Valve is being sued by the New York Attorney General over loot boxes in Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2, with the state alleging the systems amount to illegal gambling.

In a 52-page civil filing submitted to the New York State Supreme Court, Attorney General Letitia James claims Valve’s loot box mechanics violate the state’s Constitution and Penal Law. The lawsuit argues that players, including minors, are being encouraged to spend money for a random chance at valuable virtual items, something the state says crosses the line into gambling.

What The New York Lawsuit Alleges

According to the Attorney General’s press release, the Office of the Attorney General found that Valve’s games “enable gambling by enticing users to pay for the chance to win a rare virtual item of significant monetary value.”

The filing specifically points to loot box systems in Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2. In Counter-Strike 2, players purchase keys, typically priced at US$2.49, to open cases that contain randomly determined cosmetic items such as weapon skins. The complaint directly compares the animated case-opening sequence to a slot machine, noting the spinning wheel that lands on a selected item.

The state argues that Valve intentionally makes certain items far rarer than others, increasing their perceived and real-world value. While most items are low value, rare skins can sell for thousands of dollars, and one Counter-Strike skin reportedly sold for more than US$1 million in 2024.

A Multi-Billion Dollar Skins Economy

The lawsuit also highlights the scale of the Counter-Strike skins market. In March 2025, reports indicated the market for Counter-Strike skins had surpassed US$4.3 billion, attracting not just players but also traders and speculators treating digital items as investment assets.

Through the Steam Community Market, users can sell skins for platform credit, which can then be used to purchase games, hardware or other digital items. The Attorney General’s office further claims Valve “facilitates and even assists” third-party marketplaces, where skins can be sold directly for real money.

This secondary market is central to the state’s argument. The filing claims players are effectively paying for a random chance at prizes that hold real monetary value, which New York law considers a defining element of gambling.

Focus On Minors And Addiction Concerns

Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement, “Illegal gambling can be harmful and lead to serious addiction problems, especially for our young people.”

The complaint alleges that Valve has “made billions of dollars” by allowing children and adults to gamble for valuable virtual prizes. It frames loot boxes as part of a broader pattern of addictive online systems targeting younger audiences. The Attorney General’s office has previously taken action against social media platforms and illegal online casinos, and now appears to be expanding that scrutiny to game monetisation models.

The state also references studies suggesting early exposure to gambling-like mechanics can increase the risk of addiction later in life. In its view, loot boxes represent what it calls a “quintessential gambling” model that is prohibited under New York law, outside of specific exceptions that it argues do not apply here.

What New York Is Asking The Court To Do

The lawsuit seeks wide-ranging remedies. Among them are:

Permanently blocking Valve from violating New York’s Constitution and Penal Law

Forcing Valve to account for money lost by New York consumers

Ordering full restitution and damages

Requiring Valve to disgorge profits earned from the alleged illegal practices

Imposing a fine of three times the amount of gains from the practice

Awarding costs and any other relief the court deems appropriate

In short, the Attorney General wants the loot box mechanics removed and financial penalties imposed if the court agrees they constitute illegal gambling.

As of publication, Valve has not issued a public response to the lawsuit.

The Broader Loot Box Debate

Loot boxes have sat in a legal grey area for more than a decade. Different countries have taken different approaches. China and South Korea require companies to disclose item drop rates. In Australia, loot boxes automatically result in an M rating, while simulated gambling elements can push a game to R18+, restricting sales to minors. Belgium has attempted to ban loot boxes entirely, though enforcement has proven complex.

For Valve and the wider industry, this New York lawsuit could become a pivotal case in the United States. If the court sides with the Attorney General, it may increase pressure on publishers to rethink or significantly alter loot box systems for the US market.

With billions of dollars tied up in cosmetic economies and live service monetisation, the outcome could shape how games like Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 operate for years to come.

BLAST has officially named EFM Global as its Official Global Logistics Partner, tasking the world-leading logistics specialist with managing the production and technical infrastructure behind more than 20 international esports events each year.

How EFM Global Supports BLAST’s Global Circuit

Under the agreement, EFM Global will play a central role in delivering BLAST’s world-class tournaments across multiple regions. That responsibility covers the movement and setup of critical production equipment, staging, and broadcast technology required to deliver a consistent Tier 1 esports experience worldwide.

