Pokémon Pokopia: 5M Sales Mean Roughly 1 in 5 Switch 2 Owners Bought It

Pokémon Pokopia has now sold more than five million copies worldwide, and when that figure is set against Nintendo’s own hardware numbers, it works out to roughly one in every five Switch 2 owners having picked up the game. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company confirmed on August 13 that the game’s cumulative global sales, including both physical packages and digital downloads, have exceeded 5 million units, a milestone reached just over four months after its March release.
The math behind that “1 in 5” figure comes straight from Nintendo’s own disclosures. The company’s most recent financial results, published August 6, put cumulative Switch 2 hardware sales at 23.68 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2026, according to Nintendo Life’s breakdown of the earnings report, which noted Nintendo sold a total of 9.46 million units for the Switch 2 during the quarter, representing an increase of 9.2% year-on-year, with Pokémon Pokopia flagged as a big winner, with the game shifting 1.27 million units during the quarter. Divide five million Pokopia sales by that 23.68 million install base and the resulting share of Switch 2 owners lands right around 21 percent: a slight tick up from the roughly 20 percent estimate that had circulated in May, when the console’s install base sat closer to 20 million.
A Switch 2 Exclusive Doing Heavy Lifting for the Console
Pokémon Pokopia launched exclusively on Nintendo’s newest hardware on March 5, and the numbers suggest it has become one of the console’s genuine system sellers. Nintendo’s official news release at launch confirmed global sales of Pokémon Pokopia for the Nintendo Switch 2 system have surpassed 2.2 million units (including 1 million units sold in Japan) in the first four days since its worldwide launch on March 5, 2026. That opening alone outpaced several other Switch 2 exclusives; by comparison, other reporting on the same earnings cycle noted Kirby Air Riders has sold 1.76 million units, Donkey Kong Bananza has shifted 4.25 million units at that point.
Nintendo Everything’s coverage of the milestone confirmed the timeline directly from the companies’ statement, reporting that since its initial release, global sales have surpassed five million copies, a feat accomplished just over four months after launch. VGChartz, citing the same joint press release, added that global sales of the Pokémon Pokopia game have surpassed 5 million units across physical and digital versions, just over four months after its launch on March 5, 2026, and the game is available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Where Pokopia Sits Among Switch 2 and Pokémon Spin-Off Rankings
Five million units is enough to make Pokémon Pokopia one of the best-performing games on the platform to date, trailing only Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza among Switch 2 titles based on figures reported around Nintendo’s spring financial update. It is also closing in on becoming one of the best-selling Pokémon spin-offs of all time; Nintendo Wire, drawing on Serebii founder Joe Merrick’s compiled sales list, reported that as of May, the list reveals that Pokopia is already the fifth bestselling game among them, sitting behind the Mystery Dungeon Red/Blue duo that leads the category.
Nintendo itself has framed the game’s audience as unusually broad for the franchise. In the companies’ statement accompanying an earlier sales update, Nintendo said Pokémon Pokopia is being picked up by a broad range of players regardless of gender, and many are using the features, such as GameShare, that are exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, adding that by continuing to release these kinds of compelling titles for Nintendo Switch 2, we aim to convey the appeal of the platform to our consumers who play on Nintendo Switch.
Expansion Pass DLC Keeps the Momentum Going
Nintendo isn’t treating Pokopia as a finished product. A free update has already added new underwater exploration content, with Inven Global reporting a free update has also been released, adding a ‘Diving’ skill that allows Metamon to explore underwater, and to use this skill, players must install the update and reach a certain level of progress in the game. Beyond the free content, Nintendo Everything confirmed the paid roadmap extends well into next year, noting part 2 of the Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass paid DLC will release in late 2026, introducing accessories for Pokémon to wear, while part 3 is scheduled for release in 2027, and the Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass is available to purchase on Nintendo eShop.
What the Numbers Mean Heading Into a Price Rise
The timing matters for Nintendo as it heads into a tougher stretch for hardware growth. Nintendo Life’s coverage of the August financial results noted the platform holder’s own outlook has cooled slightly for the console’s second year, with the report stating first-quarter sales for Nintendo Switch 2 did not reach the level seen in the same quarter of last fiscal year, which was when the console launched, however, for a hardware system in its second year, sales compare favorably to the adoption trajectory of Nintendo Switch. The same report flagged that a price increase is also due to take effect in the west on 1st September 2026, which could make software attach numbers like Pokopia’s even more important for Nintendo’s bottom line over the coming quarters.
For Switch 2 owners weighing whether to finally pick up the cozy life sim, the one-in-five adoption rate is a strong signal that Pokopia has crossed over from Pokémon faithful into the console’s broader cozy-gaming audience, filling something of the gap left by the long wait for a new mainline Animal Crossing.
