Microsoft has cut the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99 per month, effective immediately, reversing a chunk of the steep increase that angered subscribers last year. PC Game Pass also drops from $16.49 to $13.99 per month. The trade-off, and there is one, is that new Call of Duty games will no longer land on Game Pass at launch starting this year.

The announcement came via a blog post on Xbox Wire from Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming, who stepped into the role after Phil Spencer retired in February. It is the first major consumer-facing move of her tenure, and it directly addresses feedback that Game Pass had simply become too expensive.

What Is Changing With Game Pass Pricing

The new pricing applies globally, although Microsoft notes figures may vary by region. Both reductions are live now, so existing subscribers should see the lower rate reflected on their next billing cycle.

Plan

Previous Price

New Price

Reduction

Game Pass Ultimate

$29.99 / month

$22.99 / month

~23%

PC Game Pass

$16.49 / month

$13.99 / month

~15%

For context, Microsoft pushed Ultimate up by $10 to $29.99 in October, a roughly 50% hike that landed badly with the community. The new $22.99 price still sits above the pre-October rate, but it claws back most of the gap.

Call Of Duty Is No Longer A Day-One Perk

The catch is tucked into the same announcement. Starting with this year’s release, new Call of Duty titles will not be included on Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. Instead, they will be added roughly a year later, during the following holiday season.

Any Call of Duty titles currently in the Game Pass library are unaffected and remain playable for subscribers. If you want to play the newest entry on day one, you will need to buy it outright, presumably at the standard $69.99 price point.

That shift is significant because day-one Call of Duty access was one of the main selling points Microsoft leaned on after the Activision Blizzard acquisition closed in 2023. Removing it reshapes what Game Pass Ultimate actually offers at the top tier.

Why Microsoft Is Pulling This Lever Now

The move lines up with internal messaging that leaked earlier this month. Sharma reportedly told Xbox staff in a memo that Game Pass had become too expensive for players, and that the team needed a better value equation. The same reporting flagged that leadership was weighing removing Call of Duty from day-one availability, which is exactly what has now happened.

It is also a response to the shape of Microsoft’s gaming business. Gaming made up 7% of total revenue in the company’s fourth quarter, and that unit’s revenue was down around 10% year over year while other divisions like Azure and Microsoft 365 grew by double digits. Hardware sales fell 32%, and the broader Xbox content and services line came in below internal projections. CFO Amy Hood also flagged an unspecified impairment charge tied to the gaming business on the earnings call.

In her blog post, Sharma framed the decision around player feedback rather than financials:

Our players cover a wide breadth of geographies, preferences, and tastes, so while there isn’t a single model that’s best for everyone, this change responds to a lot of feedback we’ve gotten so far. We’ll continue to listen and learn.

What Subscribers Still Get At The New Price

Even with Call of Duty pulled back from day-one, Ultimate keeps the rest of its feature set intact. That includes hundreds of games across Xbox console and PC, in-game benefits, online console multiplayer, unlimited Xbox Cloud Gaming, and major day-one releases from other first-party and third-party studios.

Game Pass had 34 million subscribers based on the last figure Microsoft shared in 2024, and the service still spans four tiers: Ultimate, Premium, Essential, and PC Game Pass. Only Ultimate and PC Game Pass have been repriced in this round.

Sharma’s Early Direction For Xbox

This is not Sharma‘s first visible course correction. Since taking over from Spencer, she has already wound down the “This is an Xbox” advertising campaign, saying it did not feel like Xbox. The Game Pass price cut pushes in the same direction, trying to rebuild goodwill with the core player base after a bruising year for the brand.

The Call of Duty trade-off is the part that will define how this announcement ages. For players who subscribed mainly to play the new Call of Duty on day one, the maths has changed. For everyone else, Ultimate just got cheaper without losing anything they already had access to.

Whether this brings lapsed subscribers back, or whether the holiday-season Call of Duty additions feel like enough of a headline draw a year from now, is the next thing worth watching. Microsoft has signalled it is willing to listen, and the pricing itself is clearly still a moving target.

