The Last of Us Online was roughly 80 percent finished when Naughty Dog cancelled it in late 2023, according to the game’s director Vinit Agarwal. In a lengthy interview with the Lance E. Lee Podcast recorded in Tokyo, Agarwal described the cancellation as “soul-crushing” and revealed he only found out the project was being axed 24 hours before Sony announced it publicly.

Agarwal joined Naughty Dog back in 2014 and spent nearly seven years working on the multiplayer spinoff, from 2016 through to its cancellation in 2023. He has since left the studio and moved to Japan to found his own game development company.

A Game That Was “Very, Very Close To Done”

During the interview, Agarwal made it clear the project wasn’t some early prototype that got shelved. The Last of Us Online had reached around 80 percent completion and was, in his words, “very very close to done.” The studio had made significant progress, and the game was performing well internally.

But Naughty Dog ultimately had to choose between two projects: the multiplayer game Agarwal was directing, or the next single-player title led by studio president Neil Druckmann. That project turned out to be Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which was revealed at The Game Awards 2024 as Naughty Dog’s first new franchise in over a decade.

“They had to pick the game that was kind of the bread and butter of the studio rather than this experimental game that I was working on,” Agarwal said. He added that he believed the multiplayer project “was going to be really big, but unfortunately couldn’t see the light of day.”

Sony’s Live-Service Push and the COVID Hangover

Agarwal traced the roots of the cancellation back to the broader industry shift that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Around 2020, as people were stuck at home and turning to online games to stay connected with friends, Sony poured money into live-service development. The Last of Us Online was one of the projects that benefited from that wave of investment.

The problem was that the conditions driving that boom didn’t last. As lockdowns eased and people returned to offices, gaming spending dropped and the appetite for online multiplayer titles cooled. Sony had overcommitted, and the pullback hit hard. In 2022, the company told investors it planned to have at least 10 live-service games online by 2026. By 2023, that ambition was already unravelling, with six games delayed internally and subsidiary Bungie laying off staff.

Bungie’s Role in the Decision

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida shed some additional light on the cancellation last year in an interview with Sacred Symbols+. According to Yoshida, feedback from Destiny developer Bungie, which Sony had acquired, played a role in convincing Naughty Dog to walk away from the project. Bungie reportedly laid out what it actually takes to sustain a live-service game long term, and Naughty Dog realised the commitment would leave no room for Intergalactic.

“That was a lack of foresight,” Yoshida said. This lines up with earlier reports that Naughty Dog scaled back development following an internal review from Bungie, and that the studio went through a round of layoffs in October 2023 before the multiplayer project was officially put on ice.

A Deeply Personal Project

What makes the cancellation sting even more is just how personal the project was for Agarwal. He explained that the core vision for The Last of Us Online was inspired by a real-life armed robbery he experienced in Austin, Texas in 2012, where two men held him and a friend at gunpoint with shotguns over what amounted to a few dollars and a McDonald’s meal on a stolen credit card.

That feeling of desperation, of being hunted for scraps, became the foundation of the game’s design. Set in the post-apocalyptic Last of Us universe, players would scavenge for supplies in a world where other players were one of the most dangerous threats. Agarwal described playing an early build where he hid from another player in overgrown grass while they searched for him, and said the tension authentically recreated that survival instinct he felt during the robbery.

“It was such a personally meaningful project to me that it killed me that people couldn’t play it,” Agarwal said. That experience ultimately drove his decision to leave Naughty Dog and start his own studio.

Sony’s Wider Live-Service Fallout

The Last of Us Online was far from the only casualty of Sony’s live-service rethink. The years since its cancellation have been rough across the board. Sony cut 900 jobs at the start of 2024. Concord, the sci-fi shooter from Firewalk Studios, was shut down just two weeks after launch, and Sony closed both Firewalk and fellow subsidiary Neon Koi. Two more unannounced live-service titles at Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio were also scrapped, with Bluepoint itself eventually being shut down entirely.

