GOALS 2.0.0 Lands With 5v5 Ranked and a Major Gameplay Overhaul

GOALS just got its biggest update since launch, and it’s a proper overhaul. GOALS 2.0.0 is live from 10 September on PS5, Xbox Series S and X, and PC, with full cross-platform play.

The headline is competition. There’s a new 5v5 Ranked mode for squading up with friends, plus The Trial, a tournament-style run where you take on the game alongside AI teammates. Two very different ways to play, both built around the skill-based football GOALS is going for.

Under the hood, the football itself got smarter. The studio reworked AI across positioning, attacking runs, defensive organisation, set pieces and 5v5 team play, so matches should read less like chaos and more like actual tactics.

New players get an easier way in too. A redesigned onboarding system adds chained tutorials, dynamic instructions and clearer feedback, which a free-to-play game living or dying on retention badly needs.

There’s more to grind for, with new challenges, rewards and an expanded Swaps system that gives you fresh ways to use the collection you’ve already built. Online got a pass as well: better matchmaking, connectivity, party features, and the ability to rejoin a match after a disconnect.

GOALS launched free-to-play back in June, so a rebuild this size a few months later is a studio going all-in. It’s live now, and it’s free, so there’s no reason not to boot it up.

More sports gaming: NBA 2K27 is out now with its first player ratings.