New Xbox chief Asha Sharma has openly acknowledged what subscribers have been saying for months: Game Pass costs too much. In an internal memo to Xbox staff, Sharma confirmed that Microsoft is actively looking at reworking its subscription model, describing the current pricing as unsustainable and promising a “more flexible system” down the line.

What The Leaked Memo Actually Says

The memo, obtained by The Verge, lays out Sharma’s position on Game Pass in surprisingly direct terms. “Game Pass is central to gaming value on Xbox. It’s also clear that the current model isn’t the final one,” she wrote. “Short term, Game Pass has become too expensive for players, so we need a better value equation. Long term, we will evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system which will take time to test and learn around.”

Sharma also acknowledged the “online chatter” surrounding rumours of Game Pass pricing changes, telling employees she would “go deeper” on the topic in the coming week. No specific pricing adjustments or structural changes were outlined in the memo itself, but the tone suggests Microsoft is past the denial stage and actively working on solutions.

How Game Pass Got This Expensive

Game Pass has come a long way from its 2017 launch, when US$9.99 per month got you access to the full library. Today, the service is split across Ultimate, Premium, and Essential tiers, each with different content access, and the pricing reflects that fragmentation. Game Pass Ultimate currently sits at US$29.99 per month following a 50 percent price hike last year, while PC Game Pass jumped from US$11.99 to US$16.49.

A significant factor behind the cost increase was Microsoft’s decision to fold Call of Duty into the subscription. The Verge’s Tom Warren reported nearly two years ago that Microsoft had internally debated whether adding new Call of Duty releases to Game Pass would cannibalise the franchise’s retail revenue. Microsoft went ahead with it in mid-2024, and the subscription price climbed accordingly.

Microsoft attempted to soften the blow of the latest increase by bundling additional perks like Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft Classics into higher tiers. But the value proposition has clearly not landed with everyone, and Microsoft does not publicly share subscriber numbers to gauge the real impact.

Call Of Duty Could Be On The Chopping Block

One of the more notable rumours circling right now is that Microsoft might pull Call of Duty from Game Pass entirely. Windows Central’s Jez Corden raised the possibility on the XB2+1 podcast over the weekend, saying it would “reveal some of the cracks in the strategy” if it happened this year.

Beyond the Call of Duty question, there have been whispers about new Game Pass tiers, including one that would focus exclusively on first-party titles. A straightforward price reduction has not been widely speculated on, though it remains the most obvious lever Microsoft could pull.

The Broader Industry Problem With Pricing

Sharma’s admission does not exist in a vacuum. The wider games industry is grappling with the same tension between rising costs and consumer tolerance. Sony has been experimenting with personalised dynamic pricing to tempt PS5 owners with tailored discounts. Nintendo recently announced it would sell digital versions of first-party titles at a lower price than their physical counterparts, starting with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Epic Games also drew criticism for increasing the cost of V-Bucks in Fortnite.

The subscription model itself has also faced growing scepticism from developers. The director of Revenge of the Savage Planet noted that the game performed well on Game Pass but failed to generate meaningful revenue, arguing that giving content away for free trains players not to pay for it. Former Bethesda VP Pete Hines similarly acknowledged that most Game Pass adoption comes at the expense of retail sales.

What Comes Next For Game Pass

Sharma’s memo does not commit to a timeline or a specific plan, but the language strongly suggests changes are being shaped internally. Immediate price drops in the coming days seem unlikely, though a restructuring of tiers or content access could materialise in the weeks ahead.

The stakes are high for Sharma personally. She faced criticism from parts of the Xbox community over her perceived lack of gaming credentials when she was appointed, and delivering a tangible improvement to Game Pass value would go a long way toward building trust with the player base. Under her leadership, Xbox also appears to be refocusing on console hardware, having quietly shelved the “This is an Xbox” marketing campaign while confirming its next-generation console effort, Project Helix.

If you’ve ever wondered why massive games like Roblox and Minecraft seem to live in their own universe, new data suggests that’s not just a feeling, it’s actually backed by research.

A recent report from Newzoo reveals that Roblox and Minecraft players are far less likely to engage with traditional AAA games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows or Ghost of Yōtei, highlighting a growing divide in how different audiences approach gaming.

