Battlefield 6 Brings Back Wake Island in Update 1.4.2.0, Adds Top Gun Crossover

Wake Island, one of the most storied maps in the Battlefield series, is officially back. Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios shipped Update 1.4.2.0 for Battlefield 6 on August 18, 2026, restoring the horseshoe-shaped Pacific atoll as the franchise’s 17th playable map and pairing it with a free Top Gun-themed crossover event.

The update landed simultaneously across PS5, Xbox and PC, and also touches Battlefield’s free-to-play spin-off REDSEC. According to Battlefield Studios’ own developer map guide, published on EA’s official site, Wake Island becomes Battlefield 6’s 17th map in Season 4, pushing the return of Naval Warfare to its full potential, opening up the skies for aerial combat, and challenging infantry to island hop around the atoll.

A Two-Decade Legacy Rebuilt on the Battlefield V Layout

Wake Island’s roots stretch back to Battlefield 1942, and the map has since resurfaced in numerous entries. Per Battlefield Studios’ developer guide, Battlefield 2 returned the map with enhanced fidelity and refined vehicle combat, Battlefield 1943 transformed it into a hotbed for high-octane combat emphasising airstrip control, and it later surfaced in Battlefield 3’s “Back to Karkand” expansion with new destruction physics. Its most recent outing, in Battlefield V, pushed the boundaries of visual fidelity and environmental storytelling, and was the basis for what Battlefield Studios developers used for its return in Battlefield 6, EA confirmed. GameSpot corroborated the map’s pedigree, noting Wake Island, which first appeared in Battlefield 1942, is inspired by the real-life Wake Atoll in the Pacific ocean where a World War II battle took place, and it’s among the most beloved Battlefield maps ever.

Battlefield Studios Executive Producer Ryan McArthur explained the timing of the return, telling EA’s own newsroom: “Wake Island is one of Battlefield’s most celebrated maps and the debut of Naval Warfare alongside our upgraded tech related to that meant it was the perfect opportunity to return to a fan-favorite and make it an even more immersive experience for Battlefield 6.”

Level Designer Victor Guillermo on Rebuilding “Peak Wake Island”

Recreating a map with so much community baggage wasn’t straightforward. Battlefield Studios Level Designer Victor Guillermo acknowledged community debates on what was “peak Wake Island,” especially when it came to all-out warfare game modes like Breakthrough, according to EA’s developer map guide.

Guillermo detailed the studio’s early missteps in a direct quote published by EA: “At first, we tried working with a similar layout to Battlefield V. It looked great on paper, but the travel times were too great for players, and the second sector with three objectives was too challenging for the attackers to capture during playtests. So, we decided two objectives would be our max per sector, but still had trouble with spacing.”

Cover density proved just as tricky to balance. Guillermo also revealed that the team originally placed an immense amount of bushes and rocks throughout the island to counter the lack of cover and sightlines of previous iterations, then found players couldn’t find their available routes once there was too much cover: eventually settling on sculpted, undulating terrain and thematic set dressing instead.

Top Gun Crossover Adds Two Jets and Carrier Strike Mode

Wake Island’s return is bundled into a wider Top Gun crossover event, which PlayStation Universe confirmed launched with the same 1.4.2.0 patch. The update introduces two new two-seat fighter jets, with PSU reporting players can “take flight in the F/A-81F Super Spectre and F-74A Seacat, two new two-seat fighter jets built for pilots and their wingmen.”

Two new modes accompany the jets. PSU detailed that players can battle across the skies in Top Gun: Carrier Strike and Gauntlet: Fighter Sweep, and complete new Event Challenges to earn Ace Medals, a limited-time currency that can be spent on Top Gun-themed cosmetics. A new squad unit, CJTF Helix, was also added, drawing inspiration from the film franchise’s cast of characters.

Industry outlet ComicBook.com framed the patch as a turning point for the shooter’s post-launch momentum, noting that while BF6 struggled to find stability in the early months of the year, Battlefield Studios has since started to improve the multiplayer component of the game greatly throughout Season 3 and Season 4, releasing another substantial patch that should bring back longtime Battlefield fans in droves.

Free Trial Lets Newcomers Try Wake Island Without Buying In

EA is also using the update to court new players. The publisher’s own Season 4 event guide confirms that the free-to-play, free-for-everyone Battlefield REDSEC will have a Battlefield 6 Free Trial featuring four maps and four playlists to mark the Top Gun launch, letting curious players sample Wake Island alongside Tsuru Reef, Cairo Bazaar and Hagental Base before deciding whether to pick up the full game.

For Australian and New Zealand squads, the update rolled out at the same worldwide time as other regions, meaning local servers should already be filling up with returning veterans keen to relearn the atoll’s chokepoints, and plenty of newcomers testing the water via the free REDSEC trial before committing to a purchase.