Each BLAST event involves the transportation of up to 18 tonnes of air freight, alongside multi-container sea freight and international road transport. EFM will also oversee the movement of server farms, broadcast systems, staging structures, truss builds, LED architecture, and competition-grade technology kits that power both live audiences and global broadcasts.

The scale of this operation highlights just how demanding modern esports events have become, especially as BLAST continues to expand its international calendar.

Integration Across Broadcasts And Fan Experiences

Beyond logistics, the partnership includes full integration of the EFM Global brand across BLAST’s global ecosystem. This will include digital and physical logo placements during broadcasts, as well as branded content across BLAST’s social media channels.

BLAST has also confirmed plans to produce bespoke content highlighting EFM’s operational role, including an aftermovie that pulls back the curtain on what it takes to deliver Tier 1 esports events around the world. Branded daily segments are expected to appear across both social platforms and live broadcasts throughout the season.

Industry Leaders On Why Logistics Matter In Esports

James Brown, Commercial Director at BLAST, described the partnership as a key step in maintaining the organiser’s global standards.

“EFM is the gold standard in event logistics, and we’re thrilled to welcome them as our Official Global Logistics Partner for 2026 and beyond,” Brown said. “Their expertise helps us deliver unforgettable esports experiences for fans around the world. This partnership strengthens the operational backbone of what makes BLAST events truly world-class.”

EFM Global also pointed to the unique challenges that esports presents compared to traditional live events.

“What makes esports uniquely complex is the fusion of elite sport, broadcast television and touring production,” said Marcel Meyer, Global VP Events at EFM Global. “Teams arrive with high-performance support crews because the athletes perform at exceptional reflex thresholds. That competitive standard drives enormous technical expectations behind the scenes, and that is where EFM and BLAST thrive.”

A Packed 2026 Calendar Across Multiple Esports

BLAST’s 2026 calendar already includes a wide range of international destinations, with EFM’s first event as an official partner set to be a Counter-Strike tournament in Rotterdam. The season is already underway following the BLAST Bounty Winter 2026 finals in Malta, which ran from January 22 to 26 and delivered one of the circuit’s most-watched events so far.

Throughout the year, BLAST will continue producing competitions across multiple major titles, including Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Rocket League, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege X, and Brawl Stars. The organiser also works closely with leading publishers such as Valve, Epic Games, Supercell, and Ubisoft.

As BLAST continues to scale its global operations, the partnership with EFM Global underlines just how critical logistics have become in delivering seamless esports events at the highest level.

Chinese esports organisation Team Tidebound has officially announced its exit from the Dota 2 competitive scene, confirming the club will transition into an inactive state with immediate effect. The announcement was shared via Weibo on December 25, marking the end of the organisation’s short but impactful run in professional Dota 2.

A Difficult Decision for the Club

In its official statement, Team Tidebound said the decision followed extensive internal discussions by management and was made with deep regret. The organisation cited the current CN Dota talent environment and long term development considerations as key factors behind the move.

Despite being active for less than a year, the club emphasised that the decision was not taken lightly, describing it as a necessary step based on the realities of the regional competitive landscape and future prospects.

Strong Results in a Short Lifespan

Although brief, Team Tidebound’s competitive journey included several standout moments. The team quickly gained attention after debuting at the DreamLeague Season 25 China Open Qualifier, where it secured multiple qualifier victories and earned spots at international events such as PGL Wallachia Season 3 and ESL One Raleigh 2025.

Their biggest achievement came with a championship win at the Clavision Masters 2025 Snow Ruyi, followed by a runner up finish at the Asian Champions League 2025. The organisation also qualified for The International 2025 in Hamburg, advancing to the playoff stage before being eliminated by Nigma Galaxy.

Star Players and a Respected Roster

Team Tidebound’s lineup featured some of the most respected names in Chinese Dota 2, including The International 2016 and Riyadh Masters 2022 champion Zhang y` Yiping, alongside Zhang Faith_bian Ruida.

The club paid tribute to its players and coaching staff, thanking them for countless hours of training, travel, and competition, and acknowledging the role they played in the organisation’s most memorable moments.

Where the Players Are Heading Next

Following the announcement, most of Team Tidebound’s roster has already secured new opportunities ahead of the 2026 season. Support players y` and Lin “planet” Hao, as well as carry Guo “shiro” Xuanang, have joined Vici Gaming. Midlaner Cheng “NothingToSay” Jin Xiang has transferred to Xtreme Gaming.

