World of Warcraft: Forever, How the Community Reacted

World of Warcraft: Forever was the surprise headliner of BlizzCon 2026. Blizzard’s “third way to play,” a reimagined Vanilla era with new zones, dungeons, raids and a new Skyborne playable race, launches November 4 with beta on September 17, and the reaction was instant. The New Horizons cinematic trailer rocketed past 7,000 upvotes on r/wow in a day, the official feature breakdown cleared six million views on X, and Bluesky filled up with hype, jokes, lore theories and one very loud argument about a price tag. We pulled together dozens of reactions from across Reddit, X and Bluesky. Here is the community’s verdict.
The internet immediately lost it
Blizzard’s own feature list set the tone and the numbers: north of six million views in a day.

Creators and longtime players were in immediately. Streamer Jesse Cox summed up the cautious-but-hooked mood, saying he did not know if he was “back in it” but was “definitely going to check out WoW forever on launch.” Artist actualsailboat was already painting BlizzCon looks and calling herself “so excited for WoW Forever.” Over on Bluesky, rayadl joked about “disappearing into warcraft forever” and hoping to “maintain a schedule,” while klaybourne admitted, “I wasn’t expecting World of Warcraft Forever, but I’m ready for it.”

Everyone landed on the same two words: “Classic Plus”
The framing was near-unanimous across the press and the community: this is finally Blizzard’s answer to the long-requested “Classic+.” Windows Central Gaming called it exactly that, “Blizzard’s take on Classic+, revamping vanilla Azeroth in new ways.” Eurogamer bundled it in with the StarCraft and Diablo news as “a remastered and expanded version of World of Warcraft.” Not everyone was sure it made sense, though. Bluesky’s kallidorarho called it “a very, very strange thing to launch, especially alongside Classic,” adding, “very weird new take on a forever-MMO, I’m interested to see how it goes.” u/Screamlord_Sam kept it dry: “Well that’s certainly a choice you could make.”
The loudest demand: put this stuff in retail
The single most-upvoted comment on the whole cinematic thread was not about Forever at all, it was retail players demanding the new class and race combos for themselves. u/Round_Fill_8129’s “Yeh give me undead palas in retail!” pulled over 2,000 upvotes, and the reaction spread to Bluesky, where iamforsaken screamed about “TWO FORSAKEN PALADINS, BABY, Warcraft and Forever” and begged for it on “RETAILLLLL.” u/ZoulsGaming pointed out the knock-on detail that “undead paladin also means that it’s not even class locked for the faction,” while u/SlipperySlimyTerry40 was already adding to the wishlist: “Don’t forget haranir, earth elves.”
CMONNNN CMONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
RETAILLLLLL
The Skyborne race split the room
Here is where the mood turned. The reveal that the new Skyborne race costs $29.99 to unlock kicked off one of the busiest r/wow threads of the weekend, more than 700 comments deep. The sharpest take came from u/fitsu: Blizzard “coulda just sold Classic+ for $29.99 and everyone woulda been ok with it,” but instead made the game free “and then have a race for $29.99.” u/solidsuggester worried about the precedent, “launching with microtransactions inevitably means more are to come,” while u/MetalBawx noted Blizzard has “done this for every classic expansion launch.” u/minimaxir flagged the odd class split (Horde Skyborne get Shaman, Alliance get Mage), and u/imd1as offered a truce: “I will buy them, if I get a giant floating whale pet.”
The other half of the Skyborne gripe was the design itself. A lot of players think they are just recoloured elves. Bluesky’s vaknosh put it bluntly, and Reddit agreed, with u/IceDragon_scaly’s “and its just blue blood elfs” and a wave of “why won’t Blizzard just give us High Elves” energy from the likes of u/Miloslolz (“Blizzard dodging giving people High Elves like a pro”) and u/itsaltarium.
The visual glow-up won a lot of people over
Where there was almost no argument was the remastered lighting and world detail. keyboardturner praised the “comparison shots of lighting on the WoW Forever page,” noting the 1:1 scene shots “are done so well.” saphras got genuinely emotional about “the moonlight shining through the trees of Ashenvale,” calling the world itself “one of the most magical things about WoW.” Others zoomed in on tiny details, like haughtychicken rewatching everything slowly and loving “the scaffolding across the city.”

One of the most magical things about WoW is the world itself, and seeing it be highlighted and made so immersive in Forever makes me so happy. 🥲
The lore heads went straight to work
Within hours, the theory-crafters were dissecting the canon. Data-minded fan theredshirtguy spotted that “the World of Warcraft Forever roadmap is placed over a screenshot of Gilneas City” and dug into how Blizzard “kept stressing how Warcraft Forever is canon” and are the “untold stories” of Vanilla. The satirical therealnzoth account delivered the definitive lore verdict: “I HEARD MED’AN IS IN WARCRAFT: FOREVER. AND THE CANON HAS BEEN FIRED.”
AND THE CANON HAS BEEN FIRED.
And the jokes wrote themselves
Naturally, “World of Warcraft: Forever” as a name was a gift. Both jasonfanelli and emmapartlow independently landed on the same line: it “sounds like a threat.” equifax announced they would be saying “world of warcraft forever” at their wedding “instead of I do.” On Reddit, u/thechapstickbandit was “looking forward to playing this with my friends when we get admitted into a retirement home.” groxi grumbled that “Warcraft forever” really means “waiting forever to play Amani or Ogres,” and ethangach captured the crossover mood with “Every Destiny fan watching World of Warcraft Forever get announced.” The new first-name-last-name character surname system also set fans off, with marlam.in teasing “Character surnames on WoW: Forever” and iamforsaken losing it over a “FIRST NAME LAST NAME SYSTEM.” And Curse founder Hubert Thieblot offered newcomers the only honest warning about WoW.

Even the people who made it couldn’t hide it anymore
One of the more wholesome reactions came from inside Blizzard. Developer vapathyv could “FINALLY stop lying” about the secret project, revealing they had transitioned off the Housing team “to go be a QA Lead on WoW Forever.” Streamers piled in too, from Crendor posting his BlizzCon panel reaction to Taliesin & Evitel promising “a LOT to discuss” live from the show floor. IGN’s Destin Legarie weighed in, tolkoto joked about roping in journalist Jeff Grubb to “play World of Warcraft Forever with me,” and Wario64 did what Wario64 does, blasting both the cinematic and gameplay trailers out to the timeline.
Anywho a while back I transitioned off of the Housing team to go be a QA Lead on WoW Forever. If you’re at Blizzcon go play that demo, it’s been my major focus for months now and probably the biggest career high of my life
The verdict so far
If you boil the whole weekend down, it is the most classic WoW reaction imaginable: enormous excitement for the content, genuine wonder at the remastered world, a flood of jokes, and a very real argument about paying $30 for a race. u/kyach25 called the last part before it even happened, “Skyborne about to upset everyone lol.” Nostalgia is clearly a powerful drug, and Blizzard just bottled it again. Whether Forever holds people the way retail and Classic do is the November 4 question.
