StarCraft Returns as an Open-World Shooter, Targeting 2030

StarCraft is back, and it looks nothing like the StarCraft you remember. At the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, Blizzard revealed a new StarCraft as an open-world shooter, not the real-time strategy series it built its name on. The project is targeting a 2030 launch.

It’s the biggest swing of the show. StarCraft has sat dormant for years, and rather than a straight RTS revival, Blizzard is reinventing the franchise for a different genre entirely.

From RTS to open-world shooter

The reveal trailer leaned into a grim, cinematic aesthetic rather than the top-down command view StarCraft is known for. Moving one of gaming’s most iconic strategy franchises into an open-world shooter is a huge shift, and it puts StarCraft in direct conversation with the shooters that dominate the market now rather than the RTS scene it once led.

A Far Cry veteran at the helm, aiming for 2030

The project is being led by former Far Cry director Dan Hay, whose background is squarely in open-world action, which tells you a lot about the direction. Blizzard set the target at 2030, so this is an early, long-lead reveal rather than something you’ll play soon. Treat the window as a target, not a promise.

What it means for StarCraft fans

For longtime RTS players this is a gamble, and reactions are split between excitement that StarCraft lives again and worry that it’s leaving its genre behind. Either way, it’s the clearest signal yet that Blizzard wants StarCraft back in the conversation. We’ll be watching for a proper gameplay showing as 2030 gets closer.
