Team Vitality have won IEM Rio 2026 after a 3-0 demolition of Team Spirit in the grand final, and with it they have pulled off something no Counter-Strike roster has ever managed before. The French side are now the first team in history to win two ESL Grand Slams, and they have done it in back-to-back fashion, closing out Season 6 just months after wrapping up Season 5.

The win in Rio is Vitality’s fourth trophy of 2026 already, following IEM Katowice, IEM Kraków and BLAST Open Rotterdam earlier in the year. It also locks in a $1,000,000 bonus on top of the $295,000 first-place prize, handed out once a team collects four qualifying wins across the ESL Grand Slam cycle.

How The Grand Final Played Out

Spirit actually looked dangerous early on Mirage, opening up a 5-1 lead on the T side and sitting on an 11-8 advantage heading into the back end of the map. Vitality clawed it back, forced overtime, and that is when Robin “ropz” Kool took the game by the throat, stringing together multi-kills in four straight rounds to seal the opener.

Nuke followed a similar script. Spirit built an 8-4 lead on their CT side with Boris “magixx” Vorobiev and Myroslav “zont1x” Plakhotia carrying the fragging, but a disastrous run of pistol and anti-eco losses after the half completely collapsed their map. Vitality cruised the rest of the way to take it 13-10.

Dust2 was not really a contest. Vitality jumped to 5-0 on the CT side, only dropped one round after that outside of a late donk clutch, then nailed the second-half pistol with a clean A fake and closed the series out 13-5.

Danil “donk” Kryshkovets, tipped as the player most likely to swing a final of this size, only really showed up on the third map and finished with a 1.00 rating across the series. It was still the highest mark on Spirit, which tells you everything about how the rest of the squad performed.

The Numbers Behind The Sweep

Vitality’s top half of the server did most of the heavy lifting, with ropz and Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut posting 1.38 and 1.36 ratings respectively across the best-of-five. ZywOo was named MVP of the tournament, keeping up his usual standard of showing up in the moments that actually decide trophies.

Spirit’s Danil “donk” Kryshkovets ended the series with a 1.00 rating, and oddly enough that still made him his team’s best performer. apEX summed up his own side’s night fairly bluntly in the post-match interview, saying he was mad about the amount of rounds Vitality threw away even in a 3-0, and that he wants the team to be perfect every time they sit down.

The Road To A Second Grand Slam

This Grand Slam took Vitality eleven months to complete, starting all the way back at IEM Dallas in May 2025. Only three teams outside of Vitality managed to win an eligible event across the entire Season 6 cycle.

Season 6 Winners

IEM Dallas 2025: Vitality

IEM Cologne 2025: Spirit

ESL Pro League Season 22: Vitality

IEM Chengdu 2025: FURIA

IEM Kraków 2026: Vitality

ESL Pro League Season 23: Natus Vincere

IEM Rio 2026: Vitality

With four of those seven wins to their name, Vitality clear the four-trophy threshold that triggers the $1,000,000 Grand Slam bonus. They also become the only organisation ever to hold two of the things, after previously closing out Season 5 last year.

Every ESL Grand Slam Champion

Season 1 (2017-2018): Astralis

Season 2 (2019): Liquid

Season 3 (2019-2021): Natus Vincere

Season 4 (2021-2023): FaZe

Season 5 (2023-2025): Vitality

Season 6 (2025-2026): Vitality

ropz Sets His Own Individual Record

While the team record is the obvious story, ropz has quietly pulled off something of his own. The Estonian becomes the first player ever to win three ESL Grand Slams, having already taken one with FaZe in Season 4 before collecting Season 5 and Season 6 with Vitality. That puts him one clear of Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken, who won with Liquid in 2019 and FaZe in 2023.

apEX did not hold back on the historical framing afterwards either. “For me, a Grand Slam is harder to win than a Major,” he said. “There is no doubt that we are the best team in history.”

Runs From The Rest Of The Pack

Spirit reaching the grand final was still a bright spot in what has been an uneven 2026 for the Russian side, with deep runs at big events but not quite the results their roster strength suggests. They were dropped into the lower bracket early after losing to Falcons, then grinded back through Liquid, G2 and MOUZ to earn the final against Vitality.

Falcons themselves had the most Falcons tournament imaginable, beating both Spirit and Vitality in the group stage before losing to Spirit in the playoffs without much of a fight. That has reignited the rumours around another roster shake-up, with Finn “karrigan” Andersen’s name floated as a possible addition.

