God of War Laufey Release Date Set for February 16, 2027 on PS5

Sony has locked in a launch date for its next big PlayStation 5 exclusive: God of War Laufey will arrive on February 16, 2027. Santa Monica Studio confirmed the date during a dedicated panel at San Diego Comic-Con, closing months of speculation over when players will finally step into Faye’s boots.

Faye Takes Centre Stage After Her Death in 2018’s God of War

Laufey marks the first mainline entry in the franchise where Kratos isn’t the protagonist, with the story instead following Faye (Laufey the Just), Kratos’s Norse wife and the mother of Atreus, who dies in the events leading up to the 2018 God of War. According to Sony’s own description of the game, death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning, as she awakens unexpectedly in a strange land after her death and discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk, forcing her to fight through the afterlife of the gods, the Everywhen, where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.

The game was first revealed back at a State of Play broadcast, where Santa Monica Studio debuted more than 20 minutes of gameplay footage. Sony’s Santa Monica team framed it as an overdue spotlight, noting on the PlayStation Blog that Faye has long been one of the impactful characters in God of War’s Norse saga, a legendary warrior and leader whose impact was left on the Nine Realms long before she ever met Kratos, with Laufey bringing her to the forefront to explore the humanity, strengths, and flaws of the person whose legacy was beloved in the minds of many.

Comic-Con Panel Ends the Guessing Game on the Date

The confirmation came during a San Diego Comic-Con panel dedicated to the game, where, as Video Games Chronicle reported, Sony confirmed that God of War Laufey will release on February 16, 2027, as Santa Monica Studio creative head Cory Barlog spoke alongside the series’ creative team about the game and its connections to what comes next. Barlog used the stage to explain his motivation for the spin-off, telling the crowd, as VGC reported, that he wanted to create Laufey to expand the world of God of War.

The reveal follows weeks of fan anxiety after the original announcement trailer shipped without a firm date. Santa Monica had already thrown fans a bone earlier in July when it confirmed, in response to worried questions about physical media, that the game would ship on disc, a detail that effectively narrowed the window given Sony’s plan to phase out disc production for new titles starting January 2028.

Christopher Judge, Deborah Ann Woll and Jack Quaid Return to the Cast

The panel also put faces to the voices, confirming a returning and expanding cast for the project. According to Games.gg’s coverage of the SDCC lineup, game director Ariel Lawrence and head of creative Cory Barlog were joined on stage by four cast members: Deborah Ann Woll as Laufey, Christopher Judge returning as Kratos, Jack Quaid as Phranque, and Perlina Lau as Rue. Kratos himself won’t be playable, but his presence in Faye’s story is expected to loom large given her stated goal of protecting him and Atreus from the afterlife.

Notably, Woll revealed during the run-up to Comic-Con just how long this project has been in the works, a detail corroborated by outlets covering the panel who noted the actress has known about her role in Laufey’s story for close to a decade, underlining how carefully Santa Monica has been building toward this spin-off.

A New Kratos-Led God of War Is Already in Development

The biggest surprise of the panel wasn’t Laufey’s date, but what comes after it. Kotaku reported that at the San Diego Comic Con God of War Laufey panel, Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog confirmed that Kratos is the star of the next God of War game, and that title will apparently tie directly into events from Laufey.

ComicBook’s account of the same panel added colour on why the studio is doubling down on its original protagonist even as it hands the spotlight to Faye, quoting Barlog as saying Kratos remains the “trunk of [the series’] tree” and “drives the franchise forward,” even though there are also “so many interesting characters” worth exploring. Game director Ariel Lawrence echoed the sentiment, adding that the studio “can’t not tell stories about the big guy.”

Beyond confirming Kratos’s return, details remain scarce. VGChartz noted that Barlog also announced the next Kratos-led God of War game is in development and will launch after God of War Laufey, connecting directly with Laufey’s story, but no release window, subtitle or gameplay footage has been shared for that follow-up yet.

Wishlisting Now, Pricing and Pre-Orders Still to Come

For PlayStation owners in New Zealand and Australia, God of War Laufey is currently listed as a PS5-exclusive on the regional PlayStation Store pages, with Sony confirming that pre-orders for God of War Laufey will go live closer to release, and players are encouraged to wishlist the game to be notified when pre-orders open, including information on pre-order bonuses and different editions. No local pricing has been announced yet, and Sony has yet to detail special editions, though the confirmed disc release should reassure collectors on this side of the world who still prefer physical copies over digital-only launches.