Newzoo Data Shows Minimal Overlap With AAA Titles

Speaking at GDC’s Festival of Gaming, Newzoo’s director of consulting Ben Porter explained that players from Roblox and Minecraft don’t cross over much into what the industry typically considers “premium” or “traditional” games.

According to the data, Roblox players are about 0.4 times as likely to play titles like Monster Hunter Wilds compared to the average console player. That stat specifically applies to PlayStation and Xbox ecosystems, where AAA titles tend to dominate.

The same pattern appears across other major releases. Minecraft players are among the least likely to pick up games like Clair Obscur Expedition 33, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Borderlands 4, Ghost of Yōtei, NBA 2K26, and EA Sports Madden NFL 26.

For Roblox players, the list is similar, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Borderlands 4, Alan Wake 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and again, Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Live Service Games Still Dominate Player Overlap

While AAA single-player games struggle to pull in these audiences, the same can’t be said for live service titles.

Newzoo’s data shows strong overlap between Roblox and Minecraft players and some of the biggest multiplayer games on the market. Fortnite leads the pack, with a 55 percent overlap with Roblox players and 46 percent with Minecraft players.

Grand Theft Auto V follows with 28 percent overlap for Roblox and 25 percent for Minecraft, while Call of Duty sits at 26 percent and 22 percent respectively.

That pattern lines up with what many players already experience, these audiences tend to stick with social, repeatable, and constantly updated games rather than one-off narrative experiences.

Graphics Are No Longer The Main Draw

One of the more interesting takeaways from the report is how much player priorities have shifted over the past decade.

Porter noted that chasing cutting-edge graphics is no longer the defining factor of success. Instead, the most popular games globally are often those with simpler visuals but stronger social or creative hooks.

Roblox is a clear example of this trend. Its playtime reportedly grew around 50 percent year over year, driven heavily by viral player-created experiences like Steal a Brainrot and Grow a Garden.

These aren’t high-fidelity, cinematic games, but they don’t need to be. Their appeal comes from creativity, accessibility, and community-driven gameplay.

Younger Players May Be Shaping The Future Of Gaming

Another key factor behind this divide is demographics.

Roblox and Minecraft audiences skew younger, often falling into a time-rich but cash-poor category. That makes them less likely to spend money on full-priced AAA releases, especially when free-to-play alternatives offer endless replayability.

Newzoo also suggests that these early gaming habits could shape long-term preferences. For many players, Roblox or Minecraft isn’t just another game, it’s their first real gaming experience.

That raises an important question for the industry, whether these players will eventually transition to traditional AAA titles as they get older, or stick with the kinds of games they grew up with.

Some Crossover Exists In Similar-Style Games

Despite the overall divide, there are still pockets of overlap outside of live service giants.

Newzoo found that Roblox players are more likely than average to engage with games like Gang Beasts, Among Us, and Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. These titles share a similar design philosophy, focusing on sandbox-style chaos, social interaction, or emergent gameplay.

Even then, Porter noted that this group represents a relatively small portion of overall player behaviour, reinforcing how distinct these ecosystems have become.

Industry Faces A Long-Term Shift In Player Behaviour

The bigger picture here is what this means for the future of gaming.

If younger players continue to favour sandbox and live service experiences over traditional AAA games, the industry could see a long-term shift in where time and money are spent.

Newzoo’s broader report already hints at change, predicting that PC revenue will overtake console by 2028, alongside the first significant market expansion since the pandemic slowdown.

At the same time, not everyone agrees that AAA games are at risk. Former Sony Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden previously suggested that player tastes naturally evolve with age, meaning younger audiences could still “graduate” into more traditional experiences later on.

For now though, the data paints a clear picture, Roblox and Minecraft players aren’t just playing different games, they’re shaping a different kind of gaming culture entirely.

The shutdown date for Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile has now been officially confirmed. Activision has announced that the game’s servers will go offline on April 17, 2026, after which the mobile battle royale will no longer be playable.

As a final step in the previously communicated service changes to Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, the servers for Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will go offline on April 17, 2026.

We’re incredibly grateful to our community who dropped in and showed up for us! This decision does not… pic.twitter.com/YIzmOCyhlM

— Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile (@WarzoneMobile) February 16, 2026

The update was shared via the official Warzone Mobile social channels on February 16, 2026, and backed up by a detailed support page outlining exactly what players can expect in the final weeks before the game goes dark.