Both Vici Gaming and Xtreme Gaming are set to return to competition at ESL Challenger China, scheduled to take place from January 30 to February 1. Offlaner Faith_bian has not yet announced his next destination.

Gratitude to Fans and Partners

In its farewell message, Team Tidebound also extended thanks to its fans, partners, and sponsors, crediting their support as a driving force during both highs and lows. While the organisation’s competitive banner has been lowered for now, the club stated its passion for esports remains unchanged.

Team Tidebound’s departure closes a short but memorable chapter in CN Dota, leaving behind a legacy of strong performances, respected players, and a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the modern esports landscape.

Esports prize pools hit a new high in 2025

Esports prize money reached new territory in 2025, with more than $270 million awarded across competitive gaming worldwide. According to data compiled by Esports Charts, the total prize pool grew by around 15.5 percent compared to 2024, driven by heavier investment from publishers, tournament organisers, and global events like the Esports World Cup.

The dataset spans more than 10,500 tournaments across over 100 esports titles, covering events that concluded in 2025, even if they began earlier. From long-standing PC esports to booming mobile scenes, the year delivered one of the most diverse and lucrative competitive calendars the industry has ever seen.

Counter-Strike leads the way in 2025

Counter-Strike was the biggest winner of the year, finishing as the highest-earning esports title by total prize money. More than $32.2 million was awarded across CS tournaments in 2025, a massive 41.5 percent increase year over year.

That growth was fuelled by an expanded top-tier calendar, including new PGL events and the debut of the BLAST Bounty series. The Chinese Counter-Strike scene also made a strong comeback, highlighted by major events such as the Asian Champions League, CS Asia Championships 2025, and IEM Chengdu.

CS2 also dominated at the team level. Team Vitality stood out as one of the year’s top earners, collecting roughly $4 million in prize money while lifting trophies at several S-Tier events, including a Major victory in Budapest.

Dota 2 slips to second, but remains a giant

Dota 2 finished second in the 2025 rankings, with total prize money sitting at approximately $23.1 million. While that figure was largely unchanged from 2024, it marked a shift after Dota topped the standings last year.

The International 2025 remained the centrepiece of the season, accounting for around one-tenth of Dota 2’s annual prize pool. Beyond TI, prize money was spread across a packed calendar of million-dollar events such as PGL Wallachia, BLAST Slam, FISSURE PLAYGROUND, and DreamLeague.

That crowded schedule has created challenges for teams, with some forced to skip tournaments due to calendar overload, a growing issue as more organisers enter the ecosystem.

Honor of Kings holds strong in third place

For the second year running, Honor of Kings secured a spot in the top three. The TiMi Studio Group MOBA awarded $21.7 million in prize money across 2025, with nearly half coming from the King Pro League Grand Finals.

Unlike other titles, Honor of Kings operates within a tightly structured competitive system. As a result, total prize growth was limited to just 3.8 percent, with much of the increase influenced by currency fluctuations, as most prize pools are paid in Chinese yuan.

Fortnite and PUBG Mobile round out the top five

Fortnite climbed to fourth place in 2025, awarding $15.6 million in prize money, up 14.6 percent from the previous year. The boost came from changes to the competitive format, including the split of North America into NA West and NA Central, alongside new events like the FNCS 2025 Pro-Am.

PUBG Mobile followed closely in fifth with $15.3 million awarded. While that figure represented a slight year-over-year decline, the change was largely attributed to currency adjustments and a redistribution of prize pools across regions, particularly within the Chinese Peacekeeper Elite League.

League of Legends and Valorant see major growth

League of Legends recorded one of the biggest percentage jumps of any major esport. Total prize money rose to nearly $15 million, a 59 percent increase compared to 2024. Riot Games significantly boosted international events, with the Mid-Season Invitational jumping to a $2 million prize pool and Worlds increasing to $5 million. The addition of new events like First Stand and a larger Esports World Cup presence also played a key role.

Valorant climbed to seventh place with $11.2 million in prize money, up 23 percent year over year. The game’s inclusion in the Esports World Cup proved pivotal, with teams competing for more than $1.2 million in Riyadh, where Team Heretics claimed the title after defeating Fnatic.

Rocket League, Rainbow Six, and PUBG close out the top 10

Rocket League enjoyed a strong year, with prize money rising 45 percent to $9.7 million. Growth came from increased payouts at majors, Saudi eLeague events, and a near-doubling of prize money at the Esports World Cup. The introduction of RLCS 1v1 tournaments also added new earning opportunities.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege placed ninth with $9.4 million, a modest decline of 2.3 percent due to small changes in the seasonal format.

