I think we all remember a time when we played Dungeons and Dragons, had to stop for a toilet break, only to find ourselves trapped in a magical worlds dungeons. UnEpic likes to harness this shared experience and presents it in game form and if the premise sounds dumb, the game runs with that and makes for a funny juvenile time.

From the outset and the cover art, it is clear what the developers main intention is. They have tried to create a NES inspired metroidvania title that feels like a game that could have come straight out that generation, if that generation had slightly more powerful graphical capabilities. Its super simple pixelated style is aesthetically surprisingly nice to look at and at times felt like I was revisiting a game from that era.

The gameplay also feels straight out of that time period and between that and the inventory management it is accurate to a fault. I am all for throwbacks and inspiration from classic style games but some things belong in the past and weird grid style item inventory belong there. It is not bad, just felt really old. When I play an older game I allow for things looking and acting a bit off, but in a newer game I just could not give the same allowances.

The humour on the other hand is so juvenile and silly that it is fantastic and about the only reason I powered through the game. Although some of the language and pixelated genitals have been removed for the PS4 version, it is still packed to the brim with stupidity and hilarity. Added to that is the silly premise of Daniel accidentally finding himself in a magical dungeon where a dark spirit tries to take him over and gets stuck in his body trying to trick you into killing yourself to escape. The humour is constant and will slap you in the face, but it makes the game worth finishing.

Unfortunately the game is about twice as long as it should be. Most of the things that annoyed me about the gameplay really only started to kick in after quite a few hours and once it kicked in I was unable to push it from my mind. If the game was around ten hours long it probably would have been a tighter experience and the gameplay would have stayed charming rather than getting boring and annoying.

All in all I definitely did not dislike UnEpic, it was a good game and they did a great job of capturing its old classic style and aesthetic. Unfortunately due to its length I did not walk away as happy as I could have. If had been shorter I would have been drooling over the charm the game has, but by the end I was bored of the gameplay and the humour was the only thing that kept me going. On the flip side if the super old style RPG gameplay is something that tickles your fancy and will not annoy you the way it annoyed me you could do worse than picking up UnEpic.

I will forgive you for not having heard of A Crowd of Monsters’ episodic adventure game, Blues and Bullets. Were it not for a review key falling into my inbox from the publisher’s kindly PR people, I wouldn’t have either.

And that would have been a shame.

Whilst episode one was released late last year, the rather extended wait for the second part is over. Now that first two episodes are available on PC via Steam, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, I think a whole lot of people are going to pleasantly surprised by this somewhat different take on the further adventures of 30’s super-cop Eliot Ness.

Former member of The Untouchable, Eliot Ness, having put away famous gangster Al Capone, has retired from the police and opened a diner, the titular Blues and Bullets. When and aging, and free, Al Capone asks him for help, Ness swaps his apron for a trench coat in order to confront his old nemesis, once again.

The game wears its inspiration on its sleeve. It’s a hard-boiled pulp-style tale in a classic noir setting. Heavily stylised, the game’s black, white and red pallet is very reminiscent of Frank Miller’s Sin City. I particularly like the red flecks in the lens flares- a tip of the hat to JJ Abrams, no doubt.

Blues and Bullets uses the same play-style as Telltale’s successful games, it’s a modern version of the old point-and-click adventures, but with some cover-based action shooting sequences thrown in. The game also draws on Rockstar’s L.A. Noire (and recent entries in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series), with players searching for clues and piecing together evidence to find leads.

The gameplay meshes together quite well and, with an intriguing setting, keeps you engaged.

The environments are a bit more three-dimensional than these sot of games usually are, the software-controlled camera sometimes obscured the path ahead, a tiny little moan for the system that, on the whole works fine and adds extra drama to the scenes. By-the-way, A Crowd of Monsters also borrows, quite successfully, Max Payne 3’s punctuated in-scene text to further stylise the game.

As nice as the game looks, though, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the presentation isn’t down to budget constraints rather than a stylistic choice. The muted colour pallet disguising some of technical shortcomings of the character animation and modelling. But it’s still a nice-looking game.

The world of Blues and Bullets starts off like a straight 1940s period piece, until you find yourself on a floating hotel, the repurposed Hindenburg. Taking cues from films like The Rocketeer and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, which in turn were inspired from the Republic serials of the 40s and 50s, the game should press all the right buttons for genre fans.

The first episode “The End of Peace” sets us up with a flashback to Ness in his hay-day, as he finally collars Al Capone. We then flash forward to the retired Ness in his diner where he gets an interesting offer that may have something to do with all the missing children in Santa Esperanza. There’s a lot to take in as Ness gets embroiled in the macabre case.