Servers Going Offline In April 2026

According to Activision’s support statement, April 17, 2026 marks the final day Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will be accessible. Players who still have the game installed can continue playing and engaging with existing content until that date.

After April 17, the servers will be permanently shut down. The game will no longer be available for play in any form.

This confirmation follows service changes first announced in May 2025, when Warzone Mobile was removed from Google Play and Apple’s App Store. At that time, Activision ended new seasonal content, stopped gameplay updates, and discontinued in-app purchases using real currency.

The April 2026 shutdown is described as the “final step” in those previously communicated service changes.

Why Warzone Mobile Is Being Taken Offline

In an accompanying FAQ, Activision directly addressed the reason behind the decision.

The company stated that while it was proud of bringing an authentic Call of Duty: Warzone experience to mobile, the game “did not meet our expectations with mobile-first players like it has with PC and console audiences.”

That wording lines up with broader reporting from outlets including GameSpot and Engadget, both of which noted that support effectively ended nearly a year ago. The title has not received new content since mid-2025 and has not been available for new downloads since its store removal.

Despite early ambitions for the project, including comments in 2024 from Activision mobile co-head Chris Plummer about expanding Call of Duty’s reach across platforms, the mobile version ultimately struggled to replicate Warzone’s success on PC and consoles.

What Happens To Accounts And COD Points

Activision’s support page also clarifies what players need to know before shutdown day.

Guest accounts will no longer be accessible once the servers go offline. Activision accounts themselves will still exist, but they will no longer be accessible through Warzone Mobile. They remain usable across other Activision titles and websites.

Real-money purchases were disabled on May 19, 2025. Players who still have the game installed can spend any remaining COD Points in the in-game store until April 17, 2026. After that date, unused COD Points will no longer be accessible.

Refunds will not be offered for previously purchased content or unused COD Points.

Players who previously bought in-game items can continue using that content until the shutdown date, provided the game remains installed on their device.

Reinstallation is not possible, as Warzone Mobile has been delisted from both Google Play and the App Store since May 2025.

Alternatives For Mobile Players

While Warzone Mobile is coming to an end, Activision has reiterated that its broader mobile strategy remains intact.

Call of Duty: Mobile continues to receive seasonal updates and recently launched a new season featuring a fresh Battle Pass, map variant, and additional features. The standalone mobile title includes Battle Royale, Multiplayer, Zombies, and the extraction-based DMZ: Recon mode.

For players wanting the full Warzone experience, Call of Duty: Warzone remains free to play on PC and consoles including Xbox, PlayStation, Battle.net, and Steam.

Activision closed its shutdown announcement by thanking the Warzone Mobile community for its support and emphasised that player feedback continues to shape the future of the franchise.

With just a couple of months remaining until April 17, 2026, the final circle is approaching for Warzone Mobile. Anyone still holding onto COD Points or unfinished matches may want to drop in while they still can.

— Call of Duty Updates (@CODUpdates) January 15, 2026

The game’s RICOCHET Anti-Cheat team has confirmed a stronger, cloud-based security system is coming, designed to stop cheaters before a match even begins. For competitive players, this could be one of the most important updates Call of Duty has rolled out in years.

A New Security Layer Before Matches Start

According to the RICOCHET Anti-Cheat team, Ranked Play in Season 02 will introduce remote, cloud-based attestation, an extra layer of protection that checks a player’s PC integrity before loading into a match.

This new system builds on existing requirements like TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, but goes further by using Microsoft Azure Attestation to verify that system-level protections have not been tampered with.

RICOCHET describes this as the most robust attestation technology available today, setting what it calls a new security bar for one of Call of Duty’s most competitive modes.

Why This Matters For Ranked Play

Cheating has long been a major frustration in competitive playlists, especially in high-skill modes tied closely to esports standards. By verifying PC integrity before a match starts, the new system aims to block cheats that attempt to bypass low-level protections.

This approach is being introduced first in Ranked Play, giving competitive players the most secure experience possible. Casual modes are not part of this rollout for now, but the focus on Ranked shows where Call of Duty sees the biggest risk and impact.

