SkinBid, one of the most recognisable third party marketplaces for CS2 skins, is officially shutting down after four years in operation. The company has entered bankruptcy proceedings in Denmark, and users now have a short window to withdraw their items and wallet balances before the platform goes offline for good.

Dear users,

It’s with a heavy heart that we share these very important news.

SkinBid’s journey ends here. What was a very hard, but fun 4-year road stops. SkinBid ApS (the company behind https://t.co/uIHKGw8n1F) has been placed under bankruptcy proceedings on the 21st of…

— SkinBid (@SkinBid) November 27, 2025

Below is a full breakdown of what happened, why the shutdown matters for Counter Strike players, and what you need to do if you still have skins on the site.

A Sudden End To A Four Year Journey

SkinBid announced the closure through an emotional statement shared on X, confirming that the company behind the platform, SkinBid ApS, was placed under bankruptcy proceedings on 21 November 2025.

The team described the journey as “hard, but fun”, while making it clear that the decision was final. Despite the bankruptcy, the website will remain temporarily accessible so users can complete withdrawals.

According to the official statement, all withdrawals must be finished by 5 December 2025, so users are encouraged to act quickly.

What Led To SkinBid’s Shutdown?

While SkinBid did not outline specific reasons, the shutdown comes just one month after a major CS2 update dramatically disrupted the in game economy.

Valve recently introduced a new Trade Up contract that allows players to exchange five Covert skins for a knife or a pair of gloves. This new system shifted the market significantly, causing a sharp drop in the overall CS2 skin market cap before it slowly began recovering.

It is not confirmed that the update directly affected SkinBid’s financial stability, but many fans have noted the timing.

Reactions From The Founders

SkinBid was co owned by popular streamer Mark “ohnePixel” Zimmermann and ECSTATIC co owner Oliver “zipeL” Behrensdorff. Both founders spoke about the closure, but zipeL’s statement offered a deeper look into the difficulties behind the scenes.

400,000 amazing users, great employees and 4 years of hard work comes to a close 💔

My dream was to run a EU compliant marketplace, I did, but ultimately it did not work out.

Ups and downs, loads of obstacles, some completely out of our control, but ultimately it ends like… https://t.co/tfeiTaDDJj

— zipeL🇩🇰 (@zipelCS) November 27, 2025

He reflected on their four year journey, the 400,000 users they served, and the many obstacles that came their way. His dream was to run a fully EU compliant marketplace, and while he achieved that, it still was not enough to keep SkinBid afloat.

Despite the disappointment, he said he remains proud of the product they built, the community they supported, and the lessons learned. He also confirmed that his focus now is helping shut the platform down properly.

What SkinBid Users Need To Do Now

If you have any skins or balance left on SkinBid, withdrawing them should be your highest priority.

The site will stay online for a limited time specifically to allow users to retrieve their items, and the deadline is Friday, 5 December 2025. After that date, it is unlikely any stored items or funds will be recoverable.

This is an important reminder for anyone who has used the marketplace recently or may have forgotten that they still have items linked to their account.

The Impact On The CS2 Community

The closure of SkinBid is a major moment for the CS2 trading community. The platform became widely trusted because of its compliance based approach, transparent listings, and reputable ownership from ohnePixel and zipeL.

Losing one of the most prominent marketplaces comes at a difficult time, as the CS2 economy is still finding stability after recent updates. How this affects skin trading long term is still uncertain, but the immediate priority is ensuring all users withdraw their assets safely.

Retakes are back and knives just got easier to get

Valve has dropped a major Counter-Strike 2 update, reintroducing the long-awaited Retakes mode and unlocking the ability for players to trade up for coveted knives and gloves. The update, released on October 22, 2025, also includes visibility tweaks to Inferno, community map updates, and a wave of performance improvements.

Retakes is back! Check out today’s Blog Post, Re-Retakes: https://t.co/7PC61OrsOe

— CS2 (@CounterStrike) October 22, 2025

The highlight, though, is clear: players can now exchange five Covert-tier items in the Trade Up Contract for a guaranteed knife or pair of gloves, a first in CS2 history.

Knife and glove trade-ups explained

The update expands the Trade Up Contract’s functionality to include Covert-quality items. Players can now:

Exchange five StatTrak™ Covert items for one StatTrak™ Knife from one of the provided collections.

