Halo: Campaign Evolved’s LASO Mode: Unlock Steps, Rewards and a Day-One Glitch

Halo: Campaign Evolved’s toughest challenge doesn’t sit on the difficulty menu from the start. According to Halo Studios’ own support documentation, LASO uses 17 specific skulls, and these skulls must be discovered in the campaign before LASO mode becomes available. Once that hunt is done, the mode unlocks in the Campaign and Campaign Remix menus, but a glitch discovered within days of launch is already letting players fast-track its hardest reward.
Halo: Campaign Evolved, Halo Studios’ Unreal Engine 5 remake of the 2001 original, launched globally on July 28, 2026, with early access for Premium and Collector’s Edition owners running from July 23. It marked the first time a mainline Halo campaign has shipped on PlayStation, alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam and Game Pass.
Why LASO Needed a Rulebook Rewrite
Legendary All Skulls On has existed as an unofficial community tradition since the earliest Halo games, but Campaign Evolved is the first entry to turn it into a proper, selectable game mode rather than a manual honour system. Halo Support explains that LASO stands for Legendary-All-Skulls-On, meaning Legendary difficulty with all skulls enabled, and in earlier Halo titles with fewer skulls, LASO was a community-driven challenge without official rewards or achievements, but as more skulls were added across the franchise, “All Skulls On” came to refer to a defined set of skulls rather than every skull available.
That distinction matters because Campaign Evolved packs in far more collectibles than any previous game in the series. The remake spreads a total of 42 Skulls across its 13 missions, and forcing every single one active would break the challenge rather than intensify it, since a chunk of the new additions actively help the player instead of punishing them.
The 17 Skulls Required to Unlock LASO
Rather than all 42 collectibles, the official LASO configuration draws from a curated list. VGTimes’ breakdown of the collectible system names the required set as Iron, Black Eye, Fog, Famine, Thunderstorm, Mythic, Grunt Birthday Party, IWHBYD, Boom, Eye Patch, Grunt Funeral, Malfunction, That’s Just… Wrong, Speed Limit, Pop, Temperamental, and Johnny Ammo Seed.
Halo Support’s own article confirms several of the harshest effects among that group. Once active for a full LASO run, Iron means dying in co-op resets you to your last checkpoint while dying while solo restarts the level, Black Eye means your shields will only recharge when you melee enemies, Fog disables the Motion Tracker, Famine cuts weapons dropped by enemies to half their ammo, Thunderstorm upgrades the rank of most enemies, and Mythic gives enemies increased health. Every one of the 17 stays switched on for the entire playthrough once LASO is selected, with no ability to toggle individual modifiers off mid-run.
MYTHIC Achievement and Trophy on the Line
Finishing the campaign under those conditions isn’t just for bragging rights. Halo Support lists the specific reward per platform: Xbox players earn the MYTHIC achievement worth 50 Gamerscore, while Steam players get the equivalent MYTHIC achievement on their profile, and PlayStation owners receive a Gold trophy of the same name. Crucially, none of that unlocks if a player leans on the game’s separate Difficulty Modifier presets, since the support page is explicit that using difficulty modifiers will prevent these rewards from unlocking.
That restriction is exactly what makes the current exploit notable to the achievement-hunting community.
A Difficulty Modifier Glitch Is Making MYTHIC Trivial
Within days of launch, TrueAchievements reported that Halo: Campaign Evolved’s LASO and Remixed Xbox achievements are currently ridiculously easy to unlock, thanks to a glitch that lets you turn down difficulty. Gaming outlet Geeks + Gamers, citing TrueAchievements community member GLL, detailed the exact method: once you’ve collected the 17 particular skulls, you can go to the Settings menu and crank up Damage Resistance to 2,000%, Shield Recharge Rate to 200%, Damage Modifier to 300%, and Melee Damage Modifier to 300%, while activating the Bottomless Clip option, which gives you infinite ammo.
The game’s own interface warns that active modifiers should block achievement progress, but that safeguard isn’t holding. Progress simply keeps ticking over regardless, and completing the LASO main campaign will give you 76% completion of the game, and finishing the three bonus missions will grant 100% completion. If tracking stalls partway through, the reported fix is to disable the modifiers entirely and manually collect the very first skull on the opening mission before continuing, which resyncs the progress counter.
Neither outlet nor Halo Studios has indicated whether a patch is imminent, and other trackers covering the exploit note it is likely temporary, so the window for anyone hoping to use it may already be closing.
What This Means for the Franchise’s Hardest Trophy
For a series where LASO has traditionally been a badge of honour reserved for a small slice of the community, formalising it as an in-game mode with a guaranteed achievement was always going to invite scrutiny over how tightly it’s enforced. The current exploit doesn’t change what a legitimate 17-skull, Legendary-difficulty run demands, but it does mean the MYTHIC trophy’s prestige is, for now, only as strong as the honesty of whoever is chasing it.
For Australian and New Zealand players jumping in via PlayStation 5 for the first time in franchise history, or through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the underlying unlock path remains the same regardless of platform: find the 17 skulls, then decide whether to earn MYTHIC the hard way before Halo Studios potentially closes the loophole.