FURIA gave the home crowd exactly what they wanted in the group stage, knocking out NAVI and MOUZ on the way to the semifinals before running into Vitality. MOUZ snuck into the top six despite a brutal lead-up that saw them miss playoffs at both ESL Pro League Season 23 and BLAST Open Spring 2026. NAVI’s quarterfinal exit looked rough on paper but losing a best-of-three to this version of Vitality is about as honourable as defeats get right now.

What Comes Next For The Grand Slam

ESL’s Marc Winther, Director of Esports for Counter-Strike at the ESL FACEIT Group, confirmed after the final that a new Grand Slam cycle is starting immediately, with four eligible events running before the end of the year. That list includes the EPT Championship tournament attached to the IEM Cologne Major.

The short-term calendar does not give anyone much breathing room either. BLAST Rivals Spring 2026 runs from 29 April to 3 May, and the Cologne Major looms after that. If Vitality keep this level going, the next storyline writes itself: they could become the first team to win two Grand Slams inside the same calendar year, an achievement that did not look remotely plausible twelve months ago.

ESL has thrown down the gauntlet ahead of IEM Rio 2026, offering a $100,000 bonus to any team that can deny Vitality their second consecutive ESL Grand Slam. The world’s number one CS2 team needs just one more ESL Pro Tour title to complete the feat, and IEM Rio is the next opportunity on the calendar.

ESL’s “Giant Killer” Challenge

In a post on X ahead of IEM Rio’s opening day, ESL made no attempt to hide its excitement. The tournament organiser publicly begged the rest of the field to step up.

SOMEONE BEAT THEM AT #IEM RIO I’M BEGGING YOU.

Take down @TeamVitalityCS in an #ESLProTour Masters or Championship Grand Final and deny them their SECOND $1,000,000 #ESLGrandSlam…

We’ll give you $100,000 extra. pic.twitter.com/QSF7zUzh5e

— ESL Counter-Strike (@ESLCS) April 12, 2026

The bounty is not a general upset bonus. It only applies if Vitality reach the grand final of an ESL Pro Tour Masters or Championship event and are then beaten there. Winning a group stage match or knocking Vitality out in a quarter-final does not count. The reward is specifically designed for the team that stands between Vitality and the $1,000,000 Grand Slam prize at the very last hurdle.

No team in the history of the ESL Grand Slam has ever claimed the giant killer bonus. Every team that has reached the point of Grand Slam completion has gone on to finish the job, making the bounty more of a theoretical incentive than a proven reward. IEM Rio could change that.

One Win Away From History

Vitality secured their first ESL Grand Slam at IEM Melbourne in April 2025, capping a run that included victories at IEM Cologne 2024, IEM Katowice 2025, and ESL Pro League Season 21. Almost exactly one year later, they find themselves on the brink of doing it again. Wins at IEM Dallas 2025, ESL Pro League Season 22, and IEM Krakow 2026 have put Vitality just one title away from a second consecutive Grand Slam, something no organisation has achieved since the competition began in 2017.

The individual records on offer are equally significant. Robin “ropz” Kool would become the only player with three Grand Slam titles, having previously earned one with FaZe in 2023. Teammates ZywOo, apEX, mezii, and flameZ would each claim their second, joining Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken as the only other player with two.

Vitality Arrive in Unstoppable Form

The numbers behind Vitality’s current run speak for themselves. At BLAST Open Rotterdam in March, they went 11-0 in maps across five series, claiming their third consecutive trophy while barely being tested. Their opponents reached double-digit rounds on only four of those maps. Vitality now hold a 22-map win streak at Big Events, second only to Ninjas in Pyjamas’ all-time record of 34.

Both apEX and ropz have been open about where their focus lies. Speaking after Rotterdam, apEX described the event as “training for Rio, seeing what’s wrong,” adding that the team’s primary goal is to complete the Grand Slam as quickly as possible. Ropz echoed that mindset, noting that Rio and IEM Atlanta are the two opportunities before the IEM Cologne Major, but the aim is clear.

Vitality skipped PGL Bucharest entirely in the lead-up, giving themselves two full weeks of preparation. Their only blemish in 2026 so far has been a semi-final exit at BLAST Bounty Season 1 Finals. Every other event has ended with a trophy.

The IEM Rio Field and Key Absences

IEM Rio 2026 runs from April 13 to April 19 at Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, featuring 16 teams and a $1,000,000 total prize pool. The format uses double-elimination groups with all best-of-three matches, with three teams from each group advancing to a single-elimination playoff.