Exchange five regular Covert items for one regular Knife or Gloves item from the same pool.

This essentially allows dedicated collectors, or anyone with a handful of reds, to roll the dice for the most prestigious cosmetics in CS2.

While it sounds like great news for fans tired of the case-opening grind, it’s sent shockwaves through the CS2 skin economy. According to reports, the market has already lost over $1.75 billion USD (~£1.3 billion) in value within hours of the patch going live.

Skin investors are furious

The CS2 community has been split. Some are celebrating the new accessibility, while others, particularly traders and collectors, see it as a total collapse of the in-game economy.

“Counter-Strike rugged its entire community,” said Ryan ‘Fwiz’ Wyatt, former Head of YouTube Gaming. “They just rinsed everyone in the market who had anything of any value.”

Many long-time traders echoed this frustration, with one HLTV forum user lamenting, “Valve just ruined their own milking of case openings. What a stupid move.” Others, however, see it as a necessary reset.

American streamer Erik ‘fl0m’ Flom argued the change was overdue, saying, “The market manipulation that was happening and driving prices to the point where people couldn’t buy them without investing an insane amount of money to get a nice skin is out of hand.”

This is gonna have the pitchforks out im sure at me but the market manipulation that was happening and driving prices to the point where people couldnt buy them without “investing” an insane amount of money to get a “nice” skin was/is out of hand.

Despite the uproar, some players are thrilled. “I’m not in it for the money,” one user wrote. “I’m just glad to finally have a knife that doesn’t cost $1400.”

Retakes officially return

While the skin economy drama steals the spotlight, the return of Retakes is a big deal for competitive players. The official mode is back in matchmaking, supporting Defusal Group Alpha and Delta maps.

Retakes pits players in a 4v3 post-plant scenario, where attackers must hold off defenders trying to defuse the bomb using limited resources and weapons. The mode’s return has been highly requested since CS2’s launch, giving fans a fast-paced way to sharpen their clutch mechanics.

Map updates and gameplay tweaks

Alongside the new content, Valve has also rolled out several smaller fixes and improvements:

Inferno: Adjustments at the top of Quad and under Balcony for improved visibility.

Golden, Palacio, and Rooftop: Updated to the latest community versions from the Steam Workshop.

Molotov and Smoke logic: Fixed for better consistency when multiple smokes are active.

Performance: General optimisations, reduced blur in item icons, and stability improvements in menus and inspection screens.

What this means for CS2’s future

The October update marks one of the most controversial patches since CS2’s launch. While the Retakes mode and visual improvements enhance gameplay, the trade-up overhaul has completely reshaped the skin economy, possibly for good.

Whether this move drives more players into CS2 or pushes collectors away remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure, Valve’s latest patch has everyone talking.

Minh “Gooseman” Le, the co-creator of Counter-Strike, has shared his thoughts on some of the most talked-about features in CS2, including Valve’s controversial subtick system, weapon charms, and the possibility of pets making their way into the game.

Le spoke in a recent chat with CS2 content creator Thour, where he admitted he doesn’t quite understand why Valve is sticking so firmly to subtick. The system, introduced in CS2 as a replacement for the traditional tickrate, is meant to make gameplay more responsive and precise. However, it’s been a hot topic among the community since launch, with many players still calling for a return to the old 128-tick servers used in CS:GO.

I asked Minh Le (@GoosemanCS), the co-creator of @CounterStrike, what he thinks about Subtick and Charms in the game.

He also shared his opinion about Pets, which have been leaked in the game files multiple times. 🐔 pic.twitter.com/0rmLt34gjk

— Thour (@ThourCS2) September 9, 2025

“I know subtick is a really controversial feature that Valve are implementing, and I don’t know the exact reasons why they are so adamant in keeping it,” Gooseman said. “Most casual players don’t really notice the difference between CS:GO’s tickrate and CS2. At least that’s what I feel when I talk to my casual friends that play CS2. I am hopeful that Valve will come up with an ideal solution, as I am sure they’re well aware of the complaints about it.”

His comments reflect the split in the CS2 player base. For competitive and professional players, even the smallest inconsistencies in how shots register can make or break a game, while casual players often don’t notice any difference. Valve has insisted that subtick is the future of CS2’s netcode, but Gooseman’s uncertainty shows that even the man who helped shape the franchise isn’t fully convinced.

