Star Wars: Starfighter Trailer Ends Saga’s 49-Year Sequel Streak at D23

Lucasfilm used D23 2026 to give the world its first real look at Star Wars: Starfighter, and the footage confirms the next theatrical entry will be the saga’s first fully standalone story since the original 1977 film.

Director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling took the stage during the Disney Entertainment Showcase at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, to give attendees the world exclusive first look at the footage on the night of August 14. The catch for anyone hoping to watch along at home: it’s not going to appear online anytime soon, and was only for people in the room.

Kade Auberon and the fastest starfighter ever built

The teaser confirmed Ryan Gosling will lead the cast as the character Kade Auberon, joined by Flynn Gray, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings. In the sequence, Gosling’s pilot character finds a young man playing with a star fighter that’s decommissioned but was known as the fastest ever built, before Gosling flies through alien landscapes, including massive, skyscraper-sized geysers emerging from a planet’s ocean.

Gosling gave fans a taste of his character’s arc directly. “Kade is a guy from the wrong side of the galaxy, whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built,” he said. A new logo was also unveiled, and it features a distinct, retro aesthetic that harkens back to the original 1977 theatrical poster.

Five years after Rise of Skywalker, zero ties to the Skywalkers

Starfighter is a standalone movie unconnected to the Skywalker Saga, taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Levy has since added colour on the setting, telling reporters at D23 that “there is no sort of governing enforcer or order” at the time of Starfighter.

That framing matters more than it might first appear. After George Lucas’ original movie in 1977, every subsequent Star Wars adventure released on the big screen has been a continuation of something that came before, whether direct sequel, prequel or spin-off built on established characters. All signs suggest Star Wars: Starfighter is the first truly original narrative set within Lucas’ fictional universe since the first movie 50 years earlier.

Memorial Day 2027, the same slot as A New Hope in 1977

Written by Jonathan Tropper and produced by Levy alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 28, 2027. Levy made the timing personal on stage. “Our movie comes out May 2027. I’m honored that we’re releasing our film on the same exact weekend that the original ‘Star Wars’ came out exactly 50 years earlier,” he said.

It is a deliberate bet from Disney. After a string of Star Wars films and shows leaning on nostalgia and returning faces, Starfighter is being pitched as proof the galaxy can carry a brand-new cast without a single Skywalker, Solo or Kenobi in sight.

Star Wars games keep the saga busy before Starfighter lands

Gamers don’t have to wait until 2027 for a Star Wars fix. Star Wars Zero Company, a single-player turn-based tactics game developed by Bit Reactor, launches August 27, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, dropping players into an XCOM-style command role during the Clone Wars.

Australian and New Zealand players should note the worldwide unlock timing. Anyone in Japan, Australia, or New Zealand will technically be starting just after midnight on the 28th, thanks to the game’s single global release window rather than a rolling midnight launch.

Star Wars: Starfighter still has no official trailer for the public, no confirmed rating and no locked marketing calendar. What’s locked in is the date: May 28, 2027, fifty years to the weekend after Luke Skywalker first appeared on screen.
