PlayStation Physical Discs After 2028 – Existing Games Can Still Be Reprinted

PlayStation has told its publishing partners that existing games will still be able to have physical discs printed after January 2028, when Sony stops producing discs for new PlayStation releases. The reassurance narrows the scope of an announcement that landed poorly with a large part of the public earlier this week, clarifying that the cutoff applies to new titles rather than games already on shelves.

As of 4 July 2026, the confirmation applies to any game released before the January 2028 deadline. Publishers will be able to place fresh disc orders for those existing titles, though Sony has signalled that one part of the process is changing.

What Sony Told Its Publishing Partners

According to Game File, Sony sent a message to game publishers stating they will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games. Any game released before the cutoff qualifies, meaning discs of titles that launch in 2027 can still be produced in 2028 and beyond.

Sony did flag one change: the ordering process for the discs will be different, with details to be announced later. The company has not yet explained how the new process will work or when publishers will receive the specifics.

The January 2028 Cutoff For New Games

The partner message follows Sony’s announcement on 1 July that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games as of January 2028, confirmed in a PlayStation Blog post. That announcement has landed poorly with a large portion of the public.

For games released after the deadline, Sony said publishers will have the option to sell new titles at retail using digital codes. How those codes reach buyers remains open: whether they arrive as a card, a code embedded in packaging, or another format has not been confirmed. Players will have to wait for a further announcement to know how post-2028 retail releases will be sold.

What This Means For Physical Game Owners

The distinction Sony has drawn is between new games and existing ones. Games already released, or released before January 2028, remain eligible for disc production; only games launching after the cutoff lose the physical option and shift to digital codes at retail. Buyers hunting for discs of current and upcoming titles therefore keep a window that extends past the 2028 date, limited by how long publishers choose to keep placing orders.

The unresolved questions sit with the post-2028 titles and the revised ordering process, both of which Sony has said it will detail in a later announcement.
