How to Play GTA 6 Early by Up to 19 Hours by Changing Your Region to New Zealand

Grand Theft Auto 6 can potentially be played up to 19 hours early by accessing New Zealand’s release window instead of waiting for a later regional unlock. The New Zealand PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 for 11:00 AM UTC on 18 November, which is 12:00 AM NZDT on 19 November, while the Mexico store unlocks at 06:00 AM UTC on 19 November.
That creates a maximum 19-hour gap across the currently listed PlayStation rollout. The method is much easier on Xbox Series X|S, where Microsoft lets users change the console location to New Zealand. PS5 does not allow an existing account’s country or region to be changed, so the PlayStation method requires a separate New Zealand account.
The 19-hour figure is confirmed by the current PlayStation Store timestamps. Rockstar has not published the same region-by-region timetable for Xbox, so changing an Xbox location is straightforward, but GTA 6’s exact Xbox unlock behaviour cannot be guaranteed until Microsoft’s regional release times are final.
How to Play GTA 6 Early on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox Series X|S has the simplest version of the New Zealand trick because the console itself includes a location setting. Microsoft’s instructions place it under System > Language & location.
- Sign in to your Xbox Series X|S.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Language & location.
- Open the Location menu.
- Select New Zealand.
- Select Restart now so the location change takes effect.
- Once New Zealand reaches 12:00 AM NZDT on 19 November, try launching your preloaded copy of GTA 6.
You do not need to change the Xbox system language just to select another location. Microsoft specifically separates Language, Language region and Location inside the same menu, with the console restart applying the new location setting.
After GTA 6 has officially released in your actual region, you can return to the same menu, change Location back to your normal country or region, and restart the console again.

Where to Select New Zealand on Xbox
Inside the Xbox Language & location menu, scroll through the Location list until New Zealand appears. Select it, then use Restart now on the same settings screen.
This is a console location change rather than a migration of the entire Microsoft account. Microsoft separately documents account-region changes, but that extra step is not part of the Xbox console instructions above.
How Much Earlier Can You Play GTA 6?
The size of the advantage depends on the region you would normally use. New Zealand opens first at 11:00 AM UTC on 18 November, while the final currently confirmed PlayStation Store window opens 19 hours later for Mexico and several Central American markets.
| Region | GTA 6 Unlock in UTC | Gap After New Zealand |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | 18 November, 11:00 AM | First window |
| Australia | 18 November, 1:00 PM | 2 hours |
| Japan and South Korea | 18 November, 3:00 PM | 4 hours |
| Indonesia and Thailand | 18 November, 5:00 PM | 6 hours |
| UK and Ireland | 19 November, 12:00 AM | 13 hours |
| United States and Canada | 19 November, 5:00 AM | 18 hours |
| Mexico and parts of Central America | 19 November, 6:00 AM | 19 hours |
For US players, the maximum difference is therefore 18 hours rather than 19. The current US PlayStation Store uses one nationwide 05:00 AM UTC unlock, corresponding to midnight Eastern, 11:00 PM Central, 10:00 PM Mountain and 9:00 PM Pacific.

How to Play GTA 6 Early on PS5
PS5 does not have an Xbox-style switch for changing the region of an existing PlayStation Network account. Sony states that an account’s country or region is chosen during account creation and cannot be changed afterwards.
That means accessing the New Zealand PlayStation Store requires a separate account registered to that region rather than changing the country of your existing PSN account.
- From the PS5 home screen, select your profile picture.
- Select Switch User > Add User > Get Started.
- Choose Create an Account from the sign-in screen.
- Enter the required account information.
- At the Country or Region screen, the account would need to be registered for New Zealand to access that PlayStation Store region.
- Complete the account setup and verify the email address.
- Purchase GTA 6 through that New Zealand account using a compatible regional payment method.
- Download or preload GTA 6 through the New Zealand account.
- Launch it once the New Zealand Store reaches its 12:00 AM NZDT unlock.
Sony tells users to register accounts to the correct country or region and to keep their billing information consistent with that region. PlayStation vouchers are also region-specific, so a voucher used on a New Zealand PSN account needs to match the New Zealand Store.

Can You Play the New Zealand PS5 Copy on Your Main Account?
PS5’s Console Sharing and Offline Play feature allows other users on the same console to play downloaded games purchased by the account that has sharing enabled. The setting is found under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
If the New Zealand account owns and downloads GTA 6, enabling that feature may allow another user on the same PS5 to launch the installed game once its licence has unlocked. Account-specific extras are a separate matter. The New Zealand PlayStation Store states that the one-month GTA+ pre-order benefit is non-transferable and can only be redeemed by the account that pre-ordered GTA 6.
Where to Select New Zealand When Making a PS5 Account
The relevant PS5 screen appears during new-account creation under Your Information. Country or Region and Preferred Language are chosen there before the account is completed.
This choice is permanent for that PSN account. Simply changing the PS5 console language, timezone or another system setting will not convert an existing account into a New Zealand account.
Does the New Zealand Trick Require Buying GTA 6 Again?
On Xbox, the console method changes the location setting, so a separate New Zealand Xbox account is not part of Microsoft’s location-change process.
PS5 is different. Because an existing PSN account cannot be moved to another country or region, the New Zealand method depends on a separate account having access to the New Zealand Store. Someone who already bought GTA 6 through a different PSN region should not assume that purchase can simply be moved to the New Zealand account.

Can a Physical Copy Get GTA 6 Even Earlier?
No playable disc is currently planned for launch. GTA 6 is being sold digitally, while boxed retail versions contain a download code rather than a physical game disc. That removes the usual possibility of a retailer shipping a playable disc ahead of the official unlock.
Preloading is due to begin on 12 November, one week before launch. Having the files installed early does not bypass the release lock, so the New Zealand window still determines the earliest listed PlayStation access.
Will the GTA 6 New Zealand Trick Definitely Work?
On PS5, the underlying release-time difference is already visible on Sony’s regional stores. The New Zealand PlayStation Store lists the game at 11:00 AM UTC on 18 November, while the Mexico PlayStation Store lists 06:00 AM UTC on 19 November, producing the full 19-hour difference.
Xbox users have a verified way to change their console location to New Zealand, but Rockstar and Microsoft have not published an equivalent GTA 6 timetable showing every Xbox unlock down to the hour. The location method is therefore ready to use, while its precise GTA 6 advantage should be treated as provisional until the Xbox unlock is visible closer to release.
The first confirmed GTA 6 window currently opens in New Zealand at 12:00 AM NZDT on 19 November 2026, with preloading scheduled to begin on 12 November.