Most Players Will Not Need To Change Anything

The good news for most PC players is that no extra setup should be required. The RICOCHET team says the majority of systems are already compliant with the new checks.

However, players are encouraged to double-check their settings ahead of Season 02 to avoid last-minute issues. Those who do need help can follow Activision’s official guides to ensure everything is enabled correctly.

TPM 2.0 And Secure Boot Explained

TPM 2.0, or Trusted Platform Module 2.0, is a hardware-based security feature built into modern PCs running Windows. Secure Boot works alongside it, ensuring only trusted software loads during startup.

Both features help protect against low-level cheats and are now mandatory for playing Black Ops 7 and Warzone on PC. These requirements were first introduced during Season 05 in August 2025.

Players without TPM 2.0 enabled may see an in-game warning when launching the game. In some cases, a BIOS firmware update may be required, especially on older motherboards.

Windows 11 users likely already have both features enabled by default. Windows 10 players must be running version 22H2 or later, with TPM 2.0 fully active. Legacy TPM versions, such as 1.0 or 1.2, are not supported.

Strong Results So Far In Black Ops 7

For the Black Ops 7 cycle, Activision has clearly made anti-cheat a top priority. During the Black Ops 7 beta, the publisher claimed that 97 percent of hackers were detected and banned within 30 minutes of signing in.

With cloud-based attestation now joining Secure Boot and TPM 2.0, Activision is hoping to reduce cheating even further, particularly in modes that mirror professional competition.

Season 02 Launch Date And What’s Coming

Based on the in-game Battle Pass countdown, Season 02 for Black Ops 7 and Warzone is set to launch on February 5, 2026.

The update will introduce Ranked Play across multiplayer and battle royale, offering an experience designed to reflect the structure and rules of the Call of Duty League and major Warzone tournaments.

With stronger anti-cheat measures stopping cheaters before matches begin, all eyes will be on whether Ranked Play can finally deliver a consistently fair and competitive environment.

The video game industry is mourning the loss of one of its most influential figures. Vince Zampella, the co-creator of Call of Duty and a founding force behind Respawn Entertainment, has died following a car crash in Southern California. He was 55.

The news was confirmed on 23 December, sending shockwaves through the global gaming community, where Zampella was widely regarded as a visionary leader who helped shape modern shooters.

A Fatal Crash in the San Gabriel Mountains

According to the California Highway Patrol, Zampella was involved in a single-vehicle accident at around 12.45 pm on Sunday along Angeles Crest Highway, a winding scenic road north of Los Angeles.

Authorities say the southbound Ferrari veered off the road and struck a concrete barrier. The vehicle caught fire, trapping the driver inside. Zampella died at the scene, while a passenger who was ejected from the car later died in hospital. Investigators have not yet released details on what caused the crash.

Witnesses reportedly provided video of the incident, which involved a 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS, a high-performance hybrid sports car.

Geoff Keighley Pays Emotional Tribute

Zampella’s longtime friend and industry figure Geoff Keighley shared a heartfelt message on social media.

Vince was an extraordinary person — a gamer at heart, but also a visionary executive with a rare ability to recognize talent and give people the freedom and confidence to create something truly great.

I saw that up close while writing The Final Hours of Titanfall. I’ll always be…

— Geoff Keighley (@geoffkeighley) December 22, 2025

“I cannot believe I am writing this,” Keighley said, describing Zampella as “a titan of the video game industry” and “a dear friend”.

Keighley reflected on working closely with Zampella while writing The Final Hours of Titanfall, praising his honesty, transparency, and unwavering commitment to putting players first. He added that despite Zampella’s legendary body of work, it always felt like his greatest game was still ahead of him.

From Infinity Ward to Respawn Entertainment

Zampella began his career in the mid-1990s before co-founding Infinity Ward in 2002 alongside Jason West and Grant Collier. There, he helped create Call of Duty, a series that would go on to sell more than 500 million copies worldwide.

Under his leadership, Infinity Ward produced some of the franchise’s most celebrated titles, including Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2, helping redefine the first-person shooter genre.

