Riftbound: Vendetta Reveals Zed, From the Shadows Card Ahead of Launch
Riot Games’ physical trading card game has pulled its next League of Legends champion into the spotlight. GamesRadar+ published an exclusive reveal of Zed, From the Shadows, a new champion card coming in Riftbound: Vendetta, the fourth main set for the Riftbound TCG, which launches worldwide on July 31.
The reveal lands in the middle of Vendetta’s preview season, which runs through July 18 ahead of the set’s global release, according to GamesRadar+ and companion coverage from GAMES.GG. Zed joins a growing list of champions confirmed for the set, translating the mid-lane assassin’s clone-and-burst identity from Summoner’s Rift into cardboard form.
Zed’s Overnumbered Stats and the Shadow Clone Combo
GamesRadar+’s reveal names Zed, From the Shadows as an Overnumbered Champion Unit with 4 Might and a cost of 4 Energy, on top of a requirement to recycle a Fury rune. GAMES.GG’s independent coverage of the same reveal confirms those baseline numbers, describing the stat line as solid but unflashy for a champion slot.
The card’s real hook sits in its optional cost. Playing Zed lets you discard a card as an additional, optional cost, and if you do, you can also play a 0 Might Shadow Clone unit token. On its own, that clone token looks unthreatening, but Shadow Clone’s ability to banish a unit from your trash when attacking in order to give it Assault 4 on a turn (+4 Might when attacking) can be fairly menacing.
GAMES.GG’s breakdown frames the interaction as a two-body threat from a single card, with the combination creating a two-unit pressure play from a single card, where Zed threatens from one angle, the Shadow Clone threatens from another, and the banish cost feeds off whatever you discarded to play Zed in the first place. Because the Shadow Clone counts as its own independent unit rather than a token attached to Zed, both outlets note it can also be targeted separately by positioning effects or unit-specific spells.
Vendetta’s Rivalry Theme Puts Zed Against Shen
Zed’s card doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Riot Games and manufacturing partner UVS Games have built Vendetta entirely around rival champion pairings, and the focus of this particular set is about rivalries, pairing enemy-color Legends like Shen and Zed, Mel and Ambessa, and others together for major confrontations on the battlefield, according to Bleeding Cool’s coverage of the set’s official reveal.
That rivalry theme extends to the set’s flagship new product. Vendetta introduces Showdown Decks, giving two players ready-to-play decks in a single box, with the first pairing being that of Shen versus Zed. Riftbound.gg’s tracking hub adds that the Zed-versus-Shen box pairs two 56-card decks with two booster packs, positioned as an entry point for new players getting into the game through the rivalry storyline.
Vendetta is also the first Riftbound set to trim its champion count, moving to nine Legends instead of the twelve seen in earlier sets, alongside new keyword mechanics. Flow lets players play cards from their trash instead of their hand, Burn sends cards from a main deck to the trash, and Empower gives cards the potential to gain new abilities once they’re in play, often after paying a cost. Zed’s own card doesn’t use any of those three keywords directly, but its discard-and-recur design plugs into the same trash-focused toolkit that runs through the rest of the set.
What Vendetta Means for Riftbound Collectors in NZ and Australia
Riftbound has already built a following among Australian and New Zealand trading card shops since its earlier sets landed locally alongside established lines like Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon. With Vendetta confirmed for a simultaneous worldwide release on July 31 rather than a staggered regional rollout, local stockists should, in theory, receive booster boxes and the new Shen-versus-Zed Showdown Decks on the same day as North American and Chinese markets.
Riot has framed that global release-day alignment as a deliberate shift for the franchise. Whether Australian and New Zealand distributors can match that simultaneous timing in practice will depend on shipping logistics that Riot itself has acknowledged are still being finalised, but the intent to end the China-first staggered launches that shaped Riftbound’s earlier sets is now official.
More Vendetta Card Reveals Expected Through July 18
Zed, From the Shadows is unlikely to be the last card partner outlets unveil before Vendetta ships. GamesRadar+ notes that further Riftbound: Vendetta cards are expected to be revealed through July 18, directing fans to the official Riftbound card gallery for the complete rollout. Pre-Rift events at local hobby shops are set to begin on July 24, a week before the full set becomes available.
With nine Legends, more than 160 cards, over 50 Showcase variants and a new Overnumbered artwork treatment pairing rival champions on facing cards, Vendetta is shaping up as one of Riftbound’s most ambitious releases yet. For Zed players specifically, the coming weeks should reveal whether his shadow-clone fantasy holds up once the card’s full rules text and surrounding support cards are locked in.