Rounding out the top 10 was PUBG: Battlegrounds, which awarded $7.8 million in 2025. The PUBG Nations Cup doubled its prize pool, and the year featured more A-Tier events, including two Twitch Rivals tournaments.

With the Esports World Cup distributing more than $70 million across 25 tournaments and publishers continuing to invest heavily, 2025 has set a new benchmark for competitive gaming. The collaboration aims to give professional players a more consistent, precise, and comfortable competitive environment, both on stage and behind the scenes.

🤝 PGL teams up with @secretlabchairs to set a new standard of precision on all PGL tournament stages in 2026, powered by Secretlab MAGNUS Pro Sit-to-Stand Metal Desk, Secretlab TITAN Evo, and Secretlab InfinitePrecision™ Armrest (On-Stage Standard)⭐️

📰 Read all the details… pic.twitter.com/E692yYsCkj

— PGL (@pglesports) December 16, 2025

Announced on December 16, the deal will see complete Secretlab tournament grade setups rolled out across every PGL tournament in 2026, covering main stages, practice rooms, and backstage areas.

A New Standard for Competitive Play in 2026

Under the agreement, all players competing at PGL events will use the Secretlab On-Stage Standard Collection. This setup is designed to help players recreate their exact practice environment on stage, reducing adjustment time and eliminating guesswork between tournaments.

By standardising equipment across all events, PGL wants to ensure teams can focus entirely on performance, rather than adapting to unfamiliar desks or chairs from one venue to the next. The goal is simple, create a seamless experience that supports peak performance at every stop on the circuit.

What’s Included in the On-Stage Standard Setup

The Secretlab On-Stage Standard Collection brings together several of the brand’s flagship products, each built with precision and adjustability in mind.

The Secretlab MAGNUS Pro Sit-to-Stand Metal Desk allows players to fine-tune their desk height down to 1mm, with a height range between 650mm and 1,250mm. Using a built-in control panel, players can quickly dial in the exact height that suits their posture, build, and play style.

Players will also compete on the Secretlab TITAN Evo chair, which features Secretlab’s proprietary ergonomic technologies. Designed for long training sessions and high pressure matches, the chair provides adjustable support to help players stay comfortable and focused throughout competition days.

Rounding out the setup is the Secretlab InfinitePrecision™ Armrest, described as the most advanced armrest the company has ever produced. With millimetre precise height calibration and a digital display, players can replicate the same armrest settings every single time they sit down on stage.

Focus on Consistency and Player Comfort

According to PGL CEO Silviu Stroie, the partnership is about improving the overall experience for everyone involved at PGL events, especially the players.

“Players spend countless hours practising and competing, and having equipment that supports them makes a real difference,” Stroie said. “This partnership is about creating the best possible environment for everyone involved at our events.”

Every player station, from practice rooms to the main stage, will be fully equipped with Secretlab gear. By keeping setups consistent across all locations, PGL hopes to remove unnecessary variables and help players stay locked in from the first match to the final.

Secretlab Expands Its Esports Footprint

For Secretlab, the partnership further strengthens its presence in top tier esports. The On-Stage Standard Collection was launched to help players replicate their home or team practice setups across different tournaments worldwide, and the PGL deal puts that concept into action on a global scale.

With millimetre level precision and repeatable configurations, the collaboration highlights how tournament infrastructure continues to evolve alongside the demands of professional play.

A Busy Year Ahead for PGL

The Secretlab partnership is the latest step in PGL’s push to cement itself as one of the leading tournament organisers in 2026. Earlier this year, the company also partnered with 1xBet as the exclusive betting partner for PGL Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2 events through to the end of 2026.

In Counter-Strike 2 alone, PGL is set to host four Tier 1 tournaments between February and October, starting with PGL Cluj-Napoca 2026. The organiser will also run the second CS2 Major of the year in Singapore from November 25 to December 13.

Outside of CS2, PGL will continue its long term commitment to Dota 2, hosting three tournaments in March, April, and November, with events planned through to 2028.

With consistent setups, premium equipment, and a packed calendar ahead, PGL’s partnership with Secretlab looks set to play a key role in shaping the competitive experience throughout the 2026 season.

After months of waiting following one of the longest post-TI patch gaps in Dota history, Patch 7.40 finally shakes up both public matches and the competitive meta in a big way.