Sony is now placing its live-service hopes largely on Marathon, the upcoming title from Bungie that carries the weight of years of expectation. Beyond Sony, the broader live-service landscape remains volatile. Warner Bros. pulled the plug on MultiVersus in early 2025, Wargaming’s Steel Hunters lasted barely three months, and titles like Highguard have been permanently shut down within weeks of launching.

What Comes Next for The Last of Us

With Naughty Dog focused on getting Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet out the door, there’s no active Last of Us project in development that we know of. Studio president Neil Druckmann has teased that more Last of Us is coming eventually, but it has already been six years since The Last of Us Part II, nearly matching the gap between the first and second games. A potential Part III likely wouldn’t surface until sometime in the 2030s, possibly on the PlayStation 6.

If you’ve been waiting to try Bungie’s new extraction shooter, the Marathon Server Slam is almost here. The open preview weekend runs from February 26 at 10 AM PT through to March 2 at 10 AM PT, giving players a few days to jump in before the full launch on March 5.

This Server Slam isn’t just a casual beta. It’s a global technical stress test for Marathon, designed to push the game’s infrastructure at scale for the first time. In short, Bungie wants as many of us logging in, forming crews, infil-ing and exfil-ing as possible so they can see what breaks before launch day.

Marathon Server Slam Release Date And Platforms

The Marathon Server Slam begins February 26 at 10 AM PT and ends March 2 at 10 AM PT. It will be available worldwide.

You can play on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Cross-play and cross-save are enabled, so you can squad up with mates across platforms and carry your account between them. Importantly, you do not need to purchase Marathon to access the Server Slam.

Console players also won’t need PlayStation Plus during the preview weekend. However, once Marathon fully launches on March 5, a paid online subscription will be required on console.

Preloading will not be available for the Server Slam. Bungie says this is to help manage server load when everything first goes live. Preloading will return for the full launch.

What Makes This A Server Slam

Bungie has been running smaller monthly playtests, but this is the first time all systems are being switched on globally.

Because it’s a stress test, players should expect login queues, disconnects, error codes, and even short-notice maintenance downtime. The goal is to “slam” the servers with as many active players as possible to gather telemetry and fix issues before March 5.

This also means the weekend may feel less stable than launch. Bungie has been upfront that things might break, and that’s very much the point.

Maps And Zones Available During Server Slam

During the Marathon Server Slam, players can infil into two zones on Tau Ceti IV:

Perimeter, an edge-site expansion on the colony’s outskirts

Dire Marsh, the colony’s agricultural research hub

These represent two of the four launch zones. The late-game areas Outpost and Cryo Archive will only be available once Marathon fully launches and Season 1 begins.

The Server Slam is described as a slice of the launch experience. It’s enough to get a feel for the pacing, gunplay, contracts, and progression systems, but not the full package.

Factions, Contracts And Progression

Five factions will offer early contracts during the preview:

CyberAcme

NuCaloric

Traxus

MIDA

Arachne

Players can progress through early faction levels and upgrade trees for each of these. The sixth faction, Sekiguchi Genetics, will only unlock at launch.

While you can level up and experiment with upgrades, your overall progression will not carry over to the full game. Instead, your playtime translates into launch rewards.

Runner Shells And Playstyles

The Server Slam includes five of the six Runner shells planned for launch, plus Rook, described as the scavenger experience.

Available shells include:

Destroyer

Assassin

Recon

Vandal

Triage

The sixth shell, Thief, will be added at launch alongside Ranked mode and expanded end-game content.

Players can run solo, drop in as a crew, or even form temporary alliances using proximity chat. And yes, you can betray those alliances just as quickly.

Marathon Server Slam Rewards And Arrival Caches

Even though progression resets, Bungie is offering exclusive rewards for participating.

Complete the introductory mission and you’ll unlock a unique Beta.exe emblem and Complex Study player background. These cosmetics are exclusive to Server Slam participants.

Beyond that, your progress unlocks Arrival Caches that will be delivered when Marathon launches on March 5.

Complete your first mission to earn the Standard Arrival Cache, which includes standard implants, Runner shell cores, weapon chip mods, and weapons like Overrun and Hardline.

