<p style="font-weight: 400;">OPPO do it again.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">A beautifully accented device that looks high end – without the high price tag.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">In a similar but lower spec vein as with their <a href="https://www.shanethegamer.com/oppo-ax5-review/">AX5</a> the China based Android phone manufacturer has recently released the <em>AX5S</em>.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Design wise, the matte finish with gold bordering makes the <em>AX5s </em>something to covet.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">A smartphone for the masses, for those that want the look but do not need the bells and whistles and super-computing.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-38004" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/OPPO-AX5s-back-black-rgb.jpg?x59030" alt="OPPO AX5s" width="1280" height="1447" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/OPPO-AX5s-back-black-rgb.jpg 1280w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/OPPO-AX5s-back-black-rgb-265x300.jpg 265w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/OPPO-AX5s-back-black-rgb-768x868.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/OPPO-AX5s-back-black-rgb-906x1024.jpg 906w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The <em>AX5s</em> will not win any speed races or allow you to play high end mobile games – but what it does do, it does exceedingly well.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Having a 64GB inbuilt storage (ROM) coupled with expand-ability for a microSD card (up to 256GB) and Dual Sim functionality the 3GB RAM handles most things that a light to moderate user will throw at it.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Using the <em>AX5s</em> as an everyday device for just over a week I did not suffer any setbacks. I am a heavy smart phone user and generally, for personal I will always opt for the higher end, spec’d out models.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">I can have a multitude of Apps running at any given time and am hopeless at remembering to close them. The <em>AX5s</em> was able to run low to mid-sized games, certainly more than capable of playing any media and streaming and the only impacted experience that I had was when playing on an emulator (that I thought wouldn’t run – but did) and received a call at the same time. It was fair enough that the <em>AX5s</em> choked a wee bit trying to handle both tasks in one go.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-38003" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/OPPO-AX5s.jpg?x59030" alt="OPPO AX5s" width="1000" height="891" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/OPPO-AX5s.jpg 1000w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/OPPO-AX5s-300x267.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/OPPO-AX5s-768x684.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Built with a MTK MT6765 Processor, which is a dramatic change from the AX5&#8217;s Qualcomm Snapdragon 450, still it can absolutely handle more than one would expect and this processor is more in tune for performance without denting the battery level.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The fluidity of OPPO’s ColorOS 5.2 overlaid upon Android 8.1 (Oreo) is a UI (User Interface) dream. My favourite feature of OPPO’s OS is the Smart Bar. An on screen ‘edge’ like set of quick selects but more informative and productive than the ‘edge’ bar as we know it from other smartphone providers ever has been.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The <em>AX5s</em> has dual cameras at the rear, coming in at 13 + 2 MP and a standard 8MP at the front. Being that this is slated as a low range device at a price point for everyone, there are no overwhelmingly amazing shooting modes, but it does have a perfectly dedicated depth of field bokeh effect among a handful of other modes. The front camera again comes with a beauty filter, for those more superstar like selfies – this time round OPPO have enhanced this with A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) for as much accuracy as possible.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">And yes the gimmicky A.R. (Augmented Reality) stickers and modes are also included. For the more seriously minded the A.I. Smart Scan feature enables you to scan a business card into a phone contact or an image (with writing on it) in to text. Face unlock is also done by the front camera with 3D face scanning.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-37734" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-back-45-black-rgb.jpg?x59030" alt="OPPO AX5s" width="1920" height="2349" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-back-45-black-rgb.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-back-45-black-rgb-245x300.jpg 245w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-back-45-black-rgb-768x940.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-back-45-black-rgb-837x1024.jpg 837w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The 6.2 inch LCD HD+ screen retains a super slim bezel, top and sides with a waterdrop notch, giving a resolution of 1520 x 720 pixels. HD, but not FHD.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Coming in at under three hundred dollars (NZ) – the OPPO <em>AX5s</em> is not only a smart phone that your loose change can buy, it begs the question as to why other manufacturers offer a similar spec nearing the $1K NZD pricing (looking at you Apple and Samsung).</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Lastly, pairing itself to its slightly beefier sibling, the AX5, the <em>AX5s</em> comprises with a bigger than big battery for optimal performance and longevity.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The whopping 4230 mAH battery will keep you going for three to four days in light to moderate usage scenarios. I only charged it once in the time that I tested the <em>AX5s</em>, using it over eight and a half days, including traveling abroad in that time and taking a lot of pics at events that I was attending.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-37735" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-front-black-rgb.jpg?x59030" alt="OPPO AX5s" width="1920" height="2157" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-front-black-rgb.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-front-black-rgb-267x300.jpg 267w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-front-black-rgb-768x863.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/OPPO-AX5s-front-black-rgb-911x1024.jpg 911w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">That’s a lot of battery for your buck.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The <em>AX5s</em> is a superb low to mid all-rounder. It will see you right for a few days without screaming out to be charged (depending on use) and when priced comparatively with similar smart phone offerings, including a couple of the high end ones, it’s almost as if OPPO are selling themselves short.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;"><em>AX5s</em> is a major contender for one of the most cost effective and smartest device purchases this year.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"></p>