After departing Activision in 2010, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment, which was later acquired by Electronic Arts. At Respawn, he oversaw the creation of critically acclaimed games such as Titanfall and the global hit Apex Legends.

Leading Battlefield and a Last Public Appearance

In recent years, Zampella also took on a senior leadership role overseeing EA’s Battlefield franchise. Just 10 days before his death, he appeared at The Game Awards 2025, where Battlefield 6 won Best Audio Design.

EA described his passing as “an unimaginable loss”, calling Zampella a friend, leader, and visionary whose influence would be felt for generations.

A Legacy That Shaped Modern Gaming

Beyond sales figures and awards, Zampella was known for empowering creative teams and prioritising craftsmanship over trends. Colleagues frequently credited him with recognising talent early and giving developers the freedom to take bold risks.

From Medal of Honor to Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Battlefield, his fingerprints are on some of the most important games of the past two decades.

As tributes continue to pour in, one sentiment is shared across the industry. Vince Zampella didn’t just make successful games, he changed how they were made, and how millions of players experienced them.

The Call of Duty League has lifted the lid on the official maps and modes for the Black Ops 7 competitive season, giving fans their first full look at how the 2026 action will shape up. With a mix of brand new battlegrounds, returning favourites, and a fresh game mode entering the rotation, the year ahead is already generating a buzz across the community.

A New Map Pool for a New Era

Unveiled on November 25, the CDL’s map pool brings six multiplayer maps into the spotlight across Hardpoint, Search and Destroy, and the newly introduced mode Overload.

Most of these maps have never been seen on the CDL stage before. Only Raid, the legendary three-lane classic from Black Ops 2 and Black Ops Cold War, is making a comeback. The league appears to be leaning heavily into fresh layouts, with a strong focus on tight chokepoints and traditional three-lane structures that encourage fast strategic play and allow different roles to shine.

Official CDL 2026 Maps and Modes

Search and Destroy
Colossus
Den
Exposure
Raid
Scar

Hardpoint
Blackheart
Colossus
Den
Exposure
Scar

The Competitive Ruleset for 2026

Alongside the map pool, the CDL also released Competitive Settings Version 1.0. These settings were built in collaboration with league administrators, coaches, and pro players, aiming to keep Black Ops 7 balanced, competitive, and enjoyable to watch.

The league confirmed that the VS Recon sniper rifle is available for competitive use. Snipers have been a point of debate in recent years due to their one-shot potential at long distances, but their return gives skilled marksmen new opportunities to influence matches.

Beyond weapon allowances, the ruleset outlines round timers, objective conditions, revive behaviour, respawn delays, perks, streaks, and more. Field upgrades are allowed, tactical sprint is enabled, and most lethal and tactical equipment is restricted to prevent chaotic gameplay. The list of banned items covers LMGs, marksman rifles, shotguns, launchers, several optics, a full suite of lasers, and a long roster of streaks and perks that could disrupt competitive balance.

Overload Makes Its CDL Debut

This year introduces Overload as the third official mode of the season. Teams fight over a single moveable objective, scoring by delivering it to a marked goal. It blends elements of Capture the Flag, Escort, and Control into a fast, pressure driven format.

Matches last up to five minutes with a score cap of eight. Sudden death rules keep the tension high, especially with the device respawning into preset locations. Overload adds a fresh tactical layer to the CDL, pushing teams to adapt quickly in its high-tempo environment.

Season 1 Update Brings More Classic Maps

Black Ops 7’s Season 1 update goes live on December 4, just one day before the competitive season begins. Three iconic maps return to multiplayer: Standoff, Meltdown, and Fringe.

All three have appeared in esports before, raising the possibility that the CDL may expand the map pool later in the season. Fans have already expressed excitement about the mix of new battlegrounds and classic favourites returning to the franchise.

Community Reaction: A Promising Start

The initial response to the CDL 2026 lineup has been largely positive. Many players are pleased to see so many new maps take centre stage, while still having old favourites like Raid restabilise the competition.

“Lots of new maps in the pool, gonna be a lit start to the season,” one fan commented shortly after the reveal.

With the league locking in its competitive foundation and the first update set to drop next week, the stage is set for one of the most refreshing Call of Duty seasons in years.