Charms and Skins Are Fine, But Pets Cross a Line

When asked about cosmetic additions like weapon charms and the long-running rumours of pets hidden in the game’s files, Gooseman admitted he’s come to terms with skins and charms being part of CS.

“I’ve accepted the skins and trinkets that get hung on the weapons. It was never my initial intention for CS to have colourful skins but over the years, I’ve come to accept the fact there are weapon skins. I even think many of them look really cool,” he said.

But the idea of pets actually following players around, as leaked multiple times in CS2’s files, is where he draws the line. “I think pets would be ok, as long as they’re hung on the gun. But if they decide to add actual pets in the game, like a cat that follows you around like in World of Warcraft, then I’ll have to brush off my pitchfork and make my way down to Valve’s offices,” Gooseman joked.

Why His Words Still Matter

Although Gooseman hasn’t been directly involved with Counter-Strike’s development since leaving Valve in 2006, his opinion still carries weight with fans. Counter-Strike has always been known for its competitive integrity and no-nonsense design, so features like subtick and pets strike at the heart of what players expect from the franchise.

His remarks highlight the tension between Valve’s desire to evolve CS2 into a modern shooter with more cosmetic appeal, and the community’s passion for preserving the simplicity that made the series iconic. For some, weapon skins and charms are harmless additions that help keep the game thriving. For others, the thought of pets running around the battlefield feels like a step too far from Counter-Strike’s roots.

As the subtick debate continues and Valve experiments with new content, it’s clear that fans will be watching closely, and Gooseman’s voice remains a reminder of where Counter-Strike came from, even as the series pushes into new territory.

Counter-Strike 2 players might be in for some big changes soon. According to fresh leaks from trusted dataminers, Valve could be preparing to bring back Retake Mode and introduce a completely new feature known as Volatile Cases. Both were spotted hidden within CS2’s files after the latest updates, giving fans plenty to talk about.

Retake Mode returns in CS2

Dataminer Prom_molekura managed to enable Retake Mode directly from the game files, and to everyone’s surprise, most of the features are already working. A gameplay video posted on YouTube shows the mode running with working spawn points, rules, weapon selection menus, and everything you would expect.

If you played Retake in CS:GO, you’ll recognise the setup. Teams fight in post-plant scenarios where one side has to retake a bombsite while the other defends. The CS2 version looks almost identical, just updated for the new engine and mechanics.

According to the dataminer, the mode was unplayable when first added in beta but has since been updated to a functional state. That suggests Valve is quietly preparing it for an official release, possibly in the next big CS2 update. There’s no confirmed date yet, but fans are already excited for its return.

Interestingly, Prom_molekura also spotted files mentioning Bounty Hunt Mode, a throwback to Operation Hydra. This mode worked like a deathmatch where enemies dropped dog tags after dying, and you only earned points once you collected them. Whether it makes a full comeback in CS2 remains to be seen.

Volatile Cases explained

The same dataminer uncovered details on something entirely new called Volatile Cases. At first, many thought this was a new type of loot box, but it seems closer to a system that lets players buy specific skins from existing cases.

Here’s how it works. When you click on a case in your inventory, you’ll see a new option to “Connect with Arms Dealer.” In the unboxing menu, a laptop icon can also appear, letting you activate the volatile function. Instead of rolling for a random drop, this feature could allow you to purchase the skin you want directly from the case.

Valve might even release a trial run for this system, similar to when rentable skins were introduced. According to the code, volatile cases will work with all standard cases except souvenir packages, since those don’t use rentable skins.

What remains unclear is how pricing will be handled. Will the values match the current Steam Market and third-party offers, or will Valve set its own structure? That’s still a mystery, but the idea of being able to grab older skins directly is huge news for collectors and players alike.

What it means for CS2

Both features point to Valve working on expanding CS2’s content in meaningful ways. Retake Mode will give competitive players a dedicated environment to practise clutch situations, while Volatile Cases could completely change how skins are bought and collected.

For now, all of this remains in the datamining stage. Valve hasn’t confirmed any release dates or official details, but the fact that these features are already partially functional suggests they might be closer than expected.

CS2 fans will just have to wait and see whether the next big patch brings these long-awaited updates to life.
