Psychonauts 2 Turns 5: Double Fine’s Fig-Funded AAA Experiment

Double Fine Productions shipped Psychonauts 2 on August 25, 2021, closing out a six-year odyssey that began with fan crowdfunding and ended with Microsoft as publisher. Double Fine Productions announced the release of Psychonauts 2 on August 25, 2021, a psychic adventure playable day one with Xbox Game Pass. Five years on, the game’s road to release remains one of the more unusual financing stories in modern AAA-adjacent development.

From Kickstarter to Fig: Turning Backers Into Shareholders

Psychonauts 2 was announced at The Game Awards 2015, but instead of returning to Kickstarter, where Double Fine had funded 2014’s Broken Age, the studio turned to Fig, a new platform that let supporters buy revenue-sharing shares rather than just pledge for rewards. Double Fine sought to acquire part of its financial capital to fund the development of Psychonauts 2 through a US$3.3 million crowd-funding and investment drive through Fig, and the campaign raised nearly $4 million by the beginning of 2016.

Roughly a third of that total came from paying investors rather than reward-seeking backers, a split that made Psychonauts 2 one of Fig’s flagship campaigns. The game was originally slated for a publishing-only deal with Starbreeze Studios, but Starbreeze fell into bankruptcy in 2018, and by 2019 Microsoft acquired Double Fine as part of Xbox Game Studios while also securing the publishing rights.

Microsoft’s Buyout Rewired the Investor Payout

Microsoft’s arrival changed how those Fig investors got paid. Microsoft purchased Fig’s publishing rights for Psychonauts 2 for a price of $1,035,000, which provided a positive return to investors before the game even launched. Instead of a cut tied to sales performance, the campaign sent out a fixed payment amounting to a 139 percent return on each $500 share, rather than distributing payments based on how the game sold.

Tim Schafer, Double Fine’s founder and Psychonauts 2’s director, later described the corporate relationship in reassuring terms. He called the acquisition a “limited integration” with Double Fine retaining all control on the creative elements while leaving the financial issues up to Microsoft to manage, allowing the studio to finish the game without budgetary crunch. That framing became a template other Xbox-owned studios would later point to.

A Mental Health Warning Screen and a Golden Joystick

Beyond the money, Psychonauts 2 stood out for opening with a content advisory rather than a legal disclaimer. It warns that the game depicts addiction, PTSD, panic attacks, anxiety, and delusions in an artistic manner. Double Fine leaned on outside expertise to get that tone right. For Psychonauts 2, Double Fine worked closely with mental health experts like Take This to offer a more sensitive depiction of common struggles.

Critics and awards bodies rewarded that approach. Psychonauts 2 secured its position as the Xbox Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards in 2021. Months later, it won the award for Writing in a Comedy at the NAVGTR awards, finishing with five total wins that made Double Fine Productions the second-most-awarded studio behind Insomniac Games.

Five Years Later: A Documentary and a Studio Still Standing

Psychonauts 2 reached its remaining platforms the following spring. It arrived on PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on August 25, 2021, with Linux and macOS versions following on May 24, 2022. Double Fine and 2 Player Productions later turned the whole saga into a feature-length record of the making of the game. Double Fine and 2 Player Productions released PsychOdyssey, a 22-hour documentary on the making of Psychonauts 2, in February 2023.

Double Fine itself turned 25 last year and marked the milestone with retrospective videos rather than any flashy relaunch. The studio celebrated with a series of videos hosted by Ashley Esqueda, looking back on a selection of titles from the company’s history. Psychonauts 2 remains the clearest example of that history: a crowdfunded, investor-backed sequel that survived a publisher’s bankruptcy and a corporate buyout to reach players on schedule five years ago this week.