With the characters established, episode two, “Shaking the Hive”, has better pacing. Again we start with a flashback, fleshing out Ness as a good, but flawed, man. The case does take a gruesome turn- this is not a game for kids. This episode seemed to give me more story, more action and more detective work than the previous episode, thought I’d say it was about the same length, as around two and a half hours. Again, a great story, ending in a cliff-hanger that had me begging for more.

Blues and Bullets is an interesting noir-style adventure game in an intriguing setting, all tied up nicely with a gripping hardboiled detective narrative. The first two episodes have been a rather pleasant surprise and with three more episodes to go, now’s just the right time to jump on board.

Episodic stories are a dime a dozen these days with the number that Telltale release and the many that have followed suit. Sometimes it is necessary a la Telltale’s development formula, other times it feels forced. Blues and Bullets, which is being created by indie studio A Crowd of Monsters, is an episodic mystery noir style game which is fundamentally a point and click adventure game that blends different gameplay elements.

First and foremost it is a point and click adventure title. You will spend a lot of time walking around clicking items and clues, as well as choosing dialogue, but it also blends aspects such as investigating and shooting mechanics to bring some new flavour. The shooting mechanics themselves are average at best, with your character travelling along a path, then moving to cover, then swapping between two cover points and when you kill the enemies there you are moved on to the next section. You cannot reload your gun, the game just automatically reloads when you are out of bullets which I found mildly annoying. Though the shooting certainly is functional, it is not used often so it works well to create a break in standard point and click gameplay.

Character models and scenery in the game look very good but are not cutting edge, but this is easily overlooked by the colour scheme. It is mostly black and white, with a lot of objects being red, think Frank Millers Sin City series. It looks fantastic with that colour scheme and at times there are light touches of yellow but it is very rarely used. The shading in the black and white elements looks really good and the solid red used is very striking in each scene. This is used for generic items like ties and flags, but is most notably used for blood. The blood splatter from characters is exaggerated and in its solid red colour scheme it really does look fantastic. I cannot stress enough just how much I loved the aesthetics and it does so much to add tone and really helps enforce the noir style of the title.

The story itself is really quite interesting. Episode One drops you into a prison cell as a child, as she tries her escape. With no knowledge of what is going on and the dark colour palate it is a very grave mood to start the game in. Post this chapter you take up the role of Ness in his diner as he deals with life. Then a flashback chapter explains his past and indicates at why he is no longer an officer. This flashback brings us to the first instance of gun combat and really gets the story rolling. This scene is followed by Ness’ introduction to the case that he will be following and the game starts to get dark, graphic and weird, but interesting. Post the initial credits you have a final scene which comes back around to the start of the game which was very morose and twisted, but it certainly pulled me back to the start of the episode and had me itching to dig in to Episode Two.

Episode Two starts with another flashback, this time just giving a little more colour to Ness’ backstory. I cannot touch on the story too much without spoiling Episode One but it is solid, albeit not as strong as Episode One and a tad slower. It certainly has dark scenes and sets, but is not quite as graphic as Episode One. One thing that Episode Two brings to the table is first person scene that is cleverly implemented and very suspenseful.

Both episodes keep a good pace, there is minimal wasted time and the plot moves very quickly in the couple of hours of each episode. This is definitely a plus as the story is the most important feature in the game and it does minimal dilution of the plot. The weakest element of the game is the voice acting, which is not bad, just slightly above average. Fortunately this is another element overlooked easily as the music really setsa noir mood throughout the entire game.

Functionally the game operates really well, which is a nice surprise from what I have come to expect from episodic point and click adventure titles. I did not encounter a bug or a glitch throughout my playthrough of either chapter. A nice surprise in the gameplay is that some of the dialogue options come with a timer, but some are very quick, which means you have less time to waste pondering and you need to be paying attention. Added to this is the rare QTE scene with a much shorter timer than I am used to from other games. Honestly I really enjoyed it as it was used relevantly for scenes, sparingly to not become a main gameplay element and so quick that there was little room for error, but only punishes you by dropping you back at the start of the QTE.

I was considerably more impressed with the first two episodes of Blues and Bullets than I expected. The episode length hours is perfect being just short enough to do an episode in a session but long enough to have a lot of story with minimal dilution. Good graphics with a fantastic colour scheme makes it easy to be engaged with the worthwhile story, and now I am looking forward to the release of Episode Three.
