Modern Warfare 4 Switch 2 Boxed Copy Is Just a Download Code, Retailer Says

Physical copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 will not contain a cartridge or a Game-Key Card at all, just a printed download code, according to Canadian retailer and distributor Video Games Plus. The claim, posted by VGP on social media and picked up independently by My Nintendo News, GoNintendo and Nintendo Life, describes the boxed release as a straightforward “code-in-box” product with nothing else inside.

VGP: “Just a Box With a Download Code”

Video Games Plus, which is North America’s premier independent videogame retailer and distributor, has shared the unfortunate news that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 will ship as a code-in-box release. That’s right, no traditional cartridge or even a Game-Key Card, but simply a code in the box to redeem.

The retailer framed the move as part of a wider pattern. The retailer’s post listed GTA VI on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S alongside Diablo IV and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 as examples of code-in-box releases. VGP said its own policy is to skip such products entirely: “And if it’s just a box with a download code inside, VGP won’t be carrying it. We believe physical games should actually be physical games.”

GoNintendo, corroborating the claim independently, described the same outcome in plainer terms. Those going with boxed copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 will be getting a code-in-box, so not even a Game-Key Card, meaning a physical box to display with nothing but a piece of paper inside with an eShop code.

No Cartridge, No Game-Key Card, Just Paper

The distinction matters to Switch owners. Nintendo has increasingly leaned on Game-Key Cards for large third-party releases, physical carts that hold a licence but still require a full eShop download. Modern Warfare 4 skips even that step, shipping a box that functions purely as packaging for a code.

Nintendo Life, reporting the same VGP information separately, confirmed the retailer’s stance on stocking the game. According to the North American physical video game distributor, the Switch 2 version of MW4 will be a “code-in-box” release when it arrives this October. As it’s “just a box with a download code inside”, VGP says it won’t be carrying the product.

Activision has not issued its own statement addressing packaging contents. Nintendo Life noted there is currently no official breakdown of how installation will work on the console, though the file will need to be pulled down in full regardless of which box format buyers choose.

Digital Legends Built the Native Switch 2 Port

The packaging question comes as the Switch 2 version otherwise closes in on launch. Activision confirmed that Infinity Ward partnered with Spanish studio Digital Legends Entertainment, previously behind Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, to build a native Switch 2 version rather than a cloud-streamed port. Infinity Ward technical designer Jack Hoppus discussed the collaboration at the CODNext Showcase 2026, saying of Digital Legends, “We’ve been working alongside Digital Legends as partners, getting this working natively on the Nintendo Switch [2]. They’ve been killing it,” according to Nintendo Insider.

The Switch 2 build supports cross-play, cross-progression and optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, and it marks the first mainline Call of Duty on Nintendo hardware since Ghosts arrived on Wii U in 2013, a 13-year gap. That absence has made the code-in-box detail sting more for collectors who hoped a genuine Nintendo comeback would come with a genuine cartridge.

Open Beta Already Running Before October Launch

Switch 2 owners have had a preview of the finished product already. Nintendo Insider reported that the console’s slice of the open beta runs from Friday 28 August to Tuesday 1 September 2026, ahead of the full worldwide release confirmed for 23 October 2026, at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop. Early hands-on footage circulating from that testing window showed the game running at a largely stable 60 frames per second on the console.

Whether Activision changes course before boxes ship in October remains an open question. For now, anyone chasing a physical Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 should expect to redeem a code rather than insert a cartridge, and to check with individual retailers on whether they stock the format at all.
