Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness Returns on Switch Online, Fuels Fresh Streaming Boom

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, the 2005 GameCube role-playing game once considered one of the franchise’s toughest and priciest collector’s items, is now officially playable on modern hardware. Nintendo confirmed the title went live in March 2026 on the GameCube – Nintendo Classics app, available exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2 owners with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.

The re-release has done more than let nostalgic fans revisit the Orre region. It has also kicked off a fresh wave of long-form playthrough content, with community broadcasters folding the once out-of-reach RPG into regular streaming rotations more than two decades after its original launch.

Ninth GameCube Title Confirmed for the Expansion Pack Library

According to Nintendo’s official product page, the game’s Shadow Pokemon premise remains front and centre: “Using Shadow Pokémon, an evil organization has unleashed a sinister plot of world domination. With Eevee as your companion, and with the help of numerous friends along the way, you must fight against terrible foes and race against time to snag and purify the Shadow Pokémon and save the world!” Nintendo also flagged one carryover limitation from the original release, noting on the same page that “you will not be able to transfer Pokémon from Game Boy Advance titles to this title.”

Nintendo Life corroborated the rollout, reporting that during the annual Pokémon Day broadcast, The Pokémon Company announced the 2005 GameCube role-playing title was on the way to Switch 2 in March, and following that news, the successor to Pokémon Colosseum is now officially available to Switch 2 users with an active Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, with Colosseum itself expected to follow at some point in the future. Game Rant separately confirmed the game arrived “just over two weeks after its release window was confirmed on Pokemon Day,” and noted it stands as “the ninth game to be added to the growing GameCube roster.”

Expansion Pack Access and What It Costs

Reaching Gale of Darkness requires stepping up from the base Nintendo Switch Online tier. As Game Rant detailed, while a Nintendo Switch Online subscription usually costs $20 a year, upgrading to the Expansion Pack bumps the annual price by $30, up to $50 a year, granting access to further console apps including the Game Boy Advance, GameCube and N64 libraries. Crucially, the GameCube app itself remains locked to Switch 2 hardware, meaning original Switch owners cannot access the Orre region playthrough regardless of subscription tier.

The GameCube library’s most recent prior addition was Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, which Game Rant noted arrived “via a surprise update” back in January 2026, underlining Nintendo’s steady, if unpredictable, drip-feed approach to expanding the retro catalogue.

From Collector’s Grail to Switch 2 Download

Before this digital re-release, physical copies of Gale of Darkness had become notoriously expensive on the secondhand market, a detail multiple outlets highlighted around the announcement. The renewed access via Nintendo Classics effectively removes that price barrier for anyone already paying for the Expansion Pack tier, turning what was once a five-figure-yen eBay hunt into a straightforward app download.

For Australian and New Zealand subscribers, the Expansion Pack upgrade sits within the existing regional Nintendo Switch Online pricing structure already used for Switch 2 accounts, meaning local players can pick up the GameCube app the same way they would any other Expansion Pack-exclusive title, provided they own a Switch 2 console.

Community Playthroughs Follow the Re-Release

The renewed availability has already translated into visible community activity. Shacknews’ long-running Twitch program The Stevetendo Show has built an extended, multi-episode playthrough of Gale of Darkness since the game’s Switch Online debut, with host Steve Tyminski documenting the Orre region journey, including run-ins with the Cipher Hexagon Brothers and a search through the sprawling Cipher Lab, across dozens of consecutive episodes broadcast on the Shacknews Twitch channel.

That kind of sustained, episodic coverage reflects how retro re-releases on Nintendo Classics apps tend to generate their own secondary content cycle: once a previously hard-to-access GameCube title becomes a one-click download, streamers and completionist players treat it as fresh, discoverable content rather than a museum piece.

Pokemon Colosseum Still Waiting in the Wings

Gale of Darkness’s arrival leaves its predecessor, Pokemon Colosseum, as the most conspicuous absence from the current GameCube lineup. Nintendo Life reported that Colosseum is expected to join the service eventually but has not been given a release window, alongside other still-missing GameCube favourites such as Super Mario Sunshine.

For Pokemon completionists on Switch 2, that gap means the full Orre region story remains split across two eras of hardware for now, but Gale of Darkness’s surprise-free, clearly telegraphed March rollout suggests Nintendo may be sticking closer to announced windows for future GameCube additions.