Reach Runner Level 10 and you’ll unlock the Enhanced Arrival Cache, which upgrades your loot pool with enhanced implants, additional shell cores for each shell, enhanced weapon chip mods, and weapons such as the Enhanced Magnum and Enhanced Hardline.

Hit Runner Level 30 and you’ll earn the Deluxe Arrival Cache. This includes deluxe and enhanced implants, deluxe and enhanced Runner shell cores for every shell, deluxe and enhanced weapon chip mods, weapons like the Deluxe Magnum and Enhanced Volley Rifle, plus an Enhanced Base Backpack.

All of these rewards will be delivered via the in-game mailbox after launch. Bungie notes that rollout may take time, and Twitch Drops can take up to 48 hours to appear and must be redeemed by March 31.

Twitch Drops During The Server Slam

If you prefer watching before jumping in, the Marathon Server Slam also features Twitch Drops.

By linking your Bungie and Twitch accounts and watching streams in the Marathon category during the event window, you can earn cosmetic rewards for launch. Rewards include a Twitch Sponsored Kit, the SMILEYworm emblem, WEAVEworm background, GLOWworm weapon sticker, and the HMG Twitch Engine weapon skin style.

Any stream under the Marathon category counts, making it easy to stack rewards while learning the maps.

What Carries Over And What Does Not

Your faction progress, inventory, and character levels from the Server Slam will not carry over to launch.

What does carry over are your earned cosmetic rewards and Arrival Caches. On top of that, the experience you gain learning Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and the faction systems will naturally give you an advantage on day one.

With launch set for March 5 and Season 1 bringing additional zones, Ranked mode, the Thief Runner shell, and deeper progression, the Marathon Server Slam feels less like a simple beta and more like a final systems check before everything goes live.

For players curious about how Marathon actually feels to play, this weekend is the first large-scale chance to find out.

Marathon is officially kicking off its Server Slam on February 26, giving players their first large-scale chance to jump into Bungie’s new survival extraction shooter before launch.

The open preview weekend runs from February 26 to March 2 on PlayStation 5 and other platforms, acting as a stress test ahead of the game’s full release on March 5. Bungie confirmed the dates during Sony’s State of Play presentation, where Marathon closed out the show with a prominent gameplay trailer and an expanded look at Tau Ceti IV.

Server Slam Dates And What You Can Play

The Marathon Server Slam begins February 26, 2026 at 10AM PT and ends March 2 at 10AM PT. Bungie is positioning it as a large-scale playtest rather than a traditional open beta, but functionally it gives players free access to a substantial slice of the game just one week before launch.

During the Server Slam, players will be able to infiltrate two zones:

Perimeter

Dire Marsh

Five faction contract lines will be available in their opening form, and all six Runner Shells can be tested, along with Rook in scavenger mode. Solo queue is supported, and proximity chat is enabled, allowing for uneasy alliances or immediate betrayals depending on how brave you’re feeling.

Bungie has also confirmed that the preview will support all of Marathon’s available languages worldwide.

A First Look At Tau Ceti IV

Marathon is set in the year 2893, centuries after the UESC Marathon colony ship left Mars for Tau Ceti in 2472. The 30,000 colonists who were meant to build a new future never responded back. Contact was lost.

Now, players step into the boots of bio-cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners. Funded by rival factions, they drop onto the hostile surface of Tau Ceti IV to scavenge, extract and survive. Security forces, competing Runners and unpredictable environments all stand in the way, while the derelict Marathon ship looms in orbit above.

The new gameplay trailer shown during State of Play highlighted fast-paced firefights, traversal tools, and the tension that comes with extraction-based objectives. Bungie is clearly leaning into high-risk, high-reward runs, where every deployment is a gamble.

PlayStation Plus Weapon Charms Revealed

Bungie also revealed PlayStation Plus-exclusive cosmetic rewards that will be redeemable once Marathon launches on March 5.

