about CS2 glory. NiKo looks revitalised, m0NESY is back in form, and Falcons are dangerous again, even if they’re still living on the edge of chaos.

In his place? Alimzhan “Alkaren” Bitimbai, the sharp Kazakh AWPer from Spirit Academy, joining on loan with an option to sign permanently if all goes well.

The sudden change comes after mixed results across two events. HEROIC struggled early at FISSURE Playground 1, suffering losses to BIG and BetBoom, and although they found some success at IEM Cologne’s Play-In stage by beating MIBR and Virtus.pro, they were quickly sent packing in the next round.

gr1ks had a rough run overall, putting up a 0.95 rating at FPG and dipping to 0.79 in the second stage of Cologne. There were flashes of promise, he did hit a 1.19 during Stage 1 in Germany, but consistency seemed to be missing.

In a public statement, HEROIC were pretty open about the change. They also gave gr1ks credit for his short time on the team, thanking him for his contribution both in and out of the server.

Enter Alkaren

Alkaren isn’t exactly a household name yet, but he’s been making serious noise in the tier-2 scene. Since joining Spirit Academy in May 2024, the 19-year-old sniper has maintained a 1.10 average rating and picked up wins at both LanDaLan 2025 and its sequel event.

Unfortunately, due to BLAST roster lock rules, Alkaren won’t be able to suit up just yet. HEROIC’s academy AWPer Rasmus “Scr0b” Poulsen will stand in for their next match at BLAST Bounty Season 2 – a Round-of-32 clash against Complexity on August 8th.

But all eyes are on the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, where Alkaren is expected to make his proper debut in HEROIC colours. It’ll be his biggest stage yet, and the perfect chance to prove he belongs at the top level.

The 17-year-old Russian prodigy, who was reportedly bought for a jaw-dropping $2 million USD (unconfirmed), made his Tier 1 LAN debut with Team Falcons and left a serious mark, even if his team couldn’t make it out of the group stage.

Who is Kyousuke?

If you haven’t heard of him before Cologne, you’re not alone. Until recently, kyousuke was grinding it out on Team Spirit Academy, quietly building a name for himself in the CS2 scene. He averaged a 1.29 HLTV rating in 2024 and caught the attention of top-tier players, seven of the HLTV Top 20 from last year picked him as their “bold prediction” for 2025, including ZywOo and now-teammate m0NESY.

Falcons took the gamble, benching legend Magisk to bring in kyousuke. And while the org hasn’t confirmed the numbers, multiple reports say they splashed around $2 million USD to sign him, making him one of the most expensive academy-to-pro transitions in CS history.

Holding His Own on LAN

Kyousuke entered Cologne with massive expectations, and despite his team faltering, he showed he’s got the nerves, and the skill, to hang with the best.

Those are serious numbers for a player fresh out of academy leagues.

It’s clear kyousuke was consistently Falcons’ top performer. Against FURIA, he delivered one of the biggest highlights of the tournament, a clean ace, taking down all five players in a single round. It was the kind of play that makes you sit up straight.

The Team Around Him Didn’t Deliver

Unfortunately, individual brilliance couldn’t carry Falcons out of the group stage.

• NiKo had one of the worst events of his career
• m0NESY struggled to find rhythm post-break
• Other teammates simply didn’t step up

To be fair, this is a squad still adjusting after major reshuffles. NiKo, for instance, now finds himself with fewer openings as kyousuke commands more of the fragging spotlight.

Still, for a team with grand finals finishes earlier this year and a reputation for shaking up rosters, it was a rough start to the second half of the season.

What’s Next?

Despite the group stage elimination, there’s still plenty of optimism surrounding Falcons, largely thanks to kyousuke. If anything, Cologne served as proof that he’s the real deal. As one post-event analysis put it, “Kyousuke showed that he absolutely doesn’t care who he plays against.”

Falcons now set their sights on Esports World Cup 2025, kicking off August 20. With a few weeks to regroup and a rising star on their hands, there’s still hope they can live up to the hype.

With this win, Spirit have now completed the legendary CS trifecta: IEM Cologne, IEM Katowice, and a Major title. That puts them in elite company and they’re showing no signs of slowing down.

