Heroes of the Storm Gets Its First New Hero in Six Years: Xal’atath

One of the quieter shocks of BlizzCon 2026 was Heroes of the Storm getting a new hero at all. Xal’atath, the antagonist from World of Warcraft, is coming to the Nexus on 28 September as a playable character, the first new Heroes of the Storm hero in around six years.
Six years between heroes
Heroes of the Storm has been in maintenance mode for a long time, with Blizzard winding down active development years ago. A brand-new hero, especially a marquee WoW villain like Xal’atath, is the strongest signal in ages that the game is getting attention again rather than just staying online.
Why it matters for the Nexus
Whether this is a one-off crowd-pleaser or the start of renewed support is the open question, and the community is reading it both ways. For a game its fans assumed was done getting new content, a fresh hero landing on 28 September is a genuine surprise. We’ll see if more follows.