Largo Joins Dota 2 as a Bard-Style Support Hero

The headline addition in Patch 7.40 is Largo, a melee Strength hero designed around durability, team support, and battlefield control. Previously rumoured as “Bard Frog”, Largo hails from the ancient living island of Velu’Mar, where song and magic are deeply intertwined.

Raised among shamanic bards who learned to commune with the island itself, Largo now travels the realms with his frogling disciples, searching for inspiration to save his silent homeland. In combat, that musical heritage translates into a unique kit built around buffs, disruption, and tempo control.

Largo is classified as a Durable, Disabler, and Support hero, offering strong utility and teamfight presence rather than raw damage output.

Largo’s Abilities Explained

Largo arrives with a full set of abilities that blend familiar Dota mechanics with brand-new ideas.

Catchy Lick

Largo lashes out with his tongue, pulling a targeted unit toward him over a short distance. The ability applies a basic dispel and deals damage if the target is an enemy. Successfully dispelling an effect also grants Largo temporary health regeneration.

Frogstomp

Largo tosses froglings into a target area, where they stomp the ground every second. Each stomp deals damage, applies a mini-stun, and slows enemy movement, making it an effective zoning and control tool during skirmishes.

Croak of Genius

This ability targets a friendly hero, reducing the mana cost of their abilities and items while causing a portion of their damage to reverberate over the next five seconds. Each time the affected hero spends mana, the remaining duration of the buff is reduced slightly, rewarding efficient spellcasting.

Amphibian Rhapsody

Largo’s ultimate is one of the most experimental abilities ever added to Dota 2. When activated, Largo becomes disarmed and his ability bar switches to three musical songs. Each song provides a different teamwide effect, including spell amplification, movement speed with slow resistance, or healing.

To keep the songs active, players must strum to the beat, introducing a rhythm-game mechanic similar to Guitar Hero. Each successful strum grants a stack of Groovin’, increasing Largo’s armour and reducing mana costs. Missing a beat causes stacks to drop, making timing and consistency critical.

Aghanim’s Shard and Scepter Upgrades

Largo launches with both Aghanim’s upgrades available.

Aghanim’s Shard allows Largo to receive the same buffs he casts on allies. When he targets himself, the buff is also shared with nearby teammates.

Aghanim’s Scepter enables Largo to play two songs per beat during Amphibian Rhapsody, significantly increasing his teamfight impact. It also causes additional magic damage to enemies based on the number of Groovin’ stacks he has built up.

Interestingly, Largo does not currently have Facets, making him one of the few modern heroes to launch without that system.

Winter Treasure Collector’s Cache Arrives

Alongside the new hero, Valve has released the Winter Treasure 2025 Collector’s Cache. The cache features 16 cosmetic sets for a range of heroes, including Tiny, Centaur Warrunner, Silencer, Morphling, Enigma, Broodmother, Primal Beast, Shadow Fiend, and more.

Each Winter Treasure cache costs 2.65 EUR, continuing Valve’s seasonal tradition of community-driven cosmetic releases.

Patch 7.40 Map Changes Shake Up Familiar Terrain

Patch 7.40 introduces several notable map changes designed to create tighter fights and riskier objectives.

Wisdom Rune areas have been lowered into sunken terrain, making them far more dangerous to contest. Sidelanes and outer jungles have been narrowed, with additional trees added to create choke points and ambush opportunities.

Several Watchers have been repositioned, some neutral camps have been removed or downgraded, and both the Radiant and Dire bases now feature an additional Defender’s Gate. This new backdoor functions similarly to the existing one while providing a small radius of vision, opening up new defensive and flanking options.

Major Gameplay and System Changes

Patch 7.40 delivers a wide range of gameplay updates beyond terrain tweaks.

Six new neutral items have been added across different tiers, while several controversial items have been removed from the neutral pool, including Helm of the Undying, Sister’s Shroud, Pyrrhic Cloak, and Phyrrhic Cloak.

One of the most talked-about changes prevents illusions from applying Diffusal Blade’s mana burn, a long-standing interaction that heavily affected heroes like Phantom Lancer and Medusa. The adjustment is expected to significantly alter how illusion-based cores are played.

Support players have also welcomed a new restriction that prevents wards from being placed too close to each other within a short time window, reducing excessive vision stacking.

Featured Hero Reworks in Patch 7.40

Several heroes received major reworks as part of the update.