Vitality open against local side RED Canids in Group A, which also includes Team Spirit and Falcons. Group B features NAVI, MOUZ, G2, Liquid, and FURIA among others, giving the tournament plenty of depth across both halves of the bracket.

One notable absence looms over the event. G2’s Nemanja “huNter-” Kovac is set to miss IEM Rio due to injury, weakening one of the teams that might have posed a realistic threat deeper in the bracket. In a tournament where the central question is whether anyone can meet Vitality in the final and beat them, losing a key player from a potential contender matters.

The Bigger Picture Beyond Rio

Even if Vitality fall short in Rio, they will have another chance at IEM Atlanta just weeks later. But the team has made it clear they are not interested in waiting. Ropz spoke after IEM Krakow about the squad’s awareness that their window, however dominant, will not last forever. “At some point, when the team will come to an end in a year or two, whenever, we want to look back and have no regrets,” he said.

A Grand Slam at Rio would also build further momentum towards the IEM Cologne Major in June. A victory there would give Vitality their fourth Major title and third in a row, tying Astralis’ record. If Vitality manage to win Rio without dropping a map, their streak would reach 33, one series short of the all-time Big Event record held by Ninjas in Pyjamas. ApEX has been characteristically blunt about the team’s ambitions, saying in Rotterdam: “We want to be better than Astralis. We’ve said it a couple of times, so here we go.”

The result not only reinforces Vitality’s position as the top CS2 team right now, but also puts them just one tournament win away from completing another ESL Grand Slam run, something no team has managed back-to-back in the modern era.

Vitality Dominate NAVI In One-Sided Grand Final

Vitality’s 3-0 win over Natus Vincere came across Inferno, Anubis, and Dust2, with scorelines of 13-7, 13-10, and 13-10 respectively.

While the series looked close on paper at times, NAVI struggled to convert key moments. Multiple lost force-buy situations and missed clutch opportunities allowed Vitality to stay in control throughout the match.

Inferno set the tone early, with both teams trading rounds before Vitality pulled ahead late in the half and shut things down convincingly on defence. On Anubis, NAVI briefly found momentum through individual plays, including multi-kill rounds from Drin Shaqiri, but again failed to capitalise on crucial rounds.

Dust2 followed a similar pattern, highlighted by a standout Glock round from Robin Kool, who opened the map with an all-headshot 4K that set Vitality up for another controlled win.

A Flawless Tournament Run In Rotterdam

Coming into the event as favourites, Team Vitality delivered a near-perfect run at the Rotterdam Ahoy Arena.

They opened with a 2-0 win over 9z, followed by clean 2-0 victories against The MongolZ and PARIVISION in the group stage. That momentum carried into the playoffs, where they dispatched Aurora Gaming 2-0 before sweeping NAVI in the final.

Across the entire event, Vitality did not drop a single series, underlining just how far ahead they currently are in the CS2 competitive scene.

The win also extended their incredible streaks, with reports highlighting a 22-map win streak and 16 consecutive series victories heading into and through the final.

ropz Claims MVP With Standout Playoff Performance

Robin “ropz” Kool was named MVP of BLAST Open Rotterdam, earning the award for the first time since joining Vitality.

Interestingly, he was not the standout player during the early stages of the tournament, with Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut and Shahar “flameZ” Shushan leading performances in the group stage.

However, once playoffs began, ropz stepped up massively. He delivered multiple high-impact maps, finishing with a 1.54 rating in the arena and consistently turning key rounds in Vitality’s favour.

This marks his sixth career MVP medal and his first since 2023, further reinforcing his reputation as one of the most reliable big-stage performers in Counter-Strike.

Vitality Move One Step Closer To ESL Grand Slam

With victories now at IEM Kraków, PGL Cluj-Napoca, and BLAST Open Rotterdam, Vitality are closing in on another ESL Grand Slam title.

They now need just one more eligible tournament win to secure the $1 million prize and complete back-to-back Grand Slam runs, something that would further cement this roster’s place in Counter-Strike history.

The current lineup of Dan “apEX” Madesclaire, Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut, Robin “ropz” Kool, William “mezii” Merriman, and Shahar “flameZ” Shushan continues to deliver consistent results, with no signs of slowing down.

What Comes Next For Vitality

Vitality’s next challenge will be IEM Rio, scheduled from April 13 to April 19.

Given their current form, they will once again enter as clear favourites. Another title there would not only extend their dominance but also secure the ESL Grand Slam, adding even more weight to what is already shaping up to be one of the most dominant eras in Counter-Strike 2.

If this run continues, conversations around the greatest CS team of all time are only going to get louder.
