Chaos Hits Esports’ Biggest Brands

In a bizarre turn of events, several major esports organisations had their official YouTube accounts compromised this week, all to push a fake cryptocurrency scam. Channels belonging to ESL, BLAST Premier, BLAST Rainbow Six, and even the Esports World Cup were hijacked early on October 16, 2025, to broadcast a fraudulent “Memecoin” giveaway on the Solana platform.

However, the attack was short-lived, with the fake livestreams taken down within minutes. Still, the incident sparked confusion and humour across the community, especially after users noticed that all the compromised streams used an old clip of Gabe Newell promoting the Steam Deck,  now repurposed with a QR code for the bogus token drop.

The situation quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter), with content creator @aquaismissing joking, “Can’t believe Gabe Newell himself agreed to present the launch of the BLAST Solana meme coin.” The same user later pointed out that ESL and BLAST being hit together was “too convenient,” joking that “they’re the same company, I just can’t prove it yet.”

While the memes rolled in, cybersecurity experts pointed to a much more plausible explanation. The breach likely stemmed from shared access between esports production teams and contractors. If even one social media manager was phished via a fake email or Slack message, attackers could have gained access to multiple linked accounts.

How It Happened

All four channels showed the same fake livestream at around the same time, suggesting that one individual or coordinated group was behind the attack. The fraudulent streams directed viewers to scan a QR code linked to a so-called “Memecoin giveaway” on Solana, one of the most popular blockchain networks for crypto projects.

The use of Gabe Newell’s likeness, without his consent, was a clear attempt to make the scam appear legitimate, preying on fans’ trust in major gaming brands and personalities.

This type of YouTube breach isn’t new. Over the years, numerous creators, tech influencers, and even corporations have fallen victim to phishing schemes that briefly take over their channels to promote fake giveaways, NFT drops, or crypto scams.

Damage Control and Valve’s Involvement

Fortunately, the damage from this incident seems minimal. The fake streams were quickly removed, and affected accounts have since regained control. However, an update after the initial report revealed that even Valve’s official Dota 2 YouTube channel was later compromised to host a similar scam, indicating the attackers may still have access to certain accounts or credentials.

After what it described as a “less-than-ideal” 2025, the tournament organiser has acknowledged the issues raised by participating teams and promised to step things up, both behind the scenes and on the ground, as it prepares for the upcoming Hong Kong Rivals and next year’s circuit.

In a recent post on blast.tv, BLAST said it was “committed to improving our offering for teams and increasing the visibility of changes to the BLAST circuit as we close out the year and look ahead to 2026.”

Eight Key Improvements for 2026

The upcoming changes span everything from hospitality and transport to player facilities and staff support.

To start, BLAST is expanding its hospitality offerings, giving teams two additional reserved hotel rooms that can be purchased, allowing more staff to travel alongside players. The event’s catering system will also move to a voucher-based model, giving teams more flexibility with local food delivery apps and dining options.

The on-site experience will also receive a major overhaul. Player lounges will return for large arena events, creating a space for athletes to relax between matches. BLAST also plans to bring in new printing equipment for team staff to simplify match-day prep and expand the PLAYMA headcount to better support teams during events.

On the transportation side, the organiser is conducting a comprehensive shuttle service review to make sure team travel runs smoothly between hotels and venues.

Finally, BLAST’s Malta studio is getting attention too. The organiser plans to hire permanent local staff to improve facilities and logistics, along with reviewing studio accommodation after feedback from the recent BLAST Bounty Season 2.

The win caps off an incredible weekend for G2, who had already dispatched FaZe and FURIA before taking down Vitality in a rollercoaster best-of-five. For Vitality, it’s another crushing blow, as they continue their hunt for a title four events into the season. Their last top-tier win dates back to June at the BLAST Austin Major.

The series kicked off on Dust2, Vitality’s pick, but it was G2 who set the tone. They raced ahead with a dominant 10-2 lead in the first half, with every player hitting double digits. Not even Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut’s stunning ace clutch could spark a turnaround. G2 sealed the opener 13-3, with MATYS and HeavyGod cleaning up in style.

The stage is set in London as Vitality and G2 lock horns in the grand final of BLAST Open London 2025. After cruising through their semi-final clashes, the two European powerhouses will face off in a best-of-five series to decide who lifts the trophy.

Vitality were first to book their spot in the final after dismantling MOUZ 2-0. On Mirage, the French-led side punished their opponents for a series of slip-ups, most notably turning a full eco round into a momentum-shifting win. A 1v2 clutch from Lotan “Spinx” Giladi briefly kept MOUZ alive, but Vitality’s relentless A-site hits proved too much as they closed out the map 13-7.

Inferno told a similar story. Despite MOUZ finding early clutches, Vitality’s defensive half was airtight. Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut led the charge with a triple kill in the pistol round, and the team never looked back, sealing the series with a 13-8 scoreline. It marks Vitality’s first grand final appearance since the BLAST.tv Austin Major, with William “mezii” Merriman now one win away from lifting a trophy on home soil.

On the other side of the bracket, G2 rolled past FURIA with equal dominance. Their new-look roster wasted no time stamping their authority on Inferno, storming to an 8-4 lead at half-time before Álvaro “SunPayus” García and Nikita “HeavyGod” Martynenko put the finishing touches on a commanding 13-5 victory.

Mirage was tighter in the first half thanks to clutch plays from FURIA’s Danil “molodoy” Golubenko and Mareks “YEKINDAR” Gaļinskis, but once sides swapped, G2’s firepower overwhelmed the Brazilians. Counter-Strike fans, mark your calendars. BLAST has officially revealed that the BLAST Premier Open Rotterdam will take over the iconic Ahoy Arena in the Netherlands from 27–29 March 2026, marking the tournament organiser’s first-ever event in the country.

Rotterdam Becomes a New Esports Hotspot

Over the course of two weeks, 16 of the world’s best Counter-Strike 2 squads will fight it out for a share of $1.1 million USD in combined prize money and team payments. The action kicks off at BLAST’s Copenhagen studios, with 12 teams earning direct invites through Valve’s global rankings. The final four spots will be decided in open qualifiers.

Only six teams will punch their ticket to Rotterdam, battling it out live on stage across the final three days in front of thousands of fans at the Ahoy Arena. With broadcasts planned in over 100 territories and more than 30 official languages, BLAST expects a global audience in the millions, last year’s Open pulled in over 89 million views worldwide.

What Fans Can Expect in Rotterdam

This is more than just a Counter-Strike event. The Ahoy Arena, known for hosting international concerts and major sporting events, will be transformed into a hub of esports energy. BLAST is working alongside Dutch event organiser Friendly Fire, part of FKP Scorpio, to make sure the experience captures both the competitive intensity and the cultural impact of the moment.
