DESOLUS Sets an October 15 Launch, an Outer Wilds Alum’s 13-Year Passion Project

DESOLUS finally has a date. The first-person puzzle game about pulling a Gothic city apart across two timelines arrives on 15 October, hitting Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Xbox and Steam all at once.

It’s the solo work of Mark J. Mayers, whose CV includes the BAFTA-winning Outer Wilds and the mind-bending Manifold Garden, and it’s been in the oven for roughly thirteen years.

Puzzle-game watchers have had this one on their radar for a while, and the date drop got a reaction:

Excited to announce Desolus will release on October 15th!

Explore a city of Gothic architecture torn between past and future in Desolus, a first person puzzle game. Solve Escher-like puzzles through the use of black holes. Travel through time to make structures whole and save the city from ruin.

Two timelines, one collapsing city

The hook is time. The city of Desolus splits into two versions of itself, one in a vibrant past and one in a catastrophic future, and you shift staircases, archways, debris and other pieces of architecture from one timeline into the other to build a path toward its centre. Manipulating black holes to warp Escher-like structures is how you untangle the place and find the source of the apocalypse bearing down on it.

Thirteen years, one developer

DESOLUS is Mayers’ first solo passion project, and the pedigree shows in the pitch: seven distinct areas across the city, from grand entrance halls to a mirrored garden, all built around spatial-reasoning puzzles rather than combat. A mysterious guardian guides you deeper while warning about their alter ego in the other reality. Published by The Quantum Astrophysicists Guild, it’s the kind of small, singular project that a big studio would never greenlight and a solo dev spends over a decade on.

Out 15 October across everything

There’s no combat, no fail states to grind, just architecture and time. Review keys are on the way ahead of the 15 October launch, so expect more eyes on it as the date closes in. If you liked Manifold Garden’s geometry or Outer Wilds’ sense of place, this is one to watch.
