Culdcept Begins Launches July 16, Nabs Famitsu Gold Hall of Fame Award

Culdcept Begins, the first brand-new mainline entry in Neos Corporation’s board-and-card hybrid series in a decade, launched worldwide on July 16 for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, with a PC version confirmed for later this year. Neos Corporation has confirmed that Culdcept BEGINS will launch worldwide on July 16, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch (digital only), and PC via Steam. The launch closes out a ten-year wait for fans of a series once described by its own developers as “Magic: The Gathering meets Monopoly.”
The Steam edition was not ready alongside the console versions. According to Neos Corporation’s own official product page, the Steam release is scheduled for Q4 2026, well after the Switch and Switch 2 rollout.
Dice, Territory and 400 Cards: How Culdcept Begins Plays
Culdcept Begins keeps the formula that has defined the franchise since 1997. As Noisy Pixel notes, players roll dice to move across a board, claim territories, and battle rivals using a custom 40-card deck, with around 400 cards across three categories: Creature, Item, and Spell. The result is a Monopoly-style movement layer stacked on top of a full collectible card game, where every claimed tile can be defended or seized through combat.
The story casts players as Kamur, a transfer student at the Royal Cept Academy. Kamur transfers to the Cept Academy, has his abilities recognized, and is selected for the Royal Cepter Guard Regiment, with the power of a Cepter beginning to awaken amid battles that threaten the continent of Bavrashka, a world built around stone tablets called “Culds.”
Beyond the single-player campaign, MonsterVine confirms the game offers layered multiplayer options. Players can test their skills in Versus Mode against AI opponents or jump online to compete against players worldwide, with online play including custom Versus Rooms and a new Quick Match feature for streamlined matchmaking. Switch and Switch 2 online battles do require an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
Famitsu Hands Culdcept Begins a Gold Hall of Fame Score
Japan’s Weekly Famitsu delivered one of the first professional verdicts, and it landed strongly. GoNintendo’s roundup of the magazine’s July 12 review scores lists Culdcept Begins at 9/8/8/8 from the outlet’s four reviewers, out of a possible 40 points total — a combined 33/40. Neos Corporation has since promoted that result on its own storefront listings, noting the game was awarded Gold Hall of Fame in Weekly Famitsu’s New Game Cross Review for its July 23, 2026 special issue, a distinction the publisher has echoed directly on its Steam store page as well.
Western reviewers have been similarly complimentary. UK outlet Game Critix called the release more than a nostalgia trip, writing that “Culdcept BEGINS is not merely a revival. It is a reminder of how unique and brilliant this series has always been.” The same review praised how the campaign eases newcomers into the systems that once made the series feel impenetrable, while still preserving the deckbuilding depth veterans expect.
Switch 2 GameShare, Mouse Support and Physical Editions
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition carries a handful of hardware-specific perks. MonsterVine reports that the Switch 2 edition introduces GameShare support, allowing up to four players to play cooperatively or competitively, even if some participants do not own a copy of the game, alongside mouse functionality for smoother, more precise control.
Two physical Switch 2 packages are also on the way, arriving after the digital launch. MonsterVine lists a Standard Edition at $54.99 with the base game and a booklet, and a Limited SteelBook Edition at $89.99 that adds a folding box, SteelBook case, soundtrack CD, and ten physical cards inspired by the in-game Creature Stone Tablets. Neos Corporation’s own site confirms the physical release for Europe and North America is dated for September 17, 2026, roughly two months after digital launch.
Nintendo Life also flagged a limited-time eShop discount ahead of launch. Purchasing before July 15, 2026 dropped the Switch version from $44.99 to $40.49, and the Switch 2 version from $54.99 to $49.49, with an equivalent 10% cut applied to the paid Switch-to-Switch 2 upgrade pack. Regional pricing in New Zealand and Australia typically mirrors these tiers via the local eShop once converted at the time of purchase, though neither region got a dedicated retail slot in the announced physical wave.
A Franchise With Deep Roots Down Under
Culdcept’s history in this part of the world isn’t new. The series’ most recent prior entry, Culdcept Revolt, reached Australian shelves in 2017 through NIS America after debuting in Japan on 3DS the year before, giving local strategy fans a small but dedicated foothold in the franchise long before this relaunch.
Culdcept Begins also arrives bundled with a nod to where it all started. RPG Site reports that the limited-quantity Deluxe Edition includes a remastered physical port of “Culdcept The First,” the very first title in the series, ahead of its own planned standalone release at a later date. That 1997 original never received an official English release at the time, making this bundled remaster a genuine curiosity for series historians as much as newcomers drawn in by Culdcept Begins’ friendlier onboarding.
