Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2’s Specialist Trailer Shows Off a Build-Your-Own Marine

Cold Iron Studios and publisher Daybreak Game Company have released a new trailer for Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 dedicated entirely to the Specialist, a sixth, fully build-crafted class that lets players stitch together abilities and perks unlocked across the game’s other five Colonial Marine archetypes. The video, published this week, is the last in a run of class showcases ahead of the shooter’s August 25 launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version confirmed for later this year.

The footage confirms what developers have been teasing since the class was first detailed earlier this year: rather than shipping with its own fixed weapons or abilities, the Specialist lets players pick and choose items from the other classes to build a specialised whole out of unlocked abilities and perks from the other base classes. Outlet MassivelyOP, which reviewed the trailer, noted the video demonstrates things like a Machinist shotgun drone, a Hunter particle beam, and a Duelist perk all being used by the same character.

An Endgame Class That Needs the Other Five First

There’s a catch to all that flexibility: none of it is available on day one. As MassivelyOP points out, you’ll have to unlock the abilities first, meaning that this is an endgame feature as the game’s site notes. Tech Times’ breakdown of the class corroborates the same structure, describing the Specialist as a build lifted from the entire ability pool of the Duelist, Machinist, Marauder, Hunter, and Medic, letting players construct a marine from scratch rather than accepting a fixed archetype.

According to AvP Central’s roundup of the sequel’s six classes, the design philosophy is straightforward: Marauder brings the heavy boom, Specialist stitches the best unlocked pieces into one marine, Duelist handles flexible primary DPS, Machinist owns tech and plasma control, Hunter slows prey for weak-point kills, and Medic keeps the squad standing. That framing lines up with a specific loadout shown in the developer showcase and confirmed by Tech Times, which combined the Machinist’s Shredder Bodyguard drone, the Hunter’s Particle Beam, the L56A3 Smartgun as a signature weapon, and cross-class perks including Focus Fire and Doctor’s Orders.

Why Cold Iron Built a Sixth Class Around a Fourth Marine

The Specialist exists because Fireteam Elite 2 is growing its squads. The 2021 original capped fireteams at three, but the sequel bumps that to four, and Cold Iron’s Studio Creative/Design Director Chris Cross has said the extra slot was the entire reason the class needed to exist. Speaking to TechRadar Gaming at Summer Game Fest 2026, Cross explained that beyond the four-player shift, “there are so many different ways to put together” the highly customizable Specialist class, which also has its own progression system, adding as an example, “Basically, you can end up with like really awesome multiclass,” he said, adding as an example, “It’s like a Marauder and a Gunslinger.”

Tech Times frames the same design choice around squad composition math: with four marines instead of three, squads face the problem of duplicated roles, and the Specialist solves this by letting whoever fills the fourth slot adapt to what the squad is actually missing: controller, healer, heavy, rather than doubling an archetype someone else has already chosen. Cross has separately told TechRadar that scaling combat to four players created real engineering hurdles, since juggling that many marines multiplies the number of enemies, effects and targeting priorities the game needs to track at once.

A Bigger Perk Grid Feeds the Build-Crafting

Feeding the Specialist’s flexibility is a reworked progression system. AvP Central reports that the wider loadout systems are changing: classes use primary weapons and signature weapons instead of the old secondary-weapon pattern, sidearms are now customizable, and the perk grid expands from 32 to 42 slots, which is a big reason Specialist can become so personal once the other classes are leveled. In practice, that means the more time players spend levelling the Duelist, Machinist, Marauder, Hunter and Medic, the more toolkit options open up once they finally unlock the sixth slot.

Release Details: August 25 Launch, Switch 2 Arriving This Fall

The Specialist trailer arrives as Cold Iron and Daybreak lock in final launch details. Daybreak’s own announcement, distributed via GoNintendo, confirms a new co-op trailer for Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 will be available worldwide for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Epic Games Store, and Steam on August 25, with the game also coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this fall. The Digital Standard Edition is priced at $49.99, while the Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 – 40th Anniversary Premium Edition, bundling cosmetic DLC drawn from the wider Alien franchise, runs $69.99, with a $19.99 upgrade path for standard-edition buyers who want the extra content later.

No NZD or AUD storefront pricing has been confirmed yet, though Steam and console listings typically go live for Australian and New Zealand players at the same worldwide release moment, so local squads should be able to drop into LV-558 alongside everyone else on August 25. Fans hanging out for a handheld session will need to wait a little longer, with Cold Iron and Daybreak yet to lock in an exact autumn date for the Switch 2 port.