The Race Returns for Black Ops 7

The Race to Prestige has become a launch tradition for the Call of Duty series, giving the community a fun, competitive way to dive into each new title. For Black Ops 7, the stakes are set even higher. A massive lineup of 25 teams is aiming to hit Level 1000 as fast as possible, with Call of Duty’s social channels providing daily updates on rankings and progress.

Fans can expect to see a wide mix of squads in the running, including:

Punkill Race
Monsters
Aviões do COD
Team Mariale
Piperno
JCKingz Team
CZBR
Teamos Brasileirinhos
Noctis
MX Esports Brasil
Begamers
EU Baddies XO
Matrix Squad
Istigghilul
A Rippers Team
Marvel
Nuke Squad
Vegas Inferno
Project Reset
Cup of Robots
Mroaft x Legion Lan
Team Fenix
GoonOps67
Ranked Play Grinders
Team Swishe
MTD

It is a truly global roster, with creators from Brazil, Mexico, Europe, and the United States all racing for the top spot.

What Players Are Racing Toward

Black Ops 7 includes ten Prestige levels to complete before players can begin the climb toward the coveted Prestige Master. It is a lengthy grind, but the race to be the first adds extra excitement to the early days of the game.

The event also helps kickstart the multiplayer scene, especially since this year’s title holds extra nostalgia value. Black Ops 7 is a direct sequel to Black Ops 2, returning players to a world that shaped much of Call of Duty’s competitive history. Black Ops 2 was responsible for the rise of League Play and the original CoDCaster system, both of which helped push COD esports into the mainstream.

A Big Year Ahead for Black Ops 7 Esports

Although the Race to Prestige is front and centre at launch, the esports calendar for Black Ops 7 is already stacked.

In October, the Call of Duty League revealed the event locations for the 2026 season. For the first time in five years, the CDL will head back to the United Kingdom, hosting a Major at DreamHack Birmingham from 27 to 29 March 2026. Four Majors and the CDL Championship are on the way, marking one of the biggest competitive years in recent memory.

Black Ops 7 has also secured a spot as one of the first 20 featured titles for the Esports World Cup 2026 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This tournament sits outside the regular CDL season, giving players and organisations another high-profile event to compete in.

A Launch Filled With Competition and Community

The Race to Prestige adds a fun, community-driven competition to the launch of Black Ops 7, bringing fans together to watch their favourite creators race through levels with barely any sleep. With daily progress updates, global teams, and a year of esports already locked in, Black Ops 7 is lining up for a massive competitive run.

Whether you are grinding levels yourself or watching teams push to Prestige Master, this year’s race is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet.

A New Direction for Matchmaking

Treyarch has officially clarified how skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) will work in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, just days before its November 14 release. After weeks of heated discussion within the community, the developer has confirmed that most multiplayer playlists will not heavily factor in player skill, marking a major shift from how matchmaking has worked in recent entries.

Hey everyone, to clarify: just like in the Black Ops 7 Beta, skill will be minimally considered in every Open playlist. We’ve also added persistent lobbies and new playlists since the Beta, including Quick Play.

Here’s what you’ll see on day one: pic.twitter.com/cEddWYzpAn

— Treyarch (@Treyarch) November 12, 2025

In a statement shared on social media, Treyarch explained that Black Ops 7’s multiplayer will be divided into two categories: Open and Standard playlists.

Open playlists will have minimal skill consideration, allowing players of all levels to match together more freely.

Standard playlists, on the other hand, will still use skill-based matchmaking as an important consideration.

At launch, almost all playlists will fall into the Open category, with only one rotating Moshpit playlist placed under the Standard category where skill matching remains active.

Persistent Lobbies and Community Feedback

Another major addition coming to Black Ops 7 multiplayer is the return of persistent lobbies, a fan-favourite feature that lets players stay together across multiple matches unless they choose to leave.

Treyarch confirmed:

“Just like in the Black Ops 7 Beta, skill will be minimally considered in every Open playlist. We’ve also added persistent lobbies and new playlists since the Beta, including Quick Play.”

This decision was largely driven by fan requests. Persistent lobbies have been absent from recent Call of Duty titles, but their return is expected to make matches feel more social and old-school, similar to the franchise’s earlier days.

