Donnie Yen Revealed as Mó Yuan in Phantom Blade Zero, Consultant Since 2023

S-GAME has confirmed that Hong Kong action legend Donnie Yen plays Mó Yuan, the father of protagonist Soul, in Phantom Blade Zero, and that he has quietly worked on the wuxia action game as a creative consultant since 2023. The reveal came in an extended 11-minute trailer that went live alongside pre-orders on August 11, with the studio confirming the details in a post on the official PlayStation Blog.

Donnie Yen has served as creative consultant for Phantom Blade Zero since 2023, bringing his martial arts and action filmmaking expertise to the combat design to help deliver an authentic kung fu experience, S-GAME founder and CEO Soulframe Liang wrote in the post. Liang noted that the day’s extended trailer wasn’t enough to cover the game’s intricate gameplay systems, dynamic combat, and the dark wuxia land the studio calls the Phantom World.

Mó Yuan: The Masked Man From June’s Teaser

Eagle-eyed fans had a hint of this reveal back at June’s PlayStation State of Play, when a short teaser introduced a mysterious masked man fighting with a sword in one hand and a baby in the other. The new trailer finally unmasked him: Phantom Blade Zero revealed who was behind the mask: Donnie “Ip Man” Yen.

He takes on the role of Facial & Motion Capture Actor for Mó Yuan, protagonist Soul’s father, according to PlayStation Blog. The character had already been teased as a central figure in Soul’s journey through the game’s fictional Phantom World, a setting steeped in Chinese wuxia storytelling.

The trailer’s credits made the studio’s gratitude explicit, with PC Gamer reporting that “Huge thanks to Donnie and his stunt team for bringing authentic kung fu to the game,” the trailer’s description reads.

Kenji Tanigaki’s 30-Year Bond With Yen Explains the Secret

The collaboration wasn’t entirely without clues. PC Gamer pointed out that back in 2023, S-Game founder Soulframe Liang wrote a post on the PlayStation Blog naming Kenji Tanigaki as the game’s “action director,” and Tanigaki has been a member of Yen’s stunt team for some 30 years, collaborating with him on at least a dozen projects.

Tanigaki’s history with Yen dates back further still. According to a profile of the choreographer, Tanigaki migrated to Hong Kong in 1993 and began his career in action choreography by collaborating with Donnie Yen in the ATV martial arts drama series Fist of Fury in 1995, after Yen sought to recruit every available stunt actor in Hong Kong and brought Tanigaki on board. Tanigaki has since worked as Yen’s action director on projects including his fight scenes in John Wick: Chapter 4, making him a natural conduit for bringing Yen’s expertise into a video game production.

Yen’s casting carries weight beyond star power. PC Gamer noted that the actor has some all-timer Chinese action classics to his name, including Hero, Iron Monkey, and Once Upon a Time in China 2, and since 2008 has starred in multiple films as the man who taught Bruce Lee kung fu, grandmaster Ip Man. Internationally, he’s best known for playing the blind Jedi-adjacent warrior Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One and Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4.

PC Gamer summarised the scale of that experience simply: Yen brings more than 40 years of martial arts experience to the game. For a title built around close-quarters wuxia swordplay, that pedigree is meant to reassure players that the combat animations and choreography carry genuine martial-arts DNA rather than generic motion-capture stunts.

State of Play Deep Dive Lands August 17, NZ and AU Times Confirmed

The Yen reveal comes packaged with fresh scheduling details. PlayStation Blog confirmed a dedicated broadcast streaming August 17 at 7:00pm PT / 10:00pm ET | August 18 at 3:00am BST / 10:00am Beijing Time / 11:00am JST, which will run for close to 20 minutes of new gameplay footage. Converted to the Southern Hemisphere, that slot lands at roughly 2:00pm NZST and 12:00pm AEST on August 18, a comfortable afternoon viewing window for New Zealand and Australian fans.

Pre-orders are already live across PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store, with the standard edition priced at $59.99 for the standard edition, and the deluxe edition priced at $69.99. NoisyPixel reported that ordering early grants the Treasure Basin accessory and Legacy outfit, both of which can also be unlocked through in-game progression rather than being locked away permanently.

Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to launch worldwide on October 29, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and PC for now, with no Xbox Series X/S or Nintendo Switch 2 version currently announced. With development already wrapped and Yen’s involvement now public, S-GAME has just under three months to keep building momentum toward what has become one of the year’s most closely watched action releases outside the AAA blockbuster crowd.
