Overwatch Reveals Sombra Support and Roadhog Reworks for Season 5

Overwatch Season 5 will move Sombra from Damage to Support and give Roadhog a major Tank rework when it launches on 6 October 2026. Blizzard’s first full look at their new kits shows Sombra gaining direct healing and ally utility, while Roadhog gets a way to absorb enemy projectiles without losing Chain Hook or Take a Breather.
The two reworks are arriving alongside Doctrine, the vampire-inspired Support Hero 54, who is already playable through a limited Hero Trial ending 14 September. Season 5 will also conclude the Reign of Talon story arc and introduce Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a new Escort map set at an Icelandic volcano prison.

Sombra’s Support Rework Keeps Her Hacker Identity
Sombra’s move to Support is much more than a role change. Her reworked ability kit gives her two separate ways to heal allies while keeping the mobility, hacking and disruption associated with the character.
- Machine Pistol: Sombra keeps her short-range automatic weapon.
- Hotfix: Heals an ally over time for a set amount of health. Hotfix can also briefly hack health packs and most enemy deployables.
- Cyberspace: Launches a projectile that explodes on impact and creates a zone that weakens enemies while healing allies.
- Translocator: Throws a beacon that Sombra can teleport to. She becomes stealthed for a short period after teleporting.
- EMP: Deals damage to nearby enemies based on a percentage of their current health, hacks them and destroys nearby barriers.
- Conspirator: Reveals enemies whose ultimates are fully charged.
- Tactician: Allows Sombra to store excess ultimate charge.

💉Hotfix(Hacking Healing)
Now can heal allies through hacking.

Her perks push the Support side of the kit further. Life Hack makes EMP apply Hotfix to nearby allies, while CTRL ALT ESC starts passive health regeneration when Sombra uses Translocator below half health. Data Packet reduces Hotfix’s main cooldown after hacking health packs, and Cybersecurity doubles Cyberspace’s healing on allies below half health.
The result is still recognisably Sombra. She can disappear, reposition, disrupt enemies and interfere with deployables, but those actions are now paired with actual team sustain rather than leaving her value almost entirely on the offensive side.
Roadhog Gains Projectile Absorption and Team Healing
Roadhog remains a Tank and keeps the abilities most closely associated with him, but Blizzard is adding defensive tools that let him contribute more directly to teammates.
- Scrap Gun: A short-range shotgun that fires in two bursts.
- Trash Compactor: Absorbs enemy projectiles and compresses them into an explosive ball of scrap.
- Chain Hook: Drags a targeted enemy towards Roadhog.
- Take a Breather: Heals Roadhog and reduces the damage he takes.
- Whole Hog: Damages and knocks back enemies in front of him.
- Bruiser: Gives Roadhog resistance to critical hits and increased movement speed while he is below half health.

Roadhog’s perks add more interaction between those abilities. Scrap Hook reloads ammo when Chain Hook connects, while Here, Piggy Piggy reduces Hook’s cooldown during Whole Hog. Hogdrogen Exposure lets Take a Breather heal nearby allies, and Toxic Exhaust slows and damages enemies standing in front of Roadhog while he is using the ability.
Trash Compactor and the new healing option are the biggest changes to how Roadhog can help the rest of his team. His close-range pressure and Hook remain intact, but the rework gives him more to do when he is protecting teammates rather than simply looking for a pick.
Doctrine Joins the Support Roster in Season 5
Doctrine is the other major Support addition. Blizzard describes the new hero as its take on a vampire fantasy, with Doctrine manipulating lifeforce through a sceptre, infusions and bat-like drones. He is allied with Doomfist in the Reign of Talon storyline, which reaches its conclusion during Season 5.

That story also leads into Watchpoint: Grímsvötn. The Escort map is set at the remote Icelandic prison where Doomfist breaks Doctrine free, tying the new battlefield directly to the season’s narrative rather than treating it as a separate location.
Blizzard has also confirmed the return of Dokiwatch and teased Hero 55 as the next part of Overwatch’s future. A new Overwatch Spotlight is scheduled for February 2027, when the studio plans to lay out its roadmap for the year ahead.