Map 1, Mirage – MOUZ’s Pick

The series started off on Mirage, and Spirit wasted no time taking control. Their CT side was rock solid, stacking up round after round to take a commanding 10 – 2 lead by halftime. MOUZ looked flat. Thankfully, they won the second pistol round, seeding in the hope of a potential comeback. However, any chance of a comeback was put to an end as they struggled to convert even when they found openings. The map was secured by Spirit with a 13-7 scoreline.

Map 2, Ancient – Spirit’s Pick

Things didn’t get any better for MOUZ on Ancient. Despite putting up a fight and even taking the lead of 8 – 4 into the second half, they couldn’t stop Spirit’s late-game surge. A string of confident rounds, highlighted by some clutch plays from donk and sh1ro, turned the map on its head. Spirit snatched victory 13-11 and were now one map away from the title.

Map 3, Nuke – MOUZ’s Pick

Map three, Nuke, was MOUZ’s last hope, and for a brief moment, it looked like they might bounce back. They won the pistol round and the early few, but Spirit quickly shut down any momentum. Once they got rolling, their mid-to-late round decisions outclassed MOUZ entirely. Even when losing opening picks, Spirit turned situations in their favour through sheer coordination and killer instinct.

Map 4 and Map 5? None

There was no need for a fourth or fifth map in this series, Spirit made sure of that. By taking Mirage with confident execution and pulling off a gutsy comeback on Ancient, they closed the best-of-five semifinal in just three maps. MOUZ, despite moments of brilliance and early leads, couldn’t force a fourth map, let alone push the series the distance. Spirit’s dominant showing didn’t just end the series early, it sent a clear message to any would-be challengers: they’re here to win, and they’re not wasting time.

It’s hard to talk about Team Spirit without mentioning Danil “donk” Kryshkovets. The young Russian phenom continues to impress, and this tournament was no different.

From multi-kills to clutch plays, donk was at the heart of Spirit’s success and fully deserved the MVP title. At this point, he’s not just a rising star, he’s firmly one of the best CS2 players in the world.

A Bright Future for Spirit

This was also the debut IEM trophy for 17-year-old newcomer Ivan “zweih” Gogin, who slotted into the squad with calm confidence. While not always flashy, his impact was felt — especially when he pulled off a crucial 1v1 clutch to help close out the final map. MOUZ Falter at the Final Hurdle

MOUZ had an incredible run leading up to the final, including an upset win over Team Vitality in the semis, but their issues on T side came back to haunt them. Across the three maps, they failed to find consistency when it mattered most. If they’re going to challenge top-tier teams like Spirit in the future, they’ll need to patch up their mid-round calls and adapt under pressure.

Map one, Mirage, started out rough for MOUZ. Down 4-8 at one point, it looked like yet another Vitality steamroll was incoming. But something clicked. MOUZ pulled off a crucial pistol round on the B site and ran away with the half from there. Despite some heroic plays from ropz early on, including a 1v3 clutch, Vitality couldn’t stop the slide. They managed just a single round in the second half, eventually falling 13-9.

ZywOo, usually a titan in these moments, ended the map 8-19 with a 0.53 rating, his worst single-map performance since 2022.

MAP 2, Train – Vitality’s Pick

Historically, dropping a map never fazed Vitality. They’ve often lost the opener in a series, only to come back stronger on their pick. But this time was different. Train started out with a promising pistol round for Vitality, but MOUZ fired right back. The first half was tight, 7-5 to Vitality, but the second half was all MOUZ. Clean executes, punishing retakes, and a disjointed Vitality defence led to a 13-8 finish, and a 2-0 series win.

The loss puts an end to Vitality’s incredible streak, and for the first time since IEM Katowice earlier this year, they won’t be in the final. Instead, MOUZ will face Team Spirit for one of the most prestigious titles in Counter-Strike.

The semi-final clash was anything but straightforward, with both teams trading heavy blows across three maps. While NAVI looked sharp early on Mirage and dominated Nuke, Spirit bounced back in a big way on Ancient to shut the door on any comeback hopes.

