Only Seven PlayStation Games Passed 100k Physical US Sales in 2026, Analyst Says

Just seven PlayStation games have sold more than 100,000 physical units in the United States so far this year, according to Circana senior director and industry advisor Mat Piscatella, and only two sold more than 10,000 physical units in the week ending 11 July 2026. The figures land three weeks into a backlash over Sony’s decision to stop releasing new games on disc from January 2028, and they go some way to explaining the decision.
Piscatella later clarified the numbers are not first-party only: they cover “total PlayStation. All games, all publishers, all PlayStation platforms”.
The Numbers Behind the Decision
Piscatella posted the data on Bluesky in response to a story about a Wolverine trailer being flooded with comments protesting the disc decision. His point was not that the protest is illegitimate but that the market it is defending has already thinned out. “Two PlayStation video games sold more than 10,000 physical units in the US during the week ending July 11, 2026,” he wrote. “Seven have sold more than 100,000 physical units year-to-date.” He added: “Commenting is cool, use your voice and all that. But commenting is cheap, I don’t know.”

But commenting is cheap, idk.

The UK picture is no healthier. Christopher Dring of The Game Business noted that 1,000 boxed copies would have been enough for ninth place in the UK physical charts last week, a position held by Pokemon Legends: Z-A, with the new Star Fox remake tenth. A newly released Switch 2 exclusive, in other words, shifted around 1,000 physical copies or fewer in a week.

Put together, the two data points reframe Sony’s move from a decision imposed on a healthy market to one made about a market that has already contracted sharply. That does not make it painless for people who value discs and manuals, but it is the commercial reality the company is working from, and it helps explain why Sony has shown no sign of backing down.

The Backlash Has Not Faded
Three weeks on from the announcement, Sony is still absorbing it across a range of channels. New videos on the official PlayStation YouTube channel, including trailers for indie games that were never getting physical releases in the first place, continue to draw large numbers of disc-related comments and more dislikes than likes regardless of what the video actually contains.
Piscatella’s Bigger Prediction
Asked about the fallout, Piscatella offered a view that reframes the whole argument: whatever the strength of feeling about discs, he thinks price will decide how the next console sells. “When the mass market sees the PS6 at potentially $1,000+, physical games being a thing or not won’t even make it to the decision making process,” he suggested. On that reading, the disc fight is being waged over a feature that will matter far less to most buyers than the number on the box.
