Cards After Midnight Is a Werewolf Roguelike Deckbuilder Coming in 2027

Midnight hits, your skin splits, and the whole village comes after you with torches. That’s the pitch for Cards After Midnight, a dark roguelike card adventure announced today by Barcelona publisher JanduSoft and Córdoba-based developer Boomfire Games.

The game is coming to all platforms next year, and its Steam page lists a 2027 release. If you want a taste sooner, a demo is already live on Steam as of today.

A Werewolf Curse Set in the 19th Century

You play as the seventh son of a seventh son, born into a humble farming family in the 19th century. When you come of age, you learn the truth about your bloodline. Every night at midnight, you turn into a werewolf.

The villagers find out, and they want you dead. From there the game becomes a desperate run through isolated villages, dark forests, abandoned churches and dangerous roads while you look for answers about where you came from and why you were cursed. The Steam page also mentions clues to uncover and hard choices that shape the journey, so there’s more going on than just running away.

Human by Day, Beast at Midnight

The core idea is that the clock changes how you play. You switch between two forms, and each one has its own abilities and strategies.

At midnight you become the beast. You’re savage, you hit hard, and you lean on animal instinct to tear through whatever gets in your way. When daylight comes, you’re human again and you have to rely on weapons, tools and smarter tactics to survive the hunters, villagers and other threats on the road.

I like this a lot. Most deckbuilders ask you to master one deck. Here, the same run seems to force you into two very different playstyles, and knowing that your strongest form disappears at sunrise should make every card decision feel tense. The screenshots show separate human and wolf portraits on the board, each with their own stats, which suggests the switch changes a lot more than the art. The trick will be planning around the hours you’re weak, not just the hours you’re strong. That’s where a roguelike like this will live or die.

Deckbuilding, Perks and Level Ups

Under the werewolf story is a strategic card game. You build and adapt a deck of survival cards, manage your resources, and plan your escape one encounter at a time. JanduSoft promises powerful enemies that will force you to play your cards wisely.

Levelling up unlocks new upgrades and perks to make each escape a little easier. The Steam screenshots show a perk selection screen with options that boost maximum health, let you regain health when a perk triggers in either form, or raise maximum sanity. As a roguelite, every run is meant to play out differently.

From the Studio Behind Cards of the Dead

Boomfire Games has form here. The studio made Furwind, The Creepy Syndrome and Cards of the Dead, a zombie card game that already mixed survival with deckbuilding. Cards After Midnight looks like a natural next step, swapping the undead for a folk horror werewolf tale with a day and night twist.

JanduSoft is publishing, and the two studios are bringing the game to all platforms. The Steam page is live now, with support planned for English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Catalan.

We don’t have a firm date or a price yet, only that it’s due next year. Until then, the demo is the best way to find out whether the curse is worth catching.
