Moonlighter Free on Steam Until Aug 9 as Sequel Locks September 2 Launch

Digital Sun’s 2018 shopkeeper-meets-dungeon-crawler Moonlighter is free to claim and keep forever on Steam right now, part of a promotion running from Wednesday, August 5 until Sunday, August 9 at 10am Pacific Time. The giveaway, confirmed directly on the game’s Steam store page, coincides with the reveal that sequel Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault is leaving Early Access on September 2.
Free-to-Keep Window Closes August 9 at 10am Pacific
The Steam listing itself spells out the deadline in plain terms: “Free to keep when you get it before Aug 9 @ 10:00am.” Grabbing the game during the window adds it permanently to a Steam library, no repeat purchase or subscription required, and the current giveaway package bundles in the Between Dimensions expansion at no extra cost, per the storefront listing.
Community trackers on SteamGifts corroborate the same cutoff, noting that Digital Sun Games announced that Moonlighter would be made free to claim and keep for anyone with a Steam account, between Wednesday August 5th 2026 and Sunday August 9th 2026 10am Pacific Time. Neowin, reporting independently on the promotion, similarly confirmed that the Moonlighter giveaway on Steam is slated to run until August 9, with claims possible via its store page. Outside the window, the game reverts to its standard asking price.
Why Digital Sun Is Giving Away the Original Now
The timing is no accident. Neowin explained that the developer is letting PC gamers claim the original Moonlighter for free to celebrate the sequel’s 1.0 announcement. GameSpew framed it the same way, describing the freebie as a way “to celebrate the announcement of Moonlighter 2’s version 1.0 release date” ahead of the follow-up’s full launch.
It’s a classic pre-launch play: rather than simply discounting the original, Digital Sun and publisher 11 bit studios are removing the price barrier entirely so newcomers can get familiar with protagonist Will and the shop-by-day, dungeon-by-night loop before the sequel arrives. Neowin’s write-up walks through that structure directly, noting that players take the role of Will, an adventurous shopkeeper that dreams of becoming a hero, and while dungeon diving they find various trinkets and tokens they can carry back to Will’s village, where inside Rynoka village they can put items for sale, adjust prices according to customer feedback, recruit assistants, and even upgrade the little shop as business improves.
Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault Confirmed for September 2
The freebie sits alongside a bigger reveal: Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault is exiting Early Access with a full 1.0 launch on September 2, and for the first time it’s coming to consoles as well as PC. RPG Site reported that the sequel will exit early access and launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, having entered Early Access in November 2025.
The sequel picked up two major content updates during its roughly eight months in testing. According to RPG Site, “Greed and Glory” introduced the HEX combat path, Blo-Blitz dual guns, and the wave-based Greed Colosseum, while “Blob-Life Balance” followed with Bloblet shop companions, a stackable Poison Path, new weapons, and a Very Hard difficulty mode. The 1.0 build adds still more: Neowin reported it will feature a 3D world, expanded combat, a new progression system, and more, while the original’s popular gameplay loop of adventuring for loot and selling it for profit has remained intact.
A day-one demo of the sequel is already live across platforms, and it will launch into Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass alongside its retail release, per RPG Site’s reporting on the announcement.
Two Jobs, One Shopkeeper: What Made the Original a Cult Hit
Moonlighter first launched in May 2018 and built a loyal following on its split-personality design: dungeon-crawling combat at night, retail management by day. The Steam listing shows the game currently sitting at a “Very Positive” rating from 7,225 user reviews, with 80% of them positive, alongside a Metacritic score in the mid-70s.
That loop — raid, loot, price, repeat — has proven durable enough to anchor an entire franchise strategy eight years later. For PC players in New Zealand and Australia weighing whether to add Moonlighter to a Steam library this weekend, the calculus is straightforward: it costs nothing to claim before the August 9 cutoff, after which the storefront reverts to its normal listed price with no guarantee of another free-to-keep run before the sequel’s console debut.