<p>Legendary drone manufacturers DJI and Intel have joined forces with Ryze Robotics to bring us the most sophisticated mini-drone available today.</p>
<p>The <em>Ryze Tello</em> is a tiny quad-copter that weighs in at only 80g and measures a svelte 175mm x 175mm. Despite it’s small size the drone is capable of capturing 5MP images and 720p video at 30fps. It also has a removable battery that gives the drone a very usable flight time of around ten minutes.</p>
<p>The <em>Tello’s</em> light weight puts it in the Australian Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA) sub-100g category, exempting it from all the usual regulations such as flying near airports etc. In the eyes of CASA, the Tello is just a toy. Whilst it is easy to fly and designed with young pilots in mind, it’s an amazing device that anyone can have fun with.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-31099" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_05.jpg?x59030" alt="" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_05.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_05-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_05-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_05-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_05-750x422.jpg 750w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>The stated range is 100m with a maximum altitude of 10m. Whilst I agree with the 10m, or thereabouts, height, I could only get a 25m range. The <em>Tello</em> is controlled via an Android or Apple mobile device running the <em>Tello</em> app. The mobile device is connected to the <em>Tello</em> via Wi-Fi, controlling the aircraft and displaying a direct video feed from the on-board camera.</p>
<p>The drone can be set up with either a Mode 1 or Mode 2 control scheme. The lack of Mode 3 is a little disappointing, but for a drone the only costs $170 AUD or $200 NZD, you really can’t complain. It’s a shame the kit doesn’t come with a proper controller as standard, but an optional Bluetooth controller is available for more precise maneuvering.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-31100" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_08.jpg?x59030" alt="" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_08.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_08-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_08-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_08-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_08-750x422.jpg 750w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>The <em>Tello</em> has two speed settings, with the slower speed aimed at beginners. After a bit of practice most pilots will want to switch to the faster speed, with the most adventurous also adjusting the maximum attitude angle for faster control responses.</p>
<p>Unlike it’s DJI cousins, the <em>Tello</em> doesn’t have GPS for position hold, instead the optical sensors underneath the drone gives it a rock-solid hover. The lightweight drone is perfect for flying indoors and outside on a calm day.</p>
<p>The drone is remarkably robust, able to withstand mild knocks and crashes without damage. The kit comes with some replacement propellers and a removal tool if it takes a big hit. The <em>Tello</em> is light enough that should something go wrong it’s not going to drop like a stone. Whilst the prop guards are removable, I’d recommend that they are left them on, especially for indoor flying.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-31101" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_09.jpg?x59030" alt="" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_09.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_09-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_09-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_09-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_09-750x422.jpg 750w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>The little device comes with some built-in flight modes selectable from the <em>Tello</em> app. With one button press you can launch the drone by gently throwing it, get it to record whilst flying away from you, fly in a circle whilst recording, record a video whilst spinning around or just have it bouncing up and down.</p>
<p>If you really want to show the <em>Tello’s</em> abilities of to your friends, the 8D Flips mode is the way to go. A swipe of your finger will have the drone flipping in the direction of your swipe, over the front, back, left, right and over all four diagonals. In the correct light, due to the precision of the optical sensors, it does all this without losing altitude or shifting position.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-31103" src="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_02.jpg?x59030" alt="" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_02.jpg 1920w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_02-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_02-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_02-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.shanethegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Tello_02-750x422.jpg 750w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>With the <em>Tello</em>, Ryze Robotics provide full support for STEM learning by making the drone programmable. With the aid of some extra downloadable libraries, the Tello can be controlled via the popular MIT-developed programming app Scratch 2. The easy to understand visual coding tool can be used to generate simple scripts for the <em>Tello</em>.</p>
<p>The <em>Ryze Tello</em> is a fun little drone, perfect for beginners or anyone wishing to fly a drone without the financial outlay of one of DJI’s more feature-packed machines. The sub-100g weight means you can fly it how you want and when you want without breaking Australian CASA regulations. The <em>Tello</em> is easy to fly, surprisingly nimble and packed with a pretty capable camera. Al in all the little drone offers outstanding value for money.</p>