Lone Druid now has a Spirit Bear with its own talent tree, while Sylla gains a new Entangle ability to root enemies.

Slark sees Essence Shift moved to an innate ability, with a new skill called Saltwater Shiv allowing him to steal enemy health regeneration and movement speed.

Treant Protector’s kit has been made more aggressive, with changes to Leech Seed and a powerful Overgrowth upgrade that pushes him toward closer engagements.

Beyond these, dozens of heroes received buffs, nerfs, and Facet adjustments, contributing to a noticeable meta reset.

What Patch 7.40 Means for Dota 2

Dota 2 Patch 7.40 is not a minor refresh. Between the arrival of Largo, meaningful map changes, a reshuffled neutral item pool, and sweeping hero adjustments, the update is set to redefine both pubs and professional play.

While Largo will not be available immediately in DreamLeague Season 27 matches, history suggests it is only a matter of time before the frog bard makes his competitive debut.

For now, players can dive into the update, experiment with the new hero, and explore how Patch 7.40 reshapes the game’s rhythm, quite literally.

If you’ve ever rage-quit a match or muttered something unprintable after a bad wipe, you’re not alone. According to a new analysis of Reddit discussions, some gaming communities are far more likely than others to vent their frustration with colourful language.

A recent study conducted by Streamproject DE, and shared with media outlets on December 8, analysed comment threads across major gaming subreddits to identify which fanbases swear the most online. The findings offer a snapshot of how different communities express frustration, excitement, and intensity during heated discussions.

ARC Raiders Tops the List

Taking the number one spot, ARC Raiders recorded the highest volume of curse words, with 1,447 instances detected across analysed Reddit comments. Despite not yet being fully released, discussions around difficulty spikes and high expectations appear to have players venting early and often.

Close behind, Dota 2 ranked second with 1,429 curse words, reinforcing its long standing reputation as one of the most emotionally intense competitive games. High-pressure ranked matches and team-based decision making continue to fuel passionate, and sometimes salty, conversations.

Rounding out the top three, Baldur’s Gate III logged 1,421 curse words, suggesting that even critically acclaimed RPGs with deep storytelling and moral choices can spark heated debate among fans.

The Rest of the Top 10

Several other major franchises also featured prominently in the rankings, highlighting how competitive and high-stakes gameplay often goes hand in hand with expressive language.

The top ten most foul-mouthed gaming communities, according to the study, are:

ARC Raiders – 1,447

Dota 2 – 1,429

Baldur’s Gate III – 1,421

NBA 2K26 – 1,404

The Outer Worlds 2 – 1,398

Cyberpunk 2077 – 1,396

Red Dead Redemption 2 – 1,375

Further down the list are familiar heavyweights such as League of Legends, GTA V, Skyrim, Fallout 76, and Elden Ring, though none managed to break into the top ten this time.

The full list:

Fortnite’s Surprisingly Low Ranking

One of the more unexpected findings sees Fortnite placed at 46th, with 1,015 curse words recorded. Despite its fast-paced gameplay and competitive moments, the data suggests Fortnite’s community may be comparatively less prone to venting frustration through strong language than many other gaming fanbases.

What the Study Looked At

The analysis was carried out by Streamproject DE and distributed to press by Easy Media, operating under Primal Cohort. Researchers examined Reddit comments posted over a two-week period, tracking the frequency of commonly used curse words to identify which gaming communities expressed the most heated reactions.

While the study focuses solely on Reddit and does not account for subreddit size or player base differences, it provides an interesting snapshot of how emotion plays out across gaming communities online.

Methodology

The study analysed comments from Reddit gaming communities over a two-week period, tracking the frequency of curse words such as “sht,” “fck,” “ss,” “mron,” “stupid,” and “d*mn.” The goal was to identify which video game communities generated the most expressive and heated discussions during that time.

A Major Shift for One of SEA’s Most Iconic Teams

BOOM Esports has officially closed the book on its long running Dota 2 journey. After eight years of competing across Southeast Asia and the international stage, the Indonesian organisation confirmed on social media that it is exiting the professional Dota 2 scene and parting ways with its entire roster.

Today, we say farewell to our Dota 2 division.
A journey filled with passion, challenges, and memories we will always carry with us.