If there was ever any doubt about who’s leading the charge for Spirit in 2025, Danil “donk” Kryshkovets erased it. He was in red-hot form once again, notching up 58 kills across the series and topping the scoreboard with a 1.42 rating and 101 ADR. Spirit’s pick of Nuke didn’t quite pan out. NAVI’s CT side looked locked in, especially with makazze and w0nderful combining for multi-kills and site anchors. The Russian side only managed two rounds on the attack and, despite showing signs of life late in the second half, were unable to recover from the early hole. NAVI closed it out 13–9, with makazze clutching a pivotal 2v4 late to seal the deal.

That loss must’ve lit a fire under Spirit, because they came out absolutely flying on Ancient. Their T side blitzed NAVI with clean executes and mid control, building a 10–0 lead before NAVI could respond. b1t tried to turn things around with a big 1v1 clutch and strong site defence, but the damage had been done. Spirit wrapped things up 13–6 to claim the series.

The Brazilians came out strong when the contest began on Train, FURIA’s selection. With crucial early-round kills from molodoy and YEKINDAR, their aggressive strategy took MOUZ by surprise. MOUZ, however, remained composed. Later on, torzsi came through with two huge clutches in overtime that turned the tide of the match.

FURIA struck back hard at Mirage, down a map but far from out. The Brazilians dominated the pace as FalleN called quick mid-round changes and KSCERATO tore through MOUZ’s defense. By obtaining important choices to maintain the pressure, molodoy once again demonstrated why he is FURIA’s rising star.

This time, there was no miracle comeback — FURIA closed it out 13–10 and forced a decider.

Map 3 Mirage – Decider Map

Inferno was always going to be close, and it did not let us down. FURIA appeared to be turning the corner after winning the first half 7 – 5. However, MOUZ settled in after the move. torzsi and Spinx worked together for a number of crucial rounds, including clutch plays that left the Brazilians reeling.

The final score: 13 – 11 MOUZ. Series won. Semi-final secured.

Stars of the Show

torzsi was without a doubt MOUZ’s difference-maker. His AWP was lethal, especially on Train and Inferno, and his 63–39 K/D statline speaks volumes. His smart, confident play under pressure turned close rounds into round wins — and round wins into map wins.

On the FURIA side, molodoy shone brightest. The young rifler dropped a massive 68 kills across three maps and earned MVP recognition from fans despite the loss. His ability to open rounds and keep FURIA in the game is a big reason they got this far.

What’s Next?

MOUZ now look ahead to a blockbuster semi-final against Vitality on August 2. It’ll be a massive test — but if they can keep their cool and play with the same discipline they showed today, they’ve got a real shot at the final.

In front of a roaring Cologne crowd, NAVI have booked their ticket to the semifinals of IEM Cologne 2025 after grinding out a 2-0 win over The MongolZ. It wasn’t an easy road, especially not on Inferno, but NAVI held strong when it mattered, setting up a spicy clash with Team Spirit.

Map 1 Inferno – NAVI’s Pick

The best-of-three kicked off with Inferno, a map that quickly turned into a rollercoaster. NAVI jumped ahead early but lost grip as The MongolZ stormed to a 10-4 lead. It looked like curtains, but Aleksib’s squad clawed their way back with grit and clutch plays, forcing overtime, and then two more. Eventually, NAVI locked in a 22-18 win.

Map 2 Ancient – The MongolZ’s Pick

Map two on Ancient told a different story. NAVI showed total dominance, winning 11 rounds on their CT side before winning 13 – 6. Following the punishing defeat on Inferno, the MongolZ appeared flat, and NAVI quickly took advantage of the situation.

NAVI’s Insane Newcomer

Newcomer Drin “makazze” Shaqiri, who made his LAN stage debut for NAVI, was a star in the series. After a rocky start, the youthful rifler quickly warmed up on the CT side and achieved an incredible 1.64 rating on Ancient. In the black and yellow shirt, it was a phenomenal moment.

With the victory, NAVI advances to the semifinals, but Team Spirit, one of the most popular teams in CS2 at the moment, stands in their path. Spirit has already defeated NAVI several times this season, and Aleksib and company will have their hands full with players like donk playing at their best.

But this is Cologne, and NAVI are beginning to peak at just the right time. The makazze gamble is paying off, the system is clicking, and the crowd is firmly in their corner. If they can take down Spirit, they won’t just be finalists, they’ll be genuine title contenders.

