Rockstar Breaks Silence on GTA 6 Leaks: “Heartbreaking for Our Team”
Rockstar has finally said something. After a week of Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay footage spreading across Discord servers and file-sharing hubs, the studio posted a statement calling the leaks “heartbreaking for our team” and asking players to hold out for the real thing.
“It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team,” the statement reads, “and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.”
A warning about spoilers, and an apology for the wait
The statement does not go near any specific leak. What it does do is warn that “the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers,” and ask players to “wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on 19th November.”
Rockstar also apologised that “everything has taken as long as it has” — both finishing the game and getting official material out. The Netflix extended look landing on August 27 has, by the studio’s own admission, “taken longer than we wanted to get it ready.”
What actually leaked
It started with the map. Then short clips of the protagonists, then mechanics, how carjacking works, how the world reacts. A group calling itself CyberLeek claimed responsibility, opening with a manifesto about “gamers’ rights” and a demand that Take-Two ship GTA 6 on physical discs rather than as a code in a box.
Take-Two has gone legal. It has managed to take down several of the Discord servers and OneDrive hubs hosting the footage, and filed subpoenas aimed at Discord and Microsoft to identify who was behind it. Microsoft says it is co-operating. Discord says it has not been served yet.
The scope is the part worth watching: the data requested covers hundreds of thousands of accounts that were members of those servers, not just the people who uploaded anything.

Our take
We’d push back gently on one line in that statement. The apology for how long everything has taken reads as genuine, but it also quietly concedes the thing that made these leaks land so hard: a seven-year gap between announcement and release leaves an enormous vacuum, and vacuums get filled. That is not a defence of leaking someone’s work. It is just the shape of what happened.
The more uncomfortable story is the subpoenas. Going after the uploaders is one thing. Requesting data on everyone who happened to be in the room is a different scale of response, and it is the part of this that will still matter long after November 19.
