A WoW Forever Beta Player Found a Way to Bypass the Level Cap – Here’s How He Did It

The WoW: Forever beta is supposed to cap you at level 20 for now, with the ceiling rising to 30 in a couple of weeks. Beta testers being beta testers, one player already found a way straight through it, wrote up exactly how it works in a Reddit thread that shot to 1,200 upvotes, and is now using it to race toward level 60 while the window is open.
What the player found
Reddit user Livid-Plane2903 laid it out plainly. Normally, once you hit level 20 the game simply stops handing you experience. As they put it, the system “checks whether the XP gain would push you beyond level 20 and blocks it,” so kills, quests and exploration all stop paying out. The workaround is one specific item that slips past that check entirely.
How the level cap bypass works, step by step
Here is the method as described in the thread:
- Level normally up to the level 20 cap, where your XP gains stop.
- Head to Mount Hyjal and loot the chests there. One of them can drop an XP potion.
- Drink the potion. It grants roughly 2.4 levels in one hit, which drops you straight at level 22, jumping you clean over the level 20 wall.
- Once you are past 20, the level-cap check stops working entirely, and XP starts flowing again from every normal source.
The original poster and a friend hit level 28 the same day and said they planned to keep grinding toward 60. In other words, one potion turns a hard cap into a speed bump.
Why it probably happens
Nobody outside Blizzard knows for certain, but the thread landed on a convincing theory. As commenter Drathe explained, the potion likely grants a flat chunk of XP that just happens to be worth 2.4 levels at level 20. Mount Hyjal is meant to be a level 60 endgame zone, so the item was probably built with high-level or alt characters in mind and is either missing a minimum level requirement or is meant to be account-bound for later. Another player summed up the disbelief: “The fuck do you mean it gives 2.4 levels? Not even retail has that kind of stuff.”
What people are saying
The comments are where the thread really comes alive. “Beta is the time to do stuff like this,” one player wrote, while another leaned all the way in: “They gave us the keys and told us to take it out for a spin. They should thank us for seeing how fast we can go.” Someone else framed it as an infomercial: “BLIZZARD HATES THIS ONE SIMPLE TRICK.”
There was also a genuine debate about whether this could get accounts banned. The consensus was no, and the reasoning was sound: this is exactly what a beta is for, players should report it through the in-game feedback tool, and nothing carries over anyway. “There’s 0 chance people get banned for this,” one wrote, adding there is a “99% chance their character either gets deleted or reverted back to level 20.” A few pointed out that everyone paying into the beta is effectively paying to test the game, though the pre-order does bundle in the Skyborne race unlock, early name reservations and 30 days of game time at launch.
What it means for launch
None of this survives to release. The characters reset, the potion will almost certainly get a level requirement, and the cap check will be patched. That is the point. A viral thread walking Blizzard straight to a broken XP gate is a gift, and it is far easier to fix now than after Forever goes live on November 4. For the players speed-running to 60 in the meantime, it is a fun window that closes the moment the devs read the same thread everyone else did.