Six teams, including all four of the top teams in the globe, have advanced to the bracket round of IEM Cologne’s playoffs at the LANXESS Arena competing for the ultimate shares of the $1,000,000 prize pool.

Qualified Teams and Brackets

Six teams begin their Playoffs journey on Friday, August 1st:

• Team Vitality 
• Team Spirit 
• The MongolZ 
• MOUZ
• FURIA 
• Natus Vincere (NAVI) 

Team Spirit and Team Vitality both finished first in their groups, which automatically qualified them for the semifinals.

The IEM Cologne Playoffs quarterfinals will feature matches between MOUZ, FURIA, The MongolZ, and NAVI. These games are set for August 1st and will be played on the stage in Cologne. You lose? You’re eliminated right away.

On August 2nd, the winners of MOUZ vs. FURIA and MongolZ vs. NAVI will match against Team Vitality and Team Spirit in the semifinals.

The Grand Final of IEM Cologne is scheduled for Monday, August 3.

Key Players in the Group Stage

The IEM Cologne 2025 Group Stage saw several incredible individual performances that influenced the playoff picture in addition to some memorable games.

Donk, Spirit’s teenage prodigy, was without a doubt the highlight. Donk maintains his position as the year’s most dominant rifler with a 1.52 rating on seven maps. His steady play and strong entry were crucial in helping Team Spirit advance through a challenging Group Stage bracket.

Interestingly, Kyousuke managed to shine with a 1.39 rating even though Team Falcons had to retire early. Despite the team’s defeat by FURIA and The MongolZ, his performance, particularly during high-pressure situations, attracted attention.

With a 1.32 rating, iM from NAVI was another standout performer, demonstrating the Romanian star’s comeback to form following a relatively rocky first half of the year. iM was one of the tournament’s most valued assets because of his mid-round influence and clutch ability.

Also making waves for Team Spirit was sh1ro, matching iM’s 1.32 rating. His synergy with donk has become the backbone of Team Spirit’s late-round dominance and has many speculating if this could be their tournament to lose.

Team Vitality, already one of the most cohesive lineups this year, showcased their firepower and depth with four of their players making the top ratings list:

• ZywOo: 1.31 rating (6 maps)
• mezii: 1.24 rating (6 maps)
• flameZ: 1.22 rating (6 maps)
• ropz: 1.21 rating (6 maps)

With four players from Vitality on this list, their teamplay and balance between structure and firepower are clearly paying off. As we head into playoffs, all eyes will be on whether these stars can maintain this level, or if a dark horse will rise.

Faze and Falcons?

Team Falcons and FaZe Clan were unable to guarantee a position in the IEM Cologne 2025 Playoffs.

After losing to The MongolZ 2-0 in the Upper Bracket, Team Falcons’ run came to an end. After Team Spirit Academy acquired talented youngster Kyousuke, expectations were high. The rest of the team struggled, but Kyousuke, the second-highest ranked player in the Group Stage, gave an outstanding performance.

Meanwhile, FaZe Clan failed to live up to the hype. Their tournament journey was cut short by two significant losses against NAVI, first in the Group B Upper Bracket Quarterfinals and then in the Group B Lower Bracket Final.

What to Expect…

Will Vitality Retain Their Throne?
Vitality are heavy favourites, betting odds put them in prime position to win it all. But back-to-back overtime threats like FURIA could test their resolve in the semifinals.

Spirit vs The MongolZ
Donk and Spirit have the form to go toe-to-toe with MongolZ, making their semifinal clash one of the most anticipated matches. We see it going to a decider, with Spirit edging out 2‑1 if their momentum holds.

Underdog Stories?
FURIA and MongolZ both defied expectations in group play, but now face veterans like Vitality and NAVI. FURIA’s fate could rest on molodoy’s AWPing; MongolZ must sustain their drive to reach deep.

Alas, we’re expecting a Team Vitality vs Team Spirit Grand Final on August 3. Vitality’s flawless consistency and Spirit’s explosive rise make this the most compelling finale storyline. We see Vitality winning 3‑1, but a tight final is absolutely possible.