The trio of weapon charms pay homage to other PlayStation titles:

Ghost of Yōtei – Onryō Weapon Charm

Death Stranding 2 – Battle Guitar Weapon Charm

Helldivers 2 – For Freedom Weapon Charm

These can be claimed by PlayStation Plus members via the PlayStation Plus Exclusive Packs page at launch.

Launch Date, Pre-Orders And Collector’s Edition

Marathon officially launches on March 5, 2026 and is available to pre-order now. The standard edition is priced at USD $40.

Pre-order bonuses include weapon cosmetics, an emblem, and a player background at launch. Bungie has also confirmed cross-rewards for Destiny 2 players who link their Bungie.net account.

For collectors, a premium Collector’s Edition is available featuring a 1/6-scale Thief Runner Shell statue, a miniature WEAVEworm collectible and packaging inspired by Sekiguchi Genetics’ shell-weaving process.

Season 1 will expand the game further with two additional zones, Outpost and Cryo Archive, along with full faction progression trees and a ranked mode.

A High-Stakes Moment For Bungie

The February 26 Server Slam lands just one week before release, making it a critical first impression moment. Large-scale free access will show not only how many players are willing to try Marathon, but how the wider community reacts once hands-on impressions start rolling in.

Bungie has been running internal playtests for months, reportedly with positive feedback, but this is the first time the broader public will get to stress test servers and gameplay systems simultaneously.

With Marathon positioned as Bungie’s next major live service release following its work on Halo and Destiny, the Server Slam weekend may well shape the conversation heading into launch.

If you’re curious about Tau Ceti IV, February 26 is when the doors open.

After years of waiting and a lengthy delay, Marathon finally has a locked-in release date. Bungie has confirmed that its upcoming PvPvE extraction shooter will launch on March 5, 2026, arriving on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, priced at USD $39.99.

The announcement comes alongside a fresh gameplay trailer, full pre-order details, Collector’s Edition reveals, and even a striking new Marathon-themed DualSense controller. For Bungie, this marks its first completely new release since Destiny 2 launched back in 2017, and a major step into the competitive extraction shooter space.

A Modern Reimagining Of A Cult Classic

Originally released in the 1990s, Marathon was once a linear, story-driven first-person shooter. This new version is a complete reimagining, shifting the franchise into a modern PvPvE extraction shooter set in the year 2850.

Players take on the role of bio-cybernetic Runners, dropping into the dangerous world of Tau Ceti IV either solo or in squads of three. Each run challenges players to scavenge weapons, loot, and narrative clues while surviving hostile AI forces, rival Runners, and unpredictable environments. Extraction is never guaranteed, and every decision carries real risk.

Unlike traditional shooters, progression is tied closely to survival, information gathering, and long-term planning rather than simple match wins.

Delay, Feedback, And A Second Chance

Marathon was originally targeting a September release window, but Bungie delayed the game last June after mixed-to-negative reactions from its early alpha playtest. Feedback highlighted issues with cluttered UI design, gunplay that lacked impact, and pacing that felt slow compared to other extraction shooters already on the market.

Rather than rushing to launch, Bungie chose to rework core systems and rebalance gameplay. That decision pushed Marathon’s release back nearly six months, but it also gave the studio time to refine its vision and respond directly to player concerns.

The delay period wasn’t without controversy. An independent artist publicly accused Bungie of using art assets that closely resembled her work, including signage and decals. Bungie later confirmed the issue, and by December, the artist stated that she, Bungie, and Sony had reached an agreement that resolved the matter to her satisfaction.

Factions, Contracts, And Living Storytelling

The newly released gameplay trailer introduces Gantry, an agent of the anti-establishment MIDA faction, one of six major factions operating on Tau Ceti. Factions play a central role in Marathon’s storytelling, progression, and world-building.

By completing faction-specific contracts, players unlock upgrades, rewards, and narrative threads that gradually reveal the mystery behind humanity’s lost interstellar expedition. Bungie describes Marathon’s story delivery as discoverable rather than linear, with lore unfolding through contracts, Codex entries, audio logs, graffiti, abandoned systems, and environmental storytelling.

