Sonic Classic and Modern Collections Land on Switch October 20 at $49.99 Each

SEGA has locked in October 20, 2026 as the release date for both the Sonic Classic Collection and the Sonic Modern Collection on Nintendo Switch, with each physical bundle priced at $49.99 USD and packing three previously released Sonic games apiece. The exact date came through retailer listings rather than a fresh SEGA press blast, but it’s now been confirmed across multiple outlets tracking the pre-order rollout.
The two collections were first teased back in June during Sonic’s 35th Anniversary Birthday Livestream, and both were announced during Sega’s livestream celebrating Sonic’s 35th birthday on June 23, 2026. What was missing then was a firm calendar date. That gap has now closed: the Classic Sonic Collection and Modern Sonic Collection will launch for Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2026, giving both of SEGA’s Sonic 35th anniversary compilations an exact release date after their original October window.
Fans have been arguing over whether six already-released games spread across two boxes is a real celebration or just a shelf-filler ahead of the holidays:
What’s actually in the Classic Sonic Collection
The Classic Sonic Collection brings together Sonic Origins, Sonic Mania, and Sonic Superstars for Nintendo Switch. That’s a loaded box on paper. Origins alone already rolls up four remastered Genesis-era games and a stack of Game Gear titles, so buyers are getting far more than three discs’ worth of content once you count what’s bundled inside Origins itself.
Sonic Frontiers, Colors Ultimate and Forces headline the Modern set
On the other side of the aisle, SEGA is releasing the Modern Sonic Collection for Nintendo Switch, featuring Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Colors: Ultimate, and Sonic Forces. It’s the tidier of the two picks, three full 3D adventures spanning roughly a decade of the series without any overlap or padding.
Both boxes carry the same physical extras. The physical edition will also include a special 35th anniversary reversible coversheet and logo patch. Beyond that, don’t expect new content bolted on: Sega’s announcement stops short of any feature list beyond the cover sheet and logo patch, meaning these are straight repackages, not remasters.
Why the same week also brought a Frontiers Definitive Edition
Here’s where it gets a little messy. Sega has also shadow-dropped Sonic Frontiers – Definitive Edition for the Switch 2 this week, and that’s a different SKU from the Frontiers copy tucked inside the Modern Collection. Sonic Frontiers is also bundled into the Modern Sonic Collection as the previously released Switch version, while Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition for Switch 2 is a separate product with updates and bonus content.
We’d flag that as the one thing worth double-checking before you buy. If you’ve already got a Switch 2 and want the best version of Frontiers, the Modern Collection isn’t it. Read the fine print at your retailer before you commit $49.99 to a bundle that isn’t the upgraded cut.
Physical only, no digital SKU confirmed
Neither collection has a digital storefront listing yet. The two bundles are physical-only releases, with no digital SKU confirmed for either collection. That’s an odd choice for a publisher that usually pushes eShop bundles hard, and it means anyone without a disc drive habit or a taste for shelf collectibles will need to keep buying the games individually.
Pre-orders are already live at major US retailers. Right now, you have a choice between picking up your Classic Sonic Collection pre-order from Best Buy, Amazon or Target for its full $49.99 MSRP, and the Modern Collection is stocked the same way. The Oct. 20 date itself first surfaced through a Canadian retailer: PNP Games was the first retailer in this latest wave to share the October 20 date on September 8, before the information spread through other gaming accounts and retailer listings.
Our take: $49.99 for three games each is fair value if you don’t already own any of them, but there’s no reason to double-dip if your collection already has Origins, Mania or Frontiers installed. SEGA hasn’t announced any AU or NZ pricing or a local retail partner yet, so ANZ fans will want to watch import listings and local storefronts as the October 20 date gets closer.
