Xbox Picks Up Kojima’s Physint After Sony Dropped It, Deal Now Spans Film and TV

Hideo Kojima’s next game has a new home. Xbox announced on 9 September that it is now the official publisher of Physint, Kojima’s next-gen action-espionage title, expanding a partnership that already had the two working together on the cloud project OD. The deal doesn’t stop at games either: Xbox and Kojima Productions say they’re extending the collaboration into film and television.
The headline, though, is who Physint used to belong to. This was a PlayStation-published game until Sony dropped it earlier in the year, leaving Kojima’s espionage project without a backer. Xbox stepping in is a notable swing for a studio-and-platform relationship that only started in 2022.
Kojima fans had a lot to say once the publisher swap went official:
From a PlayStation game to an Xbox one
Physint was announced as a PlayStation Studios project, so seeing it move to Xbox is the kind of platform shuffle that rarely happens this publicly. Sony walking away in June left the door open, and Xbox took it. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma framed it as a creative fit, saying the company is honoured that Kojima chose to work with Xbox on Physint and that his drive to challenge conventions is the sort of creativity Xbox wants to back.
Not just a game deal: film and TV too
Alongside the publishing agreement, the two are expanding into film and television, aiming to bring new stories to wider audiences. That’s in keeping with Kojima Productions’ recent push beyond games, and it gives Xbox a foot in the door on whatever screen adaptations come out of Kojima’s worlds.
Where Physint stands now
There’s still no release date, and Physint remains early, sitting alongside OD in Kojima Productions’ pipeline. What’s changed is the logo on the box. For Xbox, landing one of the most closely watched auteur developers in the business is a statement in itself, whatever the timeline ends up being.
