Dave Bautista in Talks to Replace Injured Ryan Hurst as Kratos in God of War Series

Amazon’s live-action God of War series may have found its new Kratos. Deadline and Variety both report that Dave Bautista is in negotiations to take over the lead role from Ryan Hurst, who tore a bicep performing a stunt on set in late June and is now expected to be sidelined for months.

Dave Bautista is in negotiations to play Kratos in the adaptation of the popular PlayStation video game, with the role being recast after Ryan Hurst, who had been originally set as Kratos, tore a bicep while performing a stunt on set in late June, four months into the shoot, with the injury requiring surgery followed by a long recovery. The deal has not yet closed, but if it does, Bautista would step into one of gaming’s most physically demanding live-action roles just as production tries to get back on its feet in Canada.

Ryan Hurst’s Bicep Tear Forced a Costly Recast

God of War paused production immediately following the incident, and a couple of weeks later a decision was made to recast the role, with prep expected to begin in mid-August for a mid-October production start in Vancouver where the show has been based. Hurst, best known for Sons of Anarchy and this year’s The Odyssey, had already spent months building physically for the part before the injury forced him out.

Independent reporting from Kotaku confirms the scale of the setback: Deadline reports that Bautista is in early negotiations for the role with Amazon now, but no official announcement has come out yet. Should the deal close, Bautista would be re-shooting the four episodes of the show Hurst already filmed in addition to those that have yet to be shot.

Why Amazon Didn’t Simply Wait for Hurst to Heal

The math behind the recast comes down to timing. Ryan Hurst, who was originally cast in the role of the titular god in January 2026, suffered a torn bicep on the set of the series that would have delayed a return to production until 2027, ultimately leading Amazon and Sony to recast the part. With the show’s young Atreus actor, Callum Vinson, aging in real time, producers reportedly decided a lengthy production hiatus wasn’t workable for a story built around a father raising a ten-year-old son.

Deadline’s report adds that the physical toll of the role was a factor in Bautista’s favour. Bautista’s extensive background as a decorated professional wrestler would allow him to step into a physically demanding role such as Kratos with limited preparation given the tight schedule. He’s also currently finishing another muscle-bound role: he plays the villainous Kurgan opposite Henry Cavill in the upcoming Highlander remake, a shoot that reportedly required a fresh round of bulking up.

From Gears 5’s Marcus Fenix to the Ghost of Sparta

For gamers, Bautista’s name is not new to a PlayStation-adjacent role. Long before God of War came calling, the actor spent years lobbying to play Marcus Fenix in a Gears of War movie that never materialised. Developer The Coalition eventually gave him the next best thing: The Coalition confirmed that the “New Game+” update for Gears 5 will allow players to swap out the Marcus Fenix model and use Bautista’s instead. That 2020 crossover saw him fully voiced and motion-captured as a playable alternative to the character in the Xbox campaign, a rare instance of a Hollywood star being folded directly into a AAA game’s story mode.

That history gives Bautista a genuine gaming pedigree that Hurst, despite voicing Thor in God of War Ragnarök, never quite carried into wider fan culture. It also means God of War’s Kratos casting saga has now crossed paths twice with actors who have a direct connection to PlayStation’s Santa Monica Studio catalogue.

Two-Season Order, Vancouver Restart and the Wider Cast

The series retains its ambitious scope regardless of who plays Kratos. Prime Video has given “God of War” a two-season order. and, per Deadline, the ancient mythology-themed God of War, from writer, executive producer and showrunner Ronald D. Moore, began filming in February in Vancouver on a two-season order with the seasons slated to film back-to-back, which remains the plan.

The supporting cast is staying put around whoever ends up as Kratos. The cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok. Callum Vinson remains attached as Atreus, and the show’s premise is unchanged: God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye, with Kratos trying to teach his son to be a better god while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Bautista brings a very different profile to the role than Hurst did. As Variety notes, Bautista first broke out as a star in WWE before he transitioned to a highly successful and diverse acting career, having played Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe across six movies, while he also appeared in the first two “Dune” films from Denis Villeneuve. That résumé, paired with a built-in fanbase from Guardians of the Galaxy and Glass Onion, gives the production a recognisable lead to anchor a costly recast and reshoot.

No premiere window has been confirmed, and with four episodes reportedly needing to be reshot from scratch once cameras roll again in October, a 2027 arrival on Prime Video now looks more likely than the show’s original timeline. Australian and New Zealand viewers, who stream Prime Video’s slate day-and-date with the US, will be watching the negotiation closely given how heavily God of War’s PlayStation fanbase skews across the region.
