Sony Clarifies PlayStation Disc Re-Orders Will Continue Past January 2028

Sony has told PlayStation developers and publishers that they will still be able to order new print runs of existing disc-based games after the company’s January 2028 cutoff for physical media, according to a private partner message first reported by veteran games journalist Stephen Totilo of Game File. The clarification narrows one of the biggest open questions left by Sony’s public announcement on July 1 that it would stop manufacturing discs for any new PlayStation game from that date.

What Sony’s July 1 Blog Post Actually Said

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s original announcement, published on the PlayStation Blog, confirmed that physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028, as consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital. The company added that following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only, framing the move as “a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.”

Crucially, Sony stressed at the time that this transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format. That line left publishers guessing exactly what “no impact” meant in practice for reprints once the cutoff passed.

The Private Message That Clarified Re-Orders

According to Game File’s reporting, corroborated independently by Video Games Chronicle and Engadget, Sony sent a follow-up message through its private developer portal stating that partners “will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games”, meaning that a PS5 game released in 2027 or earlier will still be able to make new copies after January 2028. Engadget’s review of the same message confirmed that Sony shared a private message to PlayStation developers and publishers that said they “will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games.”

The message didn’t stop at reprints. Sony also told partners that it will “provide publishers with the opportunity to release new games at retail using digital codes,” with more details to come. That suggests boxed products containing download codes rather than discs could keep some form of physical retail presence alive for games launching after the 2028 deadline, similar to how Grand Theft Auto VI’s physical edition is expected to work. Sony did note, however, that the ordering process for discs will change in some TBA ways, without specifying how lead times, minimum quantities, or pricing might shift for publishers still wanting to print older titles.

Austrian Disc Plant Already Retooling for Microlenses

The reprint concession comes even as Sony’s manufacturing footprint shrinks. Reporting has noted that Sony has already consolidated disc manufacturing to a single plant in Salzburg, Austria, which is now retooling much of its capacity toward micro optics production. That plant is run by DADC, and its 300 staff have reportedly already been briefed on the shift away from disc-stamping duties, according to VGC’s sourcing on the facility’s operations.

That retooling underscores that while re-orders remain technically possible, they won’t be running through the same mass-production infrastructure that has served PlayStation discs for three decades. Smaller publishers weighing whether a reprint run is worth the cost may find the economics considerably less friendly once specialty, lower-volume production replaces the plant’s traditional output.

PS3 and Vita Storefronts Closing, PS6 Speculation Builds

The disc announcement landed alongside separate news that Sony is winding down older storefronts. Game Informer confirmed that in a separate post, Sony also announced that it will shut down the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Industry analysts have also linked the disc decision to speculation about Sony’s next console. Ampere Analysis’ Piers Harding-Rolls told Game File that “this pretty much guarantees that PS6 won’t arrive until 2028 at the earliest.”

For collectors in New Zealand and Australia, where physical retail has historically played a larger role than in some digital-first markets, the reprint carve-out at least means back-catalogue PS5 titles won’t instantly vanish from shelves once the 2028 cutoff hits — though how long local retailers keep stocking reprinted runs will likely depend on the same cost pressures now reshaping Sony’s Austrian plant.
