Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter’s Legacy Patch Renames Items Ahead of 2nd Chapter

Nihon Falcom and GungHo Online Entertainment America have rolled out a “Legacy Patch” for Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, retooling dozens of English terms, item names and voiced pronunciations to bring the 2025 remake in line with the rest of the Trails series. The update, listed as Ver. 1.07, arrived across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam, according to the game’s official update page.

The timing is no accident. GungHo announced that a Legacy Patch has been released as part of the Ver. 1.07 update, arriving ahead of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter’s release on September 17th, 2026, with a localization update that aligns key terminology with other entries in the Trails series. The sequel launches on the same four platforms just weeks from now.

Why Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Needed a Terminology Overhaul

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is a full remake of Falcom’s 2004 original, and its English localization was built somewhat independently of the terminology conventions used in later mainline Trails entries that Western players had already grown accustomed to. That created friction for veteran fans and a risk of confusion for newcomers moving straight into 2nd Chapter. GungHo said its goal for the patch, alongside partners at Nihon Falcom, was to ease the transition between Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter and later Trails titles, prioritizing updates to English terminology and pronunciations based on how much they impacted continuity across the series.

The publisher framed the changes as an important step toward honouring the series’ expansive world-building and keeping the remake an accessible entry point for the whole franchise. That balancing act meant not every legacy line could be touched.

Renamed Items: Acerbic Tomato, Esmelas Tower and Archaism

The most visible changes for players will be in item and location names. Outlet Operation Rainfall, which reviewed the patch notes independently, confirmed several concrete examples: the patch updates multiple English terms used in the game to keep them in line with future titles in the series, renaming Bitter Tomato to Acerbic Tomato, Jade Tower to Esmelas Tower, and Orbal golem to Archaism.

Combat terminology also got a pass. According to the official patch notes, “Blade-Type” quartz names have been renamed to use the names of the status ailments they inflict, matching later entries in the series, while “Shield-Type” quartz names have been renamed to “Guard-Type” quartz to avoid confusion with the quartz Shield, formerly known as Arts Defense.

Voice Pronunciation Fixes for Liberl, Calvard and Auslese

Beyond text, the patch touches spoken dialogue. The English voice pronunciation of certain words has also been updated, including Liberl, Calvard, Auslese, and more. Falcom’s official notes acknowledge the limits of a post-launch voice fix: while most of the affected voice lines have been updated, a small number could not be revised and will remain as they are, with the publisher asking for players’ understanding.

The official changelog also lists French and German text corrections alongside general dialogue and grammar fixes. The Legacy Patch includes updated certain English voice and text to reflect legacy terminology, updated certain English voice to reflect legacy pronunciations, updated English UI and system text to reflect legacy terminology, updated French and German text for increased accuracy and consistency, and updated certain voice and text lines to fix grammatical errors and improve dialogue flow. Falcom further confirmed that the above changes will also be reflected in Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, meaning the terminology will now stay consistent across both remakes from launch day.

Steam Players Can Opt Out via the 1.06.3 Branch

Not every player wants the old naming conventions replaced, particularly those already deep into a playthrough or attached to the original remake’s phrasing. Falcom has built in an escape hatch, but only on one platform. For those who don’t want to play with the localization changes on the Steam version, players can switch to the 1.06.3 branch. That legacy branch is exclusive to Steam and is not available on console versions of the game.

Version 1.07 follows a steady stream of post-launch support for the remake since its debut last September, including an earlier update that introduced a first-person camera mode and interface-hiding options across PS5, Switch, Switch 2 and PC. That cadence of updates underlines how actively GungHo and Falcom are maintaining 1st Chapter as the on-ramp for a new generation of Trails fans heading into 2nd Chapter.

What It Means Ahead of 2nd Chapter’s September 17 Launch

With Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter confirmed for release on the same four platforms on September 17, 2026, the Legacy Patch effectively locks in a shared vocabulary across both games before players carry their save-adjacent knowledge, not saves themselves, from one chapter into the next. For newcomers picking up the series for the first time via the remakes, it removes a layer of naming inconsistency that longtime fans of the franchise’s PSP and PC-era translations had already flagged as confusing.

For Australian and New Zealand JRPG fans, both games remain digital-first on PC via Steam alongside physical and digital console releases, with regional pricing set through each platform’s local storefront. Given the size of the series’ back catalogue and its dense lore, aligning terminology now should make the jump into 2nd Chapter considerably smoother for anyone who started their Trails journey with last year’s remake.
