Super Bomberman Collection Adds Panic Bomber W Free on August 20

Konami will add another slice of Bomberman history to Super Bomberman Collection next month. The publisher has confirmed a free update launching August 20, 2026, that adds Super Bomberman: Panic Bomber W, a puzzle spin-off that never left Japan when it debuted on the Super Famicom in 1995.
What Panic Bomber W Actually Plays Like
Unlike the maze-based bombing runs of the mainline Super Bomberman games, Panic Bomber W is a falling-block puzzler built for head-to-head play. Konami’s own description, relayed by Gematsu, frames it as a competitive puzzle game for one-to-four players in which attacking opponents with spectacular chain reactions and Big Bombs, which appear when your meter is filled, is the core hook.
It’s the same basic idea Hudson Soft first tried with 1994’s Bomberman: Panic Bomber on PC Engine, before spinning it into Super Famicom, Neo Geo and Virtual Boy versions under different regional titles. The Super Famicom edition arriving in the collection, according to franchise wiki records cross-referenced with retro cataloguing sites, was released on the Super Famicom in 1995 in Japan only and never received an official Western localisation, making this update the character-puzzle’s first real chance at international exposure.
Eight Games Deep: The Collection’s Growing Roster
Panic Bomber W will slot in alongside the seven titles Super Bomberman Collection already carries. As Gematsu notes, the collection currently includes Super Bomberman, Super Bomberman 2, Super Bomberman 3, Super Bomberman 4, Super Bomberman 5, Bomberman, and Bomberman II. Konami’s own marketing copy for the set, cited by Nintendo Everything, describes it as a total of seven titles with 12 versions across Japan, Europe, and the United States, including the long-awaited localized versions of the unreleased Super Bomberman 4 and Super Bomberman 5.
That compilation shadow-dropped for digital storefronts back in February 2026 following its reveal on a Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, and has since built a reputation as one of the more thorough retro-Bomberman packages Konami has put together, complete with a boss rush mode, save states, rewind functionality and an in-game soundtrack player.
Free Update Lands Across Five Platforms
The August 20 update won’t require a new purchase. Super Bomberman Collection is currently available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam, and Panic Bomber W is being folded into the same package at no extra cost on all of those platforms. That mirrors how the collection has been supported since launch, with Konami periodically expanding its lineup rather than treating it as a static release.
The timing is notable for collectors too: a physical release of Super Bomberman Collection, produced by Red Art Games, is set to arrive just days after the digital update, giving Switch, Switch 2 and PS5 owners a boxed version that should already include the expanded eight-game lineup depending on manufacturing cut-off dates.
Why a 30-Year-Old Rarity Matters for Bomberman Fans
For long-time series followers, Panic Bomber W’s inclusion is more than a bonus mode. It’s part of a broader pattern of Hudson Soft’s Super Famicom-era experiments finally reaching a global audience decades after Konami absorbed the developer in 2011. Franchise archives note that the Panic Bomber sub-series stretches back to 1994’s PC Engine original, with the Super Famicom version reusing and remixing music and sprite work from its Neo Geo sibling — the kind of internal series trivia that retro compilations like this one are uniquely positioned to resurface.
For Australian and New Zealand players, the update should arrive simultaneously with the rest of the world given the collection’s existing digital availability on regional PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Steam storefronts, with no indication so far of a staggered rollout for the Oceania region.
