Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls Patch Cuts CPU Load, Ends Sudden FPS Crashes on PC

Arc System Works has rolled out a maintenance patch for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls that specifically targets the PC version’s rocky launch performance, cutting CPU load and squashing a bug that was causing sudden frame-rate crashes mid-match. The update, pushed live on August 10, arrives less than a week after the 4v4 tag-team fighter’s troubled debut on Steam and PS5.
What the August 10 Patch Actually Changes on PC
Developers confirmed on the game’s official Discord and social channels that the update reduces overall CPU usage through several targeted fixes. According to the patch notes cited by EventHubs, one culprit was an issue where the CPU ran high throughout the start up process, alongside an issue where additional load on the system was being created due to periodic audio processing during matches.
The second major fix addressed the random performance crashes players had been reporting since launch. The developers identified an issue where the game was regularly checking for available audio inputs, and these unnecessary checks could cause sudden frame drops and performance drops. Arc System Works also said it improved backend crash reporting to help it track down further issues faster, per the patch notes Shacknews reproduced from the studio’s social post.
Kotaku, reporting independently on the same rollout, described the fix in similar terms, noting the update specifically targets performance troubles, reducing the overall CPU load that was causing online lag and general chugging, as well as targeting a bug that has caused performance drops during actual fights.
From Uninstalls to “Recommended”: How Players Are Reacting
The scale of the turnaround matters because the launch week was genuinely brutal for PC owners. Kotaku noted that prominent fighting game community streamer Maximilian Dood uninstalled the game live on air after struggling with the port, a moment GosuGamers also referenced when detailing how the game’s Steam standing collapsed.
GosuGamers reported that Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls had fallen from a Mixed rating on Steam to Mostly Negative, with only 38% of user reviews positive at one point. Following the August 10 patch, that sentiment appears to be shifting. One Steam reviewer quoted by the outlet, Rayden Belmont, wrote that the game “launched in a near unplayable bad state,” but said the roughly 10GB update released on August 10 fixed things for them, prompting them to switch their review back to Recommended and call the game “one of the best fighting games we’ve had.”
Other players reported similar relief. A Reddit user named CattensForSale wrote simply that “It fixed the stuttering for me!” according to GosuGamers, with other Redditors echoing that CPU usage had dropped and matches now run smoothly. TechPowerUp, citing threads on r/MarvelTokon, reported that some gamers report substantial performance jumps on reasonably powerful desktop builds, which ended up taking the game from a choppy mess with lows closing in on under 50 FPS to a solid 60+ FPS experience, especially when upscaling options like DLSS are active.
Older Hardware Still Struggling, Arc System Works Says More Fixes Coming
The patch is not a universal cure. TechPowerUp cautioned that there are still reports of low performance, and even performance regressions, from users with older graphics cards, but those appear to be mostly isolated issues, and Arc System Works has promised that optimization will continue going forward. GosuGamers likewise noted lingering complaints from at least one player, with a Reddit user identified as IDramos still flagging unusually heavy GPU demand on an RTX 3060 despite the CPU-side improvements.
Online play in particular still needs attention. WCCFTech, which tested the patch on high-end hardware (an i7-13700F paired with an RTX 4080), reported that offline performance held steady but that in online play, I often experienced matches against other PC players that were completely unplayable due to significant slowdowns and 5 or more rollback frames, suggesting netcode and connection stability remain separate from the CPU-load fixes addressed in this patch.
A Rocky Start for Arc System Works’ 4v4 Marvel Fighter
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launched on August 6 on PC and PS5, developed by Arc System Works and built around 4v4 tag-team battles across the Marvel roster. GosuGamers and EventHubs both noted that a day-one patch had already tried to fix similar complaints carried over from the game’s Open Beta, but PC issues persisted badly enough after launch that Arc System Works pushed out this second, more targeted maintenance update within days.
For a fighting game built around frame-perfect inputs, stabilising CPU performance is not a cosmetic fix: it directly affects competitive viability, from local ranked play to online matchmaking. With the developer signalling that further optimisation work is planned, the next patch cycle will likely be watched just as closely by the FGC as this one was.
