Escape From Ever After Gets 4,000-Copy Physical Switch Run From Super Rare Games

Super Rare Games is putting out a physical Nintendo Switch run of Escape From Ever After, the Paper Mario-style RPG about a fairytale hero fighting his way up a corporate ladder. The boutique publisher confirmed the print run at 4,000 standard copies, with no limited edition planned, in a partnership with developer Sleepy Castle Studio, Wing-It! Creative and original publisher HypeTrain Digital.

The game will have 4,000 standard copies, and there will not be a limited edition. That puts it in line with plenty of Super Rare’s past boxed indies rather than treating it as a premium collector’s item.

Fans of the game have been asking for a boxed copy since launch, so the reaction has mostly been relief mixed with worry about missing the print run:

What’s in the box for 4,000 buyers

Each unit includes the game, a full-color manual, exclusive sticker, and trading cards. No collector’s edition means no steelbook, no soundtrack disc, no numbered art book. Just the cart and a handful of extras, which keeps the price down and the run achievable for a two-person studio.

That’s the whole physical package. If you want a display box and a manual you can actually hold, this is your one shot, since Super Rare doesn’t reprint once a run sells out.

Pre-orders open September 10, no local time confirmed yet

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch physical release begin on September 10 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM in the UK / 7 PM in Europe. Super Rare hasn’t listed an Australian or New Zealand time for the window, so ANZ buyers will need to convert from UK time themselves or watch the storefront directly.

Our view: a 4,000-unit run for a game with this much word-of-mouth behind it will move fast. If you’ve been waiting, set an alarm rather than a reminder for “later that day.”

From a $40,000 Kickstarter to a Paper Mario comparison

Escape from Ever After was developed by Sleepy Castle Studio, a two-person indie team made up of Ryan Kitner and Daniel Whitworth, and its Kickstarter campaign closed in December 2022 having raised CA$95,565 against a $40,000 goal. That’s a modest budget for a game that’s since drawn direct comparisons to one of Nintendo’s own franchises.

The finished RPG released on January 23, 2026, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X and S, published by HypeTrain Digital. Nintendo Life’s coverage went as far as calling it “the heir apparent to the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door throne.”

The digital version has sat at $24.99 USD since launch, and it released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch for €24.99 across European storefronts. Player reception backs up the RPG comparisons: Steam reviews sit at “Overwhelmingly Positive,” with 96% of 1,523 user reviews rated positive.

Why a two-person studio gets the boxed treatment

Super Rare Games has built its whole business on exactly this gap: small teams that ship well-reviewed indies but have no retail muscle of their own. A 4,000-copy cap isn’t a vanity number, it’s the publisher’s usual way of testing demand without sitting on unsold stock.

We’d rather see a studio this size get a fixed, no-frills run than a bloated collector’s box nobody can afford. It also means Sleepy Castle Studio, still just Kitner and Whitworth as far as public credits show, gets a straightforward manufacturing deal instead of a complicated tiered Kickstarter-style pledge system.

Pre-orders go live September 10. After that, it’s first come, first served until all 4,000 copies are gone.