Not a Complete Removal of SBMM

Despite what some fans might have assumed, SBMM hasn’t been entirely removed from Black Ops 7. Instead, it’s now an option rather than the rule. Players looking for a more competitive experience can still queue for Standard playlists or wait for Ranked Play, which will use full SBMM when it arrives in Season 2.

This mixed matchmaking model gives players freedom of choice. Casual fans can enjoy more relaxed matches, while competitive players still have structured modes where skill matching matters.

Why the Change?

While Treyarch hasn’t explicitly stated why it decided to loosen SBMM, it’s hard to ignore the timing. The Battlefield 6 hype has been building ahead of its own release, and giving players more freedom in matchmaking may help Call of Duty stay appealing to its massive player base.

It also addresses a long-running fan demand. For years, players have criticised SBMM for making public matches feel overly competitive and sweaty. By introducing Open playlists, Black Ops 7 is aiming to bring back that “just-for-fun” feeling many long-time fans have missed.

Looking Ahead

It remains to be seen how these matchmaking systems will evolve over time, but Treyarch has hinted that it will monitor data after launch to see which playlists players gravitate toward.

For now, though, the studio’s approach feels like a strong middle ground. Whether you’re jumping in for laid-back chaos or climbing the ranked ladder, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 looks ready to cater to both sides of the community.

From Console to Cinema

Following a landmark deal between Paramount and Activision in September, the Call of Duty film is now moving full steam ahead. The collaboration will see Sheridan and Berg co-write and produce the project, with Berg also stepping into the director’s chair.

Paramount, a Skydance Corporation, is handling production and distribution for the live-action adaptation. The studio says the movie will capture the signature intensity, realism, and action that have made Call of Duty a household name while expanding its universe for both long-time fans and new audiences.

David Ellison, CEO of Paramount, expressed his excitement about the project, saying:

“Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honour and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly. We’re approaching this film with the same commitment that guided Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the high standards fans deserve.”

A Perfect Match for Military Storytelling

Berg and Sheridan aren’t strangers to military dramas. Berg is best known for Lone Survivor, Patriots Day, and Deepwater Horizon, all films that showcased gritty, grounded portrayals of heroism under fire. Sheridan, meanwhile, is behind the hit series Lioness, Tulsa King, and 1883, and was nominated for an Academy Award for his Hell or High Water screenplay.

The duo also share a long professional friendship, previously collaborating on Hell or High Water and Wind River. Their proven ability to combine character-driven storytelling with raw, cinematic realism makes them an ideal fit for a Call of Duty adaptation.

Honouring the Franchise’s Legacy

Activision President Rob Kostich emphasised that the film will stay true to what fans love most about the games.

“Throughout its history, Call of Duty has captured imaginations with incredible action and intense stories. With Paramount, we’ve found a fantastic partner to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen.”

While plot details are still under wraps, fans have already begun speculating about whether the film will adapt iconic campaigns from Modern Warfare or Black Ops. Many are hoping to see fan-favourite characters like Captain Price, Ghost, and Soap come to life in a faithful adaptation.

The Franchise’s Global Reach

Since its debut in 2003, Call of Duty has become one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. It has been the No. 1 best-selling series in the U.S. for 16 consecutive years, selling more than 500 million copies worldwide. Its mix of gripping single-player campaigns and blockbuster multiplayer modes has kept players engaged for over two decades.

The film announcement comes as Activision celebrates a packed year for the franchise, including the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and the Call of Duty Mobile World Championship 2025, which runs from November 7–9 in Katowice, Poland.

What’s Next for Sheridan and Berg

Beyond Call of Duty, both filmmakers have busy schedules ahead. Berg recently wrapped The Mosquito Bowl, a World War II drama for Netflix, and continues to executive produce a reboot of Friday Night Lights. Sheridan, meanwhile, is developing multiple projects under his new five-year deal with NBCUniversal, including Landman Season 2 and the upcoming thriller F.A.S.T., slated for release in 2027.

With their shared passion for grounded, high-stakes storytelling, Sheridan and Berg are set to deliver a Call of Duty adaptation that could finally break the curse of underwhelming video game movies, and set a new benchmark for the genre.