Everything you uncover is tracked in an out-of-run Codex, allowing players to piece together Tau Ceti’s fate between deployments.

Endgame Zones And Seasonal Progression

Marathon’s long-term structure includes seasonal content and endgame challenges. One of the first major endgame locations, Cryo Archive, will unlock during Season 1. Set aboard the UESC Marathon ship, the zone tasks players with breaching security systems, opening frozen vaults, and eventually confronting an entity feared even by the UESC.

Players will rely on faction upgrades, Runner shells, weapons, mods, and implants to survive deeper runs and higher-risk zones as the game evolves post-launch.

Voice Cast And Full Localisation

Bungie also confirmed Marathon’s extensive English-language voice cast at launch, featuring well-known talent including Roger Clark, Ben Starr, Neil Newbon, Erica Lindbeck, Jennifer English, Dave Fennoy, and many more.

The studio has also confirmed that Marathon will feature fully localised dialogue across all supported languages, with additional voice casts to be revealed closer to launch.

For collectors, Bungie has also revealed a premium Collector’s Edition, featuring a 1/6-scale Thief Runner Shell statue, a WEAVEworm collectible, embroidered patches, postcards, digital rewards, and a high-end unboxing experience inspired by Sekiguchi Genetics’ shell-weaving process.

Limited Edition Marathon DualSense Controller Revealed

Alongside the game, Bungie and PlayStation have unveiled a Limited Edition Marathon DualSense wireless controller, designed to feel like an in-universe object from Tau Ceti.

The controller features bold graphics, fractured shapes, and vivid accents inspired by Marathon’s industrial sci-fi aesthetic. It launches on March 5, 2026, with global pricing set at USD $84.99, and will be available in limited quantities.

Pre-orders for the controller begin on January 29, 2026, via direct.playstation.com where available, as well as select retailers. Availability may vary by region.

High Stakes For Bungie And Sony

With recent multiplayer setbacks such as Concord, expectations are high for Marathon. The extraction shooter market is already crowded, with titles like Arc Raiders gaining strong momentum. Whether Marathon can carve out lasting success remains an open question.

Still, after years of development, feedback-driven delays, and renewed focus, players will finally be able to see whether Bungie’s bold reinvention of Marathon can stand out when it launches this March.

Empress Caiatl, daughter of Calus and leader of the Cabal, seeks out Zavala for an alliance with the Vanguard. When Zavala refuses to kneel, threats are exchanged by both sides. Guardians must preemptively strike at her growing army while continuing to fend off the destabilizing influence of Xivu Arath.

In Season of the Chosen, Guardians will fight against Caiatl’s chosen warriors in Battlegrounds, a new matchmade activity for three players.

At the start of Season 13, The Devil’s Lair and Fallen S.A.B.E.R. Strikes will return from Destiny at the beginning of the season, with the Proving Grounds strike unlocking later.

In Proving Grounds, humanity’s champions will go up against the Cabal’s best to determine the Last City’s fate.

Season Pass owners will instantly unlock an Exotic bow called Ticuu’s Divination, which can charge and fire multiple Solar arrows with multi-target tracking. Season Pass owners will also get the new Seasonal Praefectus Armor Set.

Also coming in Season 13, over 25 Exotic, Legendary and ritual weapons will be dropping for all Guardians.

Today Bungie has released the next-gen versions of Destiny 2 on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5, a completely free upgrade for Destiny 2 players.

The new consoles will allow Destiny fans to experience their favourite game in glorious 60fps and 4K resolution (Xbox Series S will run at 1080p, 60fps).

In addition, anyone who wants to test their mettle in the Crucible on next-gen consoles can opt to set the iconic PVP mode to 120fps on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

Those who own Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles will still be able to play with friends who are on the next-gen versions, as Destiny 2 owners will be able to play across console generation in the same console family. Also, owners of Destiny 2 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will get free upgrades to the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5 version of Destiny 2 for all existing content.

