STALKER 2’s Cost of Hope Trailer Opens Chornobyl Power Plant, Iron Forest Aug. 20

GSC Game World has released a new showcase trailer for STALKER 2: Cost of Hope, giving players their first proper look at two long-teased areas of the Zone: the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Iron Forest: ahead of the expansion’s August 20 launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Ukrainian studio published the video on August 6, describing it as an in-depth walkthrough of the “renowned locations” arriving in the DLC.

Chornobyl Power Plant and Iron Forest confirmed as Cost of Hope’s two new regions

Cost of Hope lets players navigate the iconic Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, once abandoned and locked away for decades, now calling stalkers back in, while also traversing the Iron Forest’s maze-like paths to uncover uncharted locations. According to GSC’s press release carried by Capsule Computers, stalkers will gain access to new, previously unexplored areas of the Zone, though reaching some of them may prove more difficult than ever imagined.

The new footage leans on atmosphere rather than combat. AltChar noted after reviewing the clip that stalkers tackling the new exploration challenges will find fresh story missions, though this trailer holds back on actual gameplay. Still, players get a solid look at the environments waiting for them come August 20.

Skif returns to chase a mysterious PDA signal

Cost of Hope again puts players in the boots of Skif, the protagonist of the core game, as he navigates events unfolding alongside Heart of Chornobyl. A signal on the PDA triggers the new storyline once the DLC is installed. Choices made throughout the expansion carry weight beyond the immediate story, and what players decide could ripple past the Zone itself.

Narratively, the expansion reignites one of the series’ oldest rivalries. Per an official description cited by multiple outlets including Windows Central and Pure Xbox, the story will “Dive into the iconic conflict between Duty & Freedom that will take dozens of hours to sort out and even that will not cover the full picture until you see both sides of the story.” DualShockers additionally reports that Skif won’t be going it alone, teaming up with returning Call of Pripyat character Zulu and a new ally named Mavka. Zulu is a member of Duty, a group of zealots that broke off from the Ukrainian military in the early days of the Zone to try and contain it, hoping to protect the rest of the world.

Free Update 2.0 and Unreal Engine 5.5.4 land the same day

Cost of Hope won’t arrive in isolation. GSC has confirmed a substantial free update ships alongside it for every Heart of Chornobyl owner. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s first expansion, Cost of Hope, launches August 20 alongside a free Update 2.0. The patch represents a meaningful technical leap under the hood, moving the game onto a newer version of its engine. GSC has not released a full list of what to expect, but the update will mark STALKER 2’s transition to Unreal Engine 5.5.4, an engine upgrade that should make the game less resource-intensive while also improving visuals in certain specific areas like glass rendering.

The expansion itself is included for anyone who owns the Season Pass or Ultimate Edition. Ultimate Edition provides all the Deluxe bonuses, including weapon & armor sets and Bonus Side Quest, plus a Season Pass granting two additional expansions and any future DLC. GSC has confirmed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 expansions will be released in installments, with Cost of Hope serving as the middle chapter of the “second trilogy,” alongside a future story DLC that will close out the arc.

Simultaneous PC and console release, no region locks flagged

Unlike some past STALKER 2 patches, Cost of Hope is launching evenly across formats. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope, the first major expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 on August 20, 2026. The Steam store page for the DLC lists the same date, and no separate release windows have been flagged for Australia or New Zealand, meaning local players should be able to jump in the moment the update goes live worldwide, in line with how the base game’s prior updates rolled out.

For a studio that continued development throughout the ongoing war in Ukraine, the choice of the real Chornobyl Exclusion Zone’s power plant as a centrepiece location carries obvious symbolic weight, and GSC has leaned into that history rather than shying away from it in its marketing. With the base game’s rocky launch performance now well behind it and a free engine upgrade bundled in, Cost of Hope looks set to be the biggest test yet of whether GSC can turn Heart of Chornobyl’s ambitious but bug-plagued foundation into a genuinely polished long-term platform.