Thank you to every player who wore the BOOM jersey with pride. Thank you to the Hungry Beast for standing beside us through every high and every… pic.twitter.com/YNU5jAX1Cb

— BOOM Esports (@boomesportsid) December 8, 2025

The announcement marks the end of a legacy built on passion, regional pride, and a string of memorable tournament runs. While the team steps away from Valve’s iconic MOBA, BOOM reassures fans that its story in esports is far from over.

BOOM Reflects on Its Departure

In a heartfelt message posted to X, BOOM Esports thanked every player who ever wore the jersey and every supporter who stood by them through victories and defeats.

“Thank you to every player who wore the BOOM jersey with pride. Thank you to the Hungry Beast for standing beside us through every high and every low. This legacy will forever be part of who we are.”

Founder and CEO Gary Ongko Putera also shared a personal farewell, celebrating the team’s journey through two appearances at The International and years of competition.

He added that building BOOM Esports was one of his original goals, and that despite the division’s closure, friendships within the Dota community will continue. “On to the next chapter,” he wrote.

A History That Elevated Indonesian Esports

Originally known as BOOM ID, the organisation was instrumental in pushing Indonesian talent onto the global stage. Over the years, the team expanded to include stars from across Southeast Asia, cementing its position as one of the region’s most respected Dota 2 names.

Their most iconic run came at the GAMERS GALAXY Invitational Series in Dubai in 2022. BOOM stunned the competition by defeating heavyweights like Team Secret, Team Spirit, and Nigma Galaxy, before taking down Tundra Esports in the grand finals. That same Tundra roster would later go on to win The International 2022, making BOOM’s victory even more impressive in hindsight.

The team also notched strong results throughout 2022, including a top twelve finish at ESL One Stockholm and a top eight at the PGL Arlington Major.

A Turbulent 2025 and Declining Results

Despite their legacy, BOOM Esports had a difficult year in 2025. Though they qualified for The International 2025, they finished in 14th to 15th place, unable to regain their earlier form.

Their final appearance came during the Southeast Asian qualifiers for BLAST Slam V. The roster was promising on paper, led by superstar carry 23savage alongside sanctity, Jabz, Jhocam, and NARMAN. But results failed to improve, and the organisation eventually made the decision to step away from the esport entirely.

Where BOOM’s Players Have Landed

Following the disbandment, many players quickly found new homes. 23savage, Jabz, Jhocam, and NARMAN have joined the newly rebuilt Team Nemesis, which is preparing to compete in DreamLeague Season 27. sanctity remains a free agent for now, though he previously played under Natus Vincere.

The Organisation Moves Forward in Other Games

Although BOOM Esports is leaving Dota 2 behind, its presence in competitive gaming remains strong. The organisation continues to compete in Valorant, Honor of Kings, and PUBG Mobile.

Their Valorant journey included a rare promotion to VCT Pacific through Ascension 2024 after Bleed Esports’ disqualification. However, BOOM later failed to retain an International League spot and returned to the Challengers circuit.

Elsewhere, the organisation has seen rising success in mobile esports. BOOM’s Honor of Kings roster recently won the Philippines Kings League Spring 2025, marking its first major title in the mobile MOBA.

A Farewell, but Not a Goodbye

BOOM Esports’ exit from Dota 2 closes a significant chapter in Southeast Asian esports history. The organisation spent years shaping regional talent, producing memorable upsets, and inspiring a passionate fanbase known as the Hungry Beast.

While the Dota 2 era has ended, BOOM makes it clear that its wider esports ambitions are only growing. Fans can expect new adventures ahead as the organisation shifts its focus to other competitive titles.

Stay Hungry, Hungry Beast.

In a surprise move that no one saw coming, Valve has officially teamed up with Capcom to bring the world of Monster Hunter into Dota 2. The crossover event, now live, transforms the MOBA into a hunting ground filled with monsters, craftable gear, and iconic companions from Capcom’s hit franchise.

Running for the next three months, this limited-time event introduces a new hunt and crafting system, along with free hero sets, new pets, and plenty of monster-themed surprises. For fans of both series, it’s a dream come true, and yes, Dragon Knight can now turn into Rathalos.

Six Monster Hunter Armour Sets to Collect

Players can collect six Monster Hunter-inspired armour sets, each designed after classic equipment from the franchise. These sets include fan-favourite looks for heroes such as:

Free Rewards and the Hero Atlas

The event is accessible to all Dota 2 players, with the core version of each hero set available for free once players harvest the required materials from hero hunts. To keep track of progress, Valve has introduced the Hero Atlas, a new feature that logs your hunts, lore, and dispatches penned by Axe’s loyal scribe, Goodkind.