Bungie is excited to bring Destiny 2 home to the newest generation of consoles, with a keen eye on what this may bring in the future for console players.

As part of Season of the Hunt, returning from the original Destiny is the fan-favorite Exotic Hand Cannon Hawkmoon. Work with Crow to reclaim and restore this storied weapon.

Return to the realm of the IX with the Prophecy dungeon. Face hordes of Taken and manipulate reality to solve intricate puzzles alongside fellow Guardians. What was once above is now below. And what was once Light is now Dark.

Bungie is proud to announce the Guardian’s Heart Initiative has raised $780,000 USD for Direct Relief.

Direct Relief is a multi-cause charity who support healthcare workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Launched on April 14th, 2020 (AEST) Guardians from all over the world helped to hit the Guardian’s Heart Initiative $700,000 USD goal last week and wrapped at $788,923.19 USD (approx. $1.2 million AUD) thanks to the generosity of the Bungie community. The Guardian’s Heart Initiative ended on May 13th, 2020 (AEST). Even with the initiative at an end, you can still support Direct Relief through their site here.

The Guardian’s Heart Initiative saw Bungie release a special Emblem, which was only available through a Tiltify donation to Direct Relief.

To support fundraising efforts, Destiny 2 content creators came together to promote Guardian’s Heart by offering themselves up for Bungie Bounties. Bungie Bounties are a community event where Bungie identifies a target player for other players to compete against to earn an exclusive in-game Destiny 2 emblem.

Direct Relief is a humanitarian aid organization, active in all 50 states and more than 80 countries, with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies – without regard to politics, religion, or ability to pay. They work with a network across the globe to deliver the supplies front-line healthcare workers need.

The Guardian’s Heart Initiative was just one of Bungie’s efforts to help people the world over. Previous examples are Guardians for Australia, Game2Give, Guardians to the Aid of Nepal, and more recently their annual Kilts for Kids fundraiser.
This has been a stellar year for games, making choosing the perfect gift your either yourself or the gamers in your life rather difficult.

Gaming giants, Activision, have outdone themselves this year with some great titles offering months of gameplay for all ages. From Spyro to Call of Duty, they have you covered.

To say Call of Duty is a gaming phenomenon is an understatement. Each game releases with day one-takings that would make a Hollywood producer envious.

This year’s entry, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, concentrates on the multiplayer game. Featuring gritty, grounded multiplayer combat, the biggest Zombies offering ever and Blackout, where the universe of Black Ops comes to life in one massive battle royale experience.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Activision has sci-fi fans covered with the Destiny 2: Forsaken- Legendary Collection. This epic package contains the original Destiny 2 game, Expansion I: Curse of Osiris, Expansion II: Warmind and the new chapter in the Destiny 2 story, Forsaken.

Whether you’re jumping into the Destiny 2 universe for the first time, or one of the millions of players seeking revenge for Cayde-6, the Destiny 2: Forsaken – Legendary Collection offers the complete Forsaken experience for new, returning and veteran players.

Again, Destiny 2: Forsaken- Legendary Collection is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Gamers young and old will have fun with the return of Spyro the Dragon in his remastered Spyro Reignited Trilogy. For a budget price veteran gamers and newcomers alike can enjoy three games featuring the star of the Skylanders games.

The package includes the remastered version of the original Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripo’s Rage and Spyro Year of the Dragon.

Featuring the same sick burns, smouldering attitude and scaled up in stunning HD, this is the perfect stocking filler for younger gamers, families and old school Spyro fans who want to relive their childhood memories.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Another classic Activision character returning with remastered adventures is Crash Bandicoot, bringing some marsupial mayhem with the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.

Crash fans can spin, jump, wump and repeat in the three-game pack. Players take on the epic challenges and adventures through remastered version of the games that started it all, Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back and Crash Bandicoot: Warped.

The Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is out on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One X, PC and PlayStation 4.

Activision’s Christmas line-up has you covered with gifts for gamers of all types and ages.

Destiny 2 has attracted legions of dedicated fans and has been enjoyed by millions of gamers around the world since launching in 2017.
