Deltarune Chapter 6: Toby Fox Confirms 2027 Release, Calls It “Shorter” Chapter

Toby Fox has confirmed that Deltarune Chapter 6 is on track for a 2027 release, revealing in his latest newsletter that the upcoming chapter will be “a shorter, straightforward” instalment focused on a single strand of the game’s story. “I believe we will be able to release Chapter 6 in 2027,” Fox wrote, adding parenthetically that “Chapter 6 would be released by itself, in case there’s any question about that.”
Chapter 6 Described as a Tighter, Story-Focused Instalment
Unlike the sprawling, self-contained adventures of earlier chapters, Fox says Chapter 6 marks a tonal shift for the series. With Chapter 5, the team completed the last of the necessary setup for Chapters 6 and 7, meaning that from Chapter 6 onward there will be no more “wacky silly adventures,” with players beginning to see the results of that groundwork.
Fox describes Chapter 6 as “a shorter, straightforward chapter that focuses on one aspect of the story,” noting that because of this narrower focus, “many things are still not touched on here – in fact, it may surprise you what was missing!” The developer stopped short of detailing exactly what that missing content is, keeping the specifics of the plot under wraps for now.
Rough Draft Taking Shape as Fox Reworks Chapter Structure
On the technical side of production, Fox gave fans a glimpse of just how far along the chapter has come. He recently finished writing a few more sequences towards the last third of Chapter 6 and rearranging the rooms to fit the new structure. Once those adjustments are tied together, the team will be able to play a rough draft of the chapter from beginning to end.
What remains is largely the heavy lifting associated with any Deltarune chapter’s climax. Barring any major restructuring, the main things that will continue to need development time are the boss of the chapter and polishing cutscenes, according to Fox.
A Faster Turnaround Than Fans Are Used To
This progress builds on an earlier update Fox shared around Chapter 5’s launch, when he first signalled that Chapter 6 was moving unusually quickly. As reported by GamesRadar+ at the time, Fox explained that “this Chapter is easier to make than the others, so the development is going quite fast.”
That earlier newsletter also floated an ambitious possibility for the chapter after next. Fox wrote that “this sounds crazy, but it’s not unrealistic that some staff members may start working on Chapter 7 before the end of the year.” Nintendo Life’s Liam confirmed in its August coverage that this timeline still holds, noting that Chapter 6 is aiming for a release some time in 2027, and according to the previous update, Chapter 7 could be underway before the end of this year.
Chapter 5’s Record Steam Peak Sets the Stage
The update lands two months after Deltarune Chapter 5 launched on PC, Switch and Switch 2 on June 24, 2026, giving the episodic RPG a fresh wave of momentum. According to G2A News, citing SteamDB figures, the release gave Deltarune a major Steam boost, with SteamDB listing a new all-time peak of 291,816 concurrent players on launch day.
As with previous instalments, Chapter 6 won’t require a separate purchase. Deltarune’s Steam page confirms Chapter 5 is not the last chapter, with more chapters set to be added as free updates over time for anyone who already owns the base game — a model that has held since Deltarune’s original 2018 debut and one that continues to reward early adopters across every region, including Australia and New Zealand, where the game is sold on the same storefronts as the rest of the world.
Fox has built a reputation for candid, semi-regular development diaries rather than marketing-driven silence, and this latest newsletter continues that trend. With a rough draft of Chapter 6 reportedly close to playable from start to finish, and Chapter 7 potentially entering pre-production before 2026 is out, Deltarune’s endgame — originally mapped out across seven chapters — is coming into sharper focus for the game’s dedicated fanbase.