Alongside the cosmetics, players are treated to a short comic starring Axe and Goodkind, setting up the lore behind the crossover and adding a charming narrative touch to the event.

The Expedition Pack: More Monsters, More Loot

For those eager to go all-in, the Expedition Pack adds premium content, including:

This premium bundle offers both flair and functionality, giving dedicated players even more to hunt for.

The Hunt is On

With the Monster Hunter collaboration replacing traditional seasonal events like Diretide and Frostivus this year, fans have plenty to dive into while waiting for Dota 2’s next chapter. The crossover blends the spirit of both franchises, rewarding grind, detailed cosmetics, and a touch of chaos, all wrapped in Dota 2’s trademark humour.

The hunt will run through early 2026, so gear up, track your prey, and show off your newly forged sets in style. Just remember, in this hunt, the monsters might not be the only ones in danger.

A New Chapter Begins in Southeast Asia

OG Esports has officially unveiled its new Dota 2 roster, marking a bold new era for the organisation as it expands from Europe into Southeast Asia. The two-time International champions announced an all-Filipino line-up through a cinematic two-minute trailer posted on social media, declaring their intent to “stake their claim to SEA Dota 2.”

A new chapter unfolds today, in a region that feels like home.

New legends rise and we’re here to stake our claim to SEA Dota 2. pic.twitter.com/UFFkaa5CZn

— OG (@OGesports) November 8, 2025

After a year of inconsistent results and a full roster disbandment just weeks earlier, this move represents both a fresh start and a calculated pivot for one of the most storied organisations in Dota 2 history.

From Europe to the Philippines

The new roster consists entirely of the former Team Aureus line-up, a squad that had been making waves in the SEA region before catching OG’s attention. The players now donning the OG jersey are:

John ‘Natsumi-’ Anthony Vargas

Erin Jasper ‘Yopaj-’ Ferrer

Nikko ‘Nikko’ Bilocura

Timothy ‘Tims’ Randrup

Rolen Andrei Gabriel ‘Skem’ Ong

Adam ‘343’ Erwann Shah bin Akhtar Husseih (Coach)

Coach 343 brings valuable experience from his time with Fnatic and other SEA rosters, providing stability and insight for the newly formed team.

OG’s move was met with excitement from both international and local fans, especially as SEA has long been considered one of the most passionate Dota 2 regions. Co-founder and Dota legend Sébastien “Ceb” Debs spoke warmly about the decision, saying:

“If the SEA region is going to finally get the championships it deserves, I’m sure that will be with OG. SEA always felt like home to us, and I want to thank all the SEA fans for the support that you always provided to OG.”

Meet the New Legends

Each member of OG’s new roster brings notable experience and achievements.

Natsumi-, formerly with Talon Esports, claimed victory at the MESA Invitational 2024 after defeating Natus Vincere 2-0 in the Grand Final.

Nikko, also known as “Force,” previously played for MOUZ and helped them win the Dota 2 World Invitationals 2024, sweeping L1GA TEAM 3-0.

Veterans Yopaj, Tims, and Skem are all familiar faces from their time with BOOM Esports, a team that made headlines in 2022 by winning the GAMERS GALAXY Invitational Series Dubai.

This roster blends established experience with regional synergy, giving OG a strong foundation as they aim to re-establish their competitive legacy.

OG’s Next Challenge

Fans won’t have to wait long to see the new OG roster in action. The team will debut at PGL Wallachia Season 6, running from November 15th to 23rd, 2025, where they’ll face world-class opponents like Team Liquid, MOUZ, and Tundra Esports.

With a $1 million (~USD) prize pool on the line, this tournament will serve as the perfect proving ground for OG’s Southeast Asian resurgence.

A Legacy Reborn

OG remains one of the most successful organisations in Dota 2 history. The team famously won The International 2018 and 2019, defeating PSG.LGD and Team Liquid respectively, and became the only organisation to ever win back-to-back TI titles, earning a combined $26.8 million USD in prize money.

While recent years have seen mixed performances, OG’s legacy remains unmatched, and their move into SEA signals renewed ambition. The shift could also bring fresh competition to a region hungry for its first International title.

As OG begins this new journey with an all-Filipino roster, one thing is clear: the spirit of OG—bold, fearless, and full of heart—remains as strong as ever.
